I had been very excited to stay in Zwinkels Mountain Lodge since initially planning our Cameroon trip so was genuinely excited to arrive.

The rooms are nice, simple but clean and the grounds themselves are lovely. It’s quiet and although it adds on time and expense to get to and from the lodge each time you leave, we booked our stay to be away from the noise.

DO NOT get talked into going to the ‘Palace’ as it is either a scam, or Belo’s best joke aimed at the tourists. It wasted half a day, €40, and should never have been recommended as one of the top attractions. When I asked staff why they recommended it, one said they told the manager not to recommend it and the manager said she had never heard negative feedback but hadn’t been there before. Unfortunately it left a bad taste in our mouths given the ridiculousness of the visit. 

If your plan is to visit Mt. Oku and hike, my advice is to investigate prices yourself and not just accept Zwinkels. I recommend taking motorbikes to the tea plantation. It was a great day out. 

I had three showers, two of which were cold and they only switch electricity on from 18:00 - 20:30 so you’ll need to be organised with your charging.
 

Didn’t meet with my expectations

Spent 3 nights here over New Years with my wife and our 2 adult sons. It was brilliant. Haven't experienced that degree of relaxation in a long time. A dream-like setting in the mountains, surrounded by lush gardens. Fairly new, well maintained, decent architecture, properly furnished. Wonderful wrap-around terrace at the main house which is used for dining. We had the place to ourselves and spent most of our time reading and playing games (boule, scrabble). Once we adjusted to no internet, sporadic mobile phone connections and only 2 hours of electricity each day, it was deeply relaxing. Solar-powered USB outlets at the location allowed us to keep our e-readers charged. On New Years day our local guide, David, led us on a exhilarating hike to Lake Oku and back - 24k, the first 3 hours involving a 1,000 meter ascent. Great way to start the year! Regarding food: we took their meal plan, which was okay - keep in mind that it's a fairly remote location - no supermarket around the corner. Navigation tip: don't confuse Zwinkels Trekkers Camp with Zwinkels Mountain Lodge.

Quality chill spot

Wonderful stay at Zwinkels Trekkers Lodge up in the mountains. David took us on guided walks round the local area, a refreshing swim in a waterfall pool, a long and rewarding hike to Lake Oku (followed by another swim back at the waterfall), sunset drinks from the little pergola.  Great food from Unity (both in quality and quantity!).  Beautifully decorated buildings and stunning gardens.

Gorgeous few days in a serene setting - absolute paradise

The place is located in a perfect setting. Mountain view and quietness are fantastic. However it is not a TripAdvisor 5 Star for me. We stayed only one night in low season, being the first guests after 5 month. This must be considered. When we arrived, there was no electricity, generator not working. Even though we informed them one day in advance they did not charge its starter battery. Well, no big thing. As the manager asked me to remove the battery of my car to start the generator, we felt not taken care enough. The worst is the pricing. They wanted CFA 45000 for the better room, which is on the top end for any Hotel in the area. Discounted then to CFA 30000 for no electricity. For the one course dinner without any drinks, they charged 25.000 for two people. This is expensive for most European areas, in Cameroon just ridiculous. I have never payed 80% of a hotels room price for a simple dish. For us thus is on the edge of a rip off. Sorry for the nice place and friendly service.

Beautiful setting, some flaws, ridiculous prices

Stayed 2 nights...wished it was 20 nights...fantastic little lodge with great facilities and the most delicious food loving made and served by Unity. Had super little chalet en suite and just loved the peace and tranquillity  of the most majestic scenery in Cameroon. Thanks to David and Unity for being so super caring and making our stay so special
