Super affordable (1/3 price of other hotels) dormitory with shared bathroom in a central location within 2 block of McGill Metro and bus. No AC but $2 fan rental was available although none were available on our first night and it was airless, hot and miserable in the room during a heatwave in July. Things improved substantially when we were able to rent 2 fans, 1 per person and pointed to our beds. Our large room contained 2 single beds, 2 desks, large walk-in closet & a small refrigerator. There was no screen on the window but luckily no mosquitoes on the 5th floor. The room was at the corner of Sherbrooke & faced Rue University and the noise was acceptable especially with the fan running. There was a shared bathroom with 2 showers, a toilet stall and 3 sinks with mirrors. There is also a separate bathroom with a tub (with signs of disuse), toilet and sink. Although we saw other guests on our section of about 5 rooms, we never needed to wait for showers later in the evening or early in the morning. Bath towel, hand towel, wash cloth & a bar of soap were provided but there was no daily service for new towels. It was a decent stay given the affordable price and excellent location. If I were to stay at Royal Victoria College again, I would definitely bring my own fans and be mentally prepared for no AC.

Affordable & great location but no AC

Ideal location for solo/friends travellers, not for family but you know that because is a College residence. You can find everything you need around this residence and Downtown is just footsteps away. This place made my stay in Montreal, a small cozy room. If all you need is a clean bed, shower and bathroom this the perfect place where you can stay, so is a GREAT location right downtown and WELL PRICED. Was a perfect solution for me as a solo traveler. Just one more thing: there is not airconditioning, but you have a fan so you can sleep well during summer. Wifi can be spotty.

Great location right downtown and well priced

I stayed for a week and could not wait for the week to be over. The staff are friendly and very helpful, but the hostels need an uplift. The bathrooms were not cleaned daily and the carpets on the corridors need to be changed. Good for the pocket though.

Summer visit

The Royal Victoria College Residence exterior is stunning! As you enter the building through old oak doors, the residents is light an more modern looking. The building has only been half renovated though, so be sure to check what area of the building you are staying in, especially in the summer. If your room is on the upper, non renovated levels, be sure to rent a fan, if not two, from the front desk. The rooms get stiflingly hot to the point where sleep can be difficult. The rooms were all a good size, and were clean and tidy. 

I would definitely visit back, just not during the heat of summer.

Collegiate, but very hot

Unfortunately, not very satisfied with this McGill residence. The photos online are very deceiving and are nothing like the actual residence. 

The building is very old and rundown, therefor things don't work properly like the shower water cutting in and out and sticky doors. 

The rooms themselves are fairly clean, although dated and worn from use. In terms of sleep quality, the beds are comfortable but there is lots of noise from inside the residence, light coming in from around the doors and no black out curtains. There is no A/C either, so be prepared for a hot night. 

One plus is a fairly central location close to a metro station. 

There is a shared kitchen on the main floor, although it is very small, there are few utensils and there is only one microwave that is very low power. 

Overall, I'm disappointed with my stay and there are hostels that offer superior lodging. I expected more from a university like McGill. 

Looks can be deceiving 

Stayed here two nights - perfect location near city centre/ metro - nice and cheap student residence ideal for someone just wanting a bed for the night - to anyone complaining about lack of aircon get a grip

Cheap & Cheerful

Though staff is very nice and parking is available. There is no ac! Ya you heard me right. Terrible nights sleep. Spend more money and get some where with AC. Not worth the bargain in the summer months.
