We had never been to Sofia before, so stayed 2 nights at the Hilton (which is way overpriced and charges for breakfast and for wi-fi) and searched for better lodgings. We found several other hotels that were just okay, but still overpriced, when we happened on the Baldjieva which just has a little sign reading "Guest House, 2 stars." I looked at the first room which was pretty grim, but then was shown the "suite" which was spacious, large bathroom, kingsize bed and a nifty little balcony overlooking the courtyard. No breakfast, but there were tables and umbrellas in the courtyard and a good little restaurant served dinners there. A little hole-in-the-wall bakery with great products is right next door---there is a trapdoor in the floor which leads down to the ovens! The hotel is just one block off the main pedestrian avenue with many shops and restaurants in the area, and just about 3 blocks from the very center of town. Free wi-fi and use of the lobby's computer. All of that for 35 euros a night. We spent 5 nights there for less that one night at the Hilton, and enjoyed it a lot more.
