the owners price gouged, $350 for one night just because it was a long weekend (we had driven for 16 hrs, everything booked), for a $50 room, no offer of wifi, air conditioner didn't work great, the outside light shone right in the room, the cheap blinds didn't block it out, bathroom right where people walk by, window was open, could hear the people below us walking around

This is an average basic/budget motel, but it is clean and so a great value for the price ($45USD/$60CAD for a night including all taxes). It was one of a very few motels we found advertised online which was way less expensive than competitors yet also didn't have abysmally low customer ratings.

The room was basic but it did have a double bed with very clean linens and pillows, a small TV with cable, a mini fridge, and the bathroom was clean.

The reception office had a very strong stale cigarette smoke smell but fortunately our room did not. We had room #1, which initially had a pleasant odor of cleaning products, though that hid a very faint old cigarette smell in the background that I could smell all night and in the morning. We are both sensitive to that, so in the morning we each had a little bit of a sore throat. However, it was no big deal - a small price to save a lot of money.

Two other things going for this location: a few blocks to the east along the main road are two shopping plazas with supermarket and restaurants. We ate supper in the Savoy Deli, which was rather good, and breakfast in the Presse Cafe, which was extremely good. Also, a couple blocks to the west along the same road, cross the bridge, then take a right to take a little tour through Vieux Beloeil, which has a lot of beautiful old buildings situated along the river.

Hint: based on the conversations that the owners had with customer ahead of us in line, and with us, it appears that the price they normally ask for a room is the same sale price that third-party booking sites claim is a discounted rate. So, don't be tricked by "dot-coms"; call the motel and ask them the price. If it's higher, ask if they'll match the price you saw online. That way you get the same low price and the owner doesn't have to lose profit to a third party that's not helping you save money. Of the couple who run the motel, the woman speaks a lot of English, and the man at least a little.

5-star for the price

About 35 minute drive from downtown Montreal. FAR less expensive than the hotels in Montreal, we saved $100/night by staying here. 
This budget motel is exactly that.  The property was decent, it had been painted fairly recently but you could see its age. The lady working the desk (owner?) was friendly enough and spoke some English which was very nice for us, as we do not speak French. It smelled as if she had been smoking in the back, but it may have just been a very very strong musty smell. 
We got an upstairs room it too had a strong musty smell that never went away, despite leaving the windows open all night and the air on. At first the room was unimpressive, but we came to enjoy its simplicity. There was a bed, which we slept well on, an outdoor table with 2 chairs. We saw another couple move this outside to the walkway / patio area. a fridge, TV, all the basics in a small room. 
The bathroom was a bit eclectic, but it was clean. The tiles on the wall and shower were yellow and it was all very outdated, but in an almost eclectic/ charming way. The bottom of the shower had dried grout all around the drain. It looked really gross like a bunch of soap scum, but it was just spilled grout. 
The area surrounding the motel is very nice. If you come from Montreal you will drive right through Beloil which is a very nice town with bars and food. 
I don't think I would stay here again, but that is of no fault to the hotel. Being that I do not speak French I would highly consider staying closer to Montreal where English is easier to come by. If this not an issue for you, or if you want to save $100/ night, this is a good option.

Very average budget motel. Cute, eclectic.

This a very basic, older motel. Spotlessly clean and convenient. And considering the price, it IS excellent. Staff in the office are very pleasant and helpful, and there are great restaurants and coffee places round the corner. Try La Presse for breakfast.

Value for money

We needed a place to spend the night after passing by Montreal.  We happened to find the Motel Saint-Hilaire.  The rooms were $60 total.  They weren't deluxe but clean and comfortable. They included a small refrigerator, microwave, and flat screen TV.  The internet was really fast! I would be happy to stay there again!
