We loved the cottage with its big deck and view of the water and Port Hood Island. Very private with wild meadow next door. Minimal but adequate kitchen. European style queen bed with two duvets. Spacious living room with good sofa and chair. They advertised their private beach but we found it in-accessible. Steps down ended at large boulders we would have had to climb over. Port Hood has five sand beaches where we had a couple of lovely walks. A half hour north is the Red Shoe restaurant with great food and good Acadian/Gaelic music.

Beautiful cottage on the shore of Bay St. Lawrence

We just loved our stay here and like other reviewers we wish we had stayed longer. We stayed in one of the cabins and it had everything you could need. It was immaculately clean. The views of the ocean were breathtaking and the location was great being walking distance to the beach and a couple of restaurants. We hope to make it back again one day!

Perfect Stay

We started our Cabot Trail drive by spending our first night at Haus Treuburg. It spoiled us for the rest of the trip! Nothing else was a lovely! The cabin was lovely and immaculate! We truly had an ocean view we could walk to and our own deck we could sit out on to enjoy the evening. The sunset up the road at Sunset beach recommended by Georg left us breathless! The breakfast prepared by Elvi and Georg was delicious and cooked to perfection. We chose the pretzel breakfast! We highly recommend it. After completing the Cabot Trail we all said we wished we'd stayed here longer and explored the beaches and boardwalks longer.

Wish we'd booked more nights here!

We stayed in the house. The room was perfect for us. It had plenty of room and the bathroom was really spacious. The walk down to the beach was awesome.  The highlight was the breakfast, where for $10 you could have a selection of beautifully made and presented foods. It doesn't have a great TV, but we were busy checking out the area so we didn't need it anyway.  

Quaint with a great breakfast

We originally planned on spending only two nights in Port Hood after a long drive to get to Cape Breton Island. We had made reservations with hosts Elvi & Georg Kargoll at Haus Treuburg, but only met Elvi in person. We ended up staying in Cottage #3 for three nights and were very pleased with the accommodations. The location of both the cottages and B&B is great, as it’s overlooking the warm-water beach (well, warm for Nova Scotia) and is located next door to the local grocer. It was perfect for us, as the cottage had a barbeque and small kitchen which included dishes and other necessities. The bedroom was spacious, as was the living area and deck. The bathroom included a full bathtub, which was unexpected, and I was especially pleased that the soap was hypo-allergenic. Sometimes the little things make all the difference. My husband and I would happily stay at Haus Treuburg again!

Picturesque Location

We spent two nights in one of the cottages on this property and loved out stay. The cottage was uncluttered but had everything we needed. The design and amenities were well thought out for comfort and convenience.  We enjoyed evenings on the large, private deck with a lovely view over the water. The central town location was great, right next door to a grocery store and within walking distance to restaurants, but still peaceful. We would happily stay here again if we returned to Port Hood.

Comfortable Cottage

Stayed in the main house in one of the upstairs guest rooms. Room was moderate size and done in a German/European cottage style. Everything was neat and very clean and the bathroom was huge. Bed was comfortable. Owners were friendly.

On the down side, there was really no tv to speak of. It was the size of a computer monitor and the reception was terrible. There was also no fridge. The drapes did not close completely and let in a lot of morning light. There was a lot of noise on the roof caused I think by the wind (not sure exactly).

I would like to rate this place higher, but u fortunately the above issues prevent that.

Adequate B&B type experience

Its dated, but sufficient, nothing off-putting.
Front porch view is what you go/for, pay/for.
Inside it dated. We stayed one night: I wouldnt return or long-stay.  Look for something else even if it cost a bit more.
Not sorry we went but...

Go for the view!  Cabin is ok enough

Even though this is a 104 year building it has been updated with modern toilets...so no outhouse to travel to.  

The inside is mostly old knotty pine.  The rooms carry on that theme with more knotty pine but updated with painted walls, electric fireplace, coffee maker and 
tv.  So, all the modern conveniences.

For extra dollars you can get a full German breakfast or in the evening a five course dinner.  

Everything was clean and the room was quiet.  You will not get cold with the down coverlets.

Our host was very helpful in providing information and making some calls for us to find a lost phone.

No Outhouse

Haus Treuburg is a quiet house with plenty of parking.  We wanted a location that was past Mabou but not too far past--this location worked out well because we were able to hear Celtic music in Mabou and still arrive at Haus Treuburg by around 8 or 8:30 PM.  We were not there long enough to explore the outside property, but the inside is an artful blend of maybe late 19th century traditional and modern European fixtures and decor.  Breakfast is an additional charge, but we actually thought that was a plus because if you don't have the time or it's not your style you don't feel you've paid for a meal you didn't eat.  We did stay for breakfast, and it was quite good...sort of a smorgasbord.  The bed was quite comfortable.  I don't recall whether or not there was a kitchenette--I don't think so.
