Stayed during a recent trip returning to the north. Due to recent Covid 19 safety precautions for the Territory, I had to self-isolate here and staff made it a very pleasant experience! Thank you, this hotel puts comfort and safety first!

The Staff was amazing with the new guidelines, making customers feel welcome and assuring guests that in these new times you will have a clean and disinfected room and restaurant as they are definitely following proper protocol.

Excellent Customer Service

We had to crash 3 nights in Hay River to get our truck fixed. The manager was really helpful, and did phone call for us to give us a better idea of how bad our truck could be... Had is cousin’s for us. He has been really kind to us and understood our bad situation and really flexible. It is not every hotel that let you crash with a sled dog truck of 30 dogs on board! Thanks again for everything!

Ptarmigan been really helpful to us

We stayed in a room with a kitchenette on the second floor. While it was right at the top of the steps from the lobby there was little noise from other guests. There was a queen bed and a single bed and a hide-a-bed couch. There was an armchair an armoire with a tv and a desk and chair. The kitchen was roomy but the setup was an older single unit stove, oven, sink and fridge. The dials were partly melted from the heat from the oven and it was hard to figure out which dial worked with which burner but we did manage. 

The bed was quite comfortable and we slept well. Our only complaint would be that there was nowhere to sit and eat. Between the kitchen and the living area there is a long narrow counter so we had stand-up meals.

The location is convenient. There is a North mart around the corner and a pub and a bank located in the building.

Large comfortable room

We had a room with kitchenette on the top floor. The room was a good size with a separate kitchen area, sleeping and lounge area with a sofa and armchair. The bathroom was recently renovated although the kitchen had been given a facelift rather than a full renovation. The furniture was standard hotel issue and whilst not new, was in good condition. The bed and the bedding were fine. Although we were near the top of the stairs, there are three sets of stairs so not everyone on the floor is tramping past the door at all hours so the stay was relatively quiet and we certainly slept well the four nights we were here. The hotel is in the centre of town, walking distance to all shops and amenities which allows a break from the car. The hotel also has a bar and restaurant. The only oddity in the room was there was no table other than a desk so, eating on the sofa or standing at a bench was the only option. The crockery supplied was a very odd assortment, eg shot glasses and wine glasses but no regular drinking glasses and only one bowl. Still a good stay and the staff service was excellent.

Great stay

My stopover at the Ptarmigan was due to a work commitment in the Town. I did not expect much as it is a smaller community and not likely to have first class accommodations. While that may be true, this hotel was very acceptable as it offered a decent room which was clean and relatively modern. I enjoyed a comfortable sleep and even the heating system seemed to work.

Clean, Reasonable, Comfortable

Hay River NT is a tiny community on the south shores of Great Slave Lake. For such a tiny town Ptarmigan Inn is a relatively big hotel and probably the best one, too given the harsh climate and adverse living conditions in Canada's far north. We stayed there twice on our way to and from Yellowknife after a long drive and were warmly welcomed by friendly and helpful staff. On our second visit we had a modernized room with an updated shower which was better than the first time and with less noise from the adjacent room. Overall a pleasant experience.

Best Hotel in a Tiny Northern Town

We stayed here twice, to and from our visit to Wood Buffalo National Park.  We were pleasantly surprised.

The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, and the area was quiet, but close to stores and services.  Front desk staff were cheerful and helpful, including providing extra k-cups for our morning coffee.

No real views out the window - we saw the back parking lot from one room, and the front parking lot and buildings across the street from the other.  I'm always hoping for something more scenic in locations like this.

Quite happy with this hotel

Obviously one cannot expect the Ritz when travelling to such remote places as Hay River but the Ptarmigan Inn delivers a comfortable stay in a semi quiet area of the town. The hotel has some renovated rooms which are quite well equipped and is going to further renovate. There is a gym in the basement and also a hair dresser next to the lobby. The restaurant in the hotel is very good serving a combination of tasty dishes starting with yummy spare ribs to delicious creamy Thai chicken soup and all sorts of burgers and steak. The cinema is right across the street so pretty convenient, too.
