L'Auberge de Douglastown is a similar establishment to the hostel in a converted school located in Cap-aux-Os, near the Forillon national park. Both also serve as community centers, libraries, and multi-task venues for their respective towns.

Situated halfway between both towns, I felt that this hostel would be the perfect home base to explore Gaspé and Percé. And it is. You just need to stock up on food and other stuff on your way from Gaspé, for there is nothing in Douglastown but the gas station and its dépanneur.

The hostel boasts two institutional kitchens with everything you need to cook. It also has a nice common room, with TV, games, books, etc.

There is a huge backyard with kids' games and modules, and there are Adirondak chairs in front to take in the amazing views of the Douglastown barachois. The beach is a short walk down the street in front of the hostel.

I went for an economy room, which was quite spacious with two double beds.

The place is super clean, which is not something you can say of all hostels.

The staff is great. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable, always there to asnwer your questions and provide suggestions.

So why the 3-star rating? At this time of year, I found out the hard way that this hostel caters mostly to families. Forget about the backpackers/travelers' vibe and making new friends and exchanging stories over a beer or a glass of wine at night. It was a circus the two nights I was there.

Don't expect any peace of mind, as the families take control of every public area in the morning and in the evening. They show absolutely no respect to other guests and let their children run around screaming in the corridor early in the morning when you're trying to sleep, or leave the door to their rooms open so you have to put up with all the noise and the shouting and the crying. My last evening there, there were 16 kids in the kitchen/dining room area and it literally felt like a daycare gone awry.

There were three women seemingly traveling together with a bunch of 7-8 kids who were the worse. One of them is staying at the hostel for 10 weeks and they acted as if they own the place. Took up almost all the room in one of the three fridges in the kitchen area and showed no authority whatsoever when it came to rein in their children. I confronted one in the corridor one morning when her brood was running around and screaming at about 7:30am, asking if they could possibly keep the noise down so that people could sleep, and she just shrugged as if it wasn't her responsibility.

True, this is not the hostel's fault. They did tell me that they would warn families to show more respect to other travelers, but the harm was done.

Personally, had I booked for more than two nights, I would have had to cancel my stay. What annoys me is that, had the noise and all the crap been made by backpackers, they would have been promptly thrown out of the hostel. With good reason. So I think that the management need to hold parents accountable for their children's behavior so that all guests can enjoy all that this hostel has to offer. There can't be such a double standard.

Hence, even though l'Auberge de Douglastown offers all the amenities, even though you are like 5 minutes from the barachois and the beach, and even though the location is perfect to explore Gaspé, Percé, and everything in between, I can't quite recommend this place for backpakers or budget travelers. Families will simply ruin your stay.

I'm told that it's like that in July and August, so perhaps just steer clear of this period and you'll be fine.
