Well this motel got me the worst booking for the road trip from my wife. When we pulled up it looked uninviting. From there things went downhill. The motorcycle and gas can in the reception (is that even safe) set the ambiance. The owner is Chinese and tries so very hard. Nothing is too much trouble for him. He is reception, cleaner, cook and waiter. Wife didn't like first room and we were moved to another not quite so bad. This place caters mainly for oil workers so is bog basic. Bed and bath was clean if really old and decrepit. WiFi was patchy, fading in and out. Breakfast was deep fried with coffee to wash it down. I'm not posh so it was not out of my comfort zone but otherwise consider carefully if this is for you. The price is dirt cheap so if that is your criteria it may be right for you.

Not for the faint hearted.

I was very impressed with my stay at the royal city motor inn it was incredibly cheap and surprisingly clean. The interior is as outdated as the exteriors and my room despretly needed new bedding. The room did have a big screen tv and I loved that pets are allowed the stay at no extra charge. Like the other reviews stated the food from the restaurant is amazing, do not judge the restaurant based on the looks I got one of the best cheese burgers of my life there. Basically this isn't the nicest hotel you can stay at but its definitely worth the price.

Cheap price, clean, and great food

Excellent service at early hour in the morning. Owner was very cheerful gladly fed me n my family Breakfast before hitting the road again. Would stay there again very quiet area. Park across the road for kids to run around.

Great service

If you like home cooked food at a reasonable price, here's the place to get it! You need to look past the dated decor, the lack of presentation and the roll of paper towels for napkins. This man is trying his best to improve this hotel and restaurant and it shows in his cooking! The portion size is amazing and the food is tasty! Try it out, get out of your comfort zone, it's worth it!

Amazing food!

User Ivy's positive review matches our own experience. We stayed here for two nights with three adults and one seven-year-old. I am giving this place for stars not because it's a four-star hotel relative to other hotels - it's too old for that - but because for the very low price we paid, we were more than satisfied with what we got. 

There is no doubt the hotel is faded and badly in need of renovation, but we found our room to be clean, very quiet, and well-appointed. The flat-screen TV is very large and there is a large desk with a decent seat (unlike in Drumheller where the seat was so bad I couldn't work at my computer). The beds were also decent and I slept well. The owners were really nice, outgoing and helpful and we were happy with the service.

I was most impressed with the breakfast, included in the price. You are given a sheet the day before to choose four items off a list which included fresh fruit, toast, pancake, French toast, eggs, bacon, ham, hash browns... I can't remember everything... and VEGETABLES! (plain steamed). There was plenty and the service was gentle and attentive. At the price of the room it could have been just toast and plastic-wrapped industrial muffins. Again the restaurant really needs renovation, but the breakfast was really great. 

Yes, there is a skate park across the street (a little bit down, actually) - but so what? In any case in the rooms there is no awareness of it because all the windows face off the other side of the hotel. I saw no evidence of the "weird people" mentioned in the review of a few years ago. If you have a kid with wheels they'll be quite happy there. 

Traffic noise is not a problem either. I found the place quiet.
