Pre-Covid, when this B&B may have offered a breakfast, it may have been a nicer place to stay.  In August, 2022, no meals were available, and the house seemed somewhat seedy.  The weather was a bit gray during our 2+ days there, and even though there were no vacancies, the house was dark, empty, and musty.  It was definitely quiet.  The owner, Jalal, is a delightful gentleman who loves Cape Breton, and he undoubtedly works hard.  However, I think the older house has seen better days.  We stayed upstairs in the oldest part of the house, and it could be closed off as a suite, to include the adjoining sitting room and full bath.  That was a lot of space, which we appreciated, but we spend all day hiking and do not expect to stay in the room much.  We don't know about the condition of the newer rooms on the main floor.  If you are looking for a base for a multiple-day visit to the Cabot Trail, I would probably recommend Baddeck or the West Coast, rather than Indian Brook.  Between Baddeck and Ingonish, there is a very long drive with not so much to see or do.  There were a few small hikes along (and to the north of) the main road.  However, I'm not sure that trying to break it up by staying at the English Country Garden B&B was a good choice for us.

This place is getting a bit tired...

We spent 2 nights in August.  Stayed in the Conservatory Room which was really lovely and had everything we needed, a fridge, Tea/coffee making, glasses, fan etc.  En-suite had a roll top bath with a shower in it.  View from our room was out to the lake, sadly I didn't get to see the beavers that live in the lake. 
Excellent host, kept checking that we had everything we needed.  They are not doing breakfast at the moment but the Clucking Hen 5 mins down the road did an excellent breakfast.
Conservatory room is lovely but light in the morning which was fine for us, so if you like your mornings dark, book one of the other rooms.

Lovely comfortable room

Stunning grounds that include a lovely lily pond, hiking trail and gardens. Lush, green and well maintained. The room was beautiful and we really appreciated the tea service, kettle and choice  of tea right in the room. Having access to use the kitchen was great too. The host is so gracious, kind, and helpful. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely stay here.

We arrived at this B&B at 4 and another couple had been waiting for the owner to come he showed up 1/2 hr after what was suppose to be checkin time which was 4, the place looked like it was deserted the lawn was about 2 feet high and unkept gardens and the mosquitoes were unbelievable, the sea view was a swamp! I went in and the smell was terrible maybe mould or something and there some big black bugs in the room that was to be ours, I have allergies and I told him there was no way I could stay there cause of the smell he said to me I can get you a air freshener as if that was going to make the smell go away ! I called booking.com cause they handled my reservation and they got a hold of the owner and he refused to refund my money, but we did find a lovely spot down the road called the Sea parrot and it was a beautiful spot and great owners they were telling me that there’s new owners at the English country gardens and I guess the new owners don’t care about their property like the old owners! So I do not recommend that B&B nor do I recommend booking.com

Terrible place

We spent a night there on our trip through the Cabot Trail. Beautiful and well kept rooms. Furnished in beautiful period furniture. Beds were so comfortable. Quiet and immaculately clean. The owner was so friendly and welcoming. Lovely breakfast the next morning. 

Wonderful place! 

Due to the Covid pandemic, we had to cancel our entire trip down East. All the other hotels were more than happy to cancel without charge.  I called English Country Garden B&B  and spoke to the proprietor and he told me no problem and even sent an email to confirm that my deposit would be returned. Not only did I not receive the deposit but he charged my card with the balance so I actually  paid in full.  During a time when we should help and pull together, this person was only looking to get his money and didn't care about the customer. If you do stay there, make sure you cross your Ts and dot your Is.

Cancelled But Still Got Charged

A beautiful location on the world famous Cabot Trail. A lake is close by and the rooms are very cozy yet  elegant. We were married close by and spent the weekend there. A perfect romantic spot and lovely hosts. 

Honeymoon location!

Our hosts were incredibly thoughtful and made us feel right at home. 
Our room was modern, clean, bright, and spacious- we loved the decor! 
Nestled in the forest and facing the ocean, we found it was a beautiful location.  There are also lots of artisans in the area, though most were closed for the season. Fall is gorgeous for the colours and the peace, but count on most places being closed for the season. 
We didn't want to leave- it was truly a delight to be here.

This place was our favorite stay on our Maritime Provinces vacation.  We had an entire small house that was immaculate, with an interior of white, knotted pine lining the walls, giving it an even cleaner look.  It truly was a private cabin in the woods.  At night we slept with the windows open, listening to the night sounds and allowing the cool air to put us to sleep.  One evening we cooked dinner in our kitchen and just relaxed after a long day of hiking.  The owner was a gracious host and seemed to really value our being there, unlike other B&B’s that make you feel as though you are a bother.  Our first breakfast was a bit plain but the second one was very good.  We hope to return.

We had no idea what to expect from this B&B, and certainly didn’t expect to be sleeping in “The Russian Room” at an English Garden style B&B but it was an unexpected, wonderfully comfortable, quirky treat to be sleeping in this opulently decorated, extremely well-maintained and clean room for the night. 

There are tons of dvd’s and books to borrow and a cute landing with chairs to sit on outside overlooking a peaceful small lake.

Though the breakfast was delicious, I wish their had been some choice as I don’t eat eggs and was served an omelette style thing. There was toast and a delicious chocolate chip zucchini bread so I didnt go hungry. The location doesn’t have much around as far as restaurants etc. so we drove into Sydney for lunch.

We arrived late in the evening after Sydney, so we met the owner the next morning at breakfast. What a sweetheart! Friendly and warm, clearly wanting his guests to have a wonderful stay. He has been in the hotel business for a long time so knows what is important to guests. We had a very comfortable sleep and enjoyed our stay.
