We have loved Baie Saint-Paul since our first visit in 2008 and wanted to spend more time exploring the beautiful Charlevoix region. This charming inn was the perfect base for our three day stay. The building itself is an impressive blend of historic architecture and modern convenience, and the hosts are amazing. Marielou and Claude were more than friendly, and Marielou's pride in the beauty and variety of the Charlevoix is obvious. She very much wanted us to get the most out of our stay. The breakfasts were delicious, served on the balcony with an impressive view of the bay and the St. Laurence river. However, it was the hosts that really made the stay memorable. We would strongly recommend Le Noble Quêteux to anyone looking for a charming base for a visit to the Charlevoix.

A charming rural inn

We had booked the family room back in January (almost 7 months before travelling) as we wanted space but on our arrival were informed that the room had been double booked and there was already a family in it. Instead we were offered a standard double room but since we were friends travelling together as opposed to a couple the hostess then offered the use of her home office with a double bed as well, so we ended up having a room each. She clearly felt terrible about the mix up and offered us a glass of wine (which she shared with us along with some sparkling conversation) and then gave us a few small gifts (local aperitif, soap and a pen). 

The sleep quality was great as there were block out drapes in the room and the bed was comfortable. We were on the ground floor so were able to exit through sliding doors directly into the delightful garden.  The shower was fabulous with wonderful water pressure and heat. 

Breakfast was also a highlight. There were two courses which seems to be pretty standard in this region. To start we had a plate of fresh fruit, home made pate and there was a basket of various breads with home made jams (raspberry + rhubarb and banana + rhubarb - delicious). This was followed by french toast with fresh raspberries and a custard-like sauce. 

On our departure she offered us a reduced room rate for the inconvenience, which was wonderful. She clearly runs a good business and is keen to maintain a good reputation. Despite the booking error I felt she truly compensated us for this and would not hesitate to stay here again.

Handled the unexpected with panache

What a find! A short drive out of the town, the Noble Quêteux reminds one of nothing so much as a rambling, converted Tudor farmhouse from southern England or a luxury agriturismo in Tuscany (updated to the modern amenities one expects in order to deal with Canadian weather).

The rooms are very much boho-chic, with exposed brickwork, lovely antique furniture and a cozy yet sumptuous feel that invites you to cast away your worldly cares as you step through the doorway. 

Beyond that, beds are comfortable, bathrooms very clean and well-stocked. A word of warning for those over 6' - some of the showers are a little short on the top floor due to their location tucked into the eaves of the steep roof. But otherwise, the overall quality of the bedrooms and bathrooms was excellent - a cut above most B & Bs and a far cry from the corporate sameness of any hotel chain. 

Breakfast, when we visited, we served on the balcony/terrace to take advantage of the sunshine. The terrace shares the same view as many of the rooms, overlooking Baie-St-Paul and its plateau. Food was excellent (and abundant). 

In short, we will be staying again.

The place to sleep in Baie St Paul

Amazing!

This little B&B is just outside the Baie-St-Paul town centre. You'll need a car to get there from town, else you'd be in for quite a walk. But I imagine that most people visiting Baie-St-Paul would be doing so by car anyway, so this is not an issue. The B&B is about 10 minutes away from Le Massif (ski hill). (Heads up: Parking is near the sign post for the B&B and not right next to the house. This was not so visible at night when we arrived.)

At the time we visited, I believe the owners were away and had left someone else in charge. It was not entirely clear. That being said, the person in charge was very nice, though she kept to herself most of the time. The house has several floors. We stayed on the bottom floor. The room was sizable, well decorated, and the bathroom was perfectly fine. The walls are not terribly thick, but at the same time, we had absolutely no issues with noise. We slept very well.

There is a quaint sitting room and fireplace on the main floor. The room is furnished in wood (oak, I imagine) and there are comfy chairs in which to lounge. As I recall, the are a few board games that are made available to guests. The only downside here is that the owners' bedroom is situated on the main floor, right next to the sitting area. The temporary manager turned in relatively early, and with light walls, we were concerned about making any noise whatsoever, which made it hard to fully enjoy the communal space. That being said, there is another little sofa and coffee table on the bottom floor.

A light breakfast is served early every morning on the main floor. Very Quebec-oriented breakfast... even with cretons! Breakfast varies, but ours included a small omelet, yogurt, fruit, toast, and jams. Just enough to get one going in the morning. If you are a big person with a big stomach, don't expect to be full.

You can ask the B&B for resto recommendations. They gave us a little card that gave us discounts (~15%) at some of the local restaurants. This was very useful as there are not that many restaurants around anyway. The B&B operator's recommendations were good and she was able to call ahead on our behalf to find out opening hours and make reservations.

FYI, as you might expect, this is a very French-speaking part of the world. The woman that was temporarily managing the B&B while the operators were away seemed to only speak French. I imagine that the regular operators would have more familiarity with English, but this is just supposition. Still, in a beautiful locale like Baie-St-Paul, immersion in the French language is integral to the experience.
