I stayed at the Pioneer Inn for six days in September and was very impressed with the service.  When I said I was cold, I was brought the heater from the manager's office.  When I went to pour myself a free coffee in the lobby, my host said, "I'll make you a fresh pot". There is a huge fridge, a microwave and a stove for making your own meals, and a BBQ on the deck.  A place to stay in Prince Rupert that is close to historic Cow Bay, has free parking, and definitely has wonderful service.

Nothing is too much trouble for staff

The staff is friendly and helpful.  The room I stayed in was small but clean and the bed was comfortable.  I noted a mattress protector on the bed and the flooring was laminate, therefore easy to clean.  Washrooms are shared, but immaculate. There is a TV in the common room downstairs and the kitchen is well equipped for making your own coffee and meals.  Evidently management lives on the premises and this is a safe and quiet place to stay.  There are many interesting shops and great restaurants nearby.  Good value for the price if you are comfortable with basics.

Clean, cozy and quiet

Everything about the Pioneer Hostel is great.
The building itself is very quaint (old?), a beautiful shade of bright blue, and centrally located in Cow Bay & 5 minutes on foot to the CBD.
The staff are very nice, kind, helpful, welcoming, & good at recommending things to do, how to get somewhere, how to book something.
There's free coffee in the kitchen.
The place is so amazingly clean that I think you could eat off the floors.
They have a brilliant laundry, available in the afternoon / evening.
They have private rooms, but the dorm is really excellent: 8 beds (not bunks!) in three interconnected rooms with a big locker each & a nice spacious bathroom / toilet.  Nice view out the dorm windows!  I saw a fox ambling down the street, peeking in shop windows at night!  Check out the view from the bathroom window; trees, the back of the Court House, B.C. flag waving proudly from its flagpole.
The kitchen is spacious & well stocked with cooking gear.  There's a small dining area & a little gazebo out the back.
The common room is sort of the front room with 2 computers, board games, TV, DVDs, radio, a book swap library & extremely comfortable sofas & chairs.
This hostel caters for people travelling on the ferries (BC Ferries & the AMHS); they stay open... or a staff member is willing to get out of bed... for late arrivals, & they let you leave your bags in the hostel, and use the common room if you have a late departure.  
The hostel's a 5 minute walk to the bus stop that takes you to the 2 ferry terminals.  And it's a 5 minute walk to the bus that takes you to the boat that takes you to the airport.
As you exit the hostel, turn right, walk past the rose coloured shop next door, and turn left down that first laneway... And there you are; at the Sunken Garden; the most beautiful spot in all Prince Rupert... not to mention a handy & scenic short cut into town.

Absolutely the best

I bookended my trip to the Great Bear Rainforest by staying at the Pioneer Inn. I stayed in a private room and it was simple, but clean and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with tea and coffee and has all of the amenities. The common area at the front of the hostel and out back near the fire pit are good spots to meet fellow travellers. Great value for money and met my expectations. I'd stay here again.

Cozy, comfortable and clean

Once you recover from the blast of cigarette smoke that greets you in the lobby and get into the staircase its not too bad.
The rooms, well, lets just say it was a refreshing reminder of why the 1970’s decor should stay in the 1970’s !
The parking is behind the building, right next to the homeless guys van packed to the hilt. No security cameras, poor lighting. It is what it is. 
The lights need replaced. Also, it looks like this place was bought from Coast Hotels and Resort and Prince Rupert Hotel was too cheap to purchase new signs so they just put stickers over the old ones.
Overall its better than where i stayed last time.

Better than most

We arrived late in the night as our train was delayed, but there was someone at the reception to acknowledge our booking and guided us to our room on the first floor up a narrow flight of stairs. At first we were surprised at the small size of our room, but being tired we dropped off to sleep in the comfy beds. This guesthouse is really a hostel with private rooms as well.

Later we appreciated the compactness of our private room as it had a small table big enough for my laptop, a small fan and lamp, a shelf to keep stuff and a coat rail with about ten hangers, and a small cabinet in one corner of the room. There was a common room at the lobby where one could watch TV and also had two workstations and an ironing board. Free tourist literature was available in the bookshelves. The washrooms were shared ones just adjacent to our room and provided with soap, shampoo, tissues and toilet paper.

There was even a community kitchen where we would cook and have our meals and saved a lot of money by having one meal in the hostel. However the laundry and dryer were not working and we had to visit a laundromat about a 10 minute walk away. Parking is available in an open ground outside the hostel.

Many of the attractions, shopping places and harbour are nearby at Cowbay and Downtown and we would easily walk the distance. The beautiful Sunken Garden is very close and we would often walk through the garden to reach Cowbay in quick time.

We enjoyed our stay at the hostel and would definitely come back again.

Cozy Room.

We booked a double room with an ensuite bathroom. Like most travellers, we reached Prince Rupert with a ferry from Port Hardy which arrives around midnight. We have been sending messages to the Hotel days before, two or three times, through Booking, to make sure we would be able to get the room at that late time. No response. We called them directly, no answer: I left a message on the answering machine. When we arrived, the receptionist handed us our keys and said we were in room 5. By chance, my partner was looking at the map of the room and realised room 5 did not have a bathroom, so I asked, would we have the bathroom as per our booking. "Oh, about that: you know, we've been trying to reach you to inform you that the room you booked was not available. All we have is a room with shared bathroom, we hope that will be ok." No, it was not ok. We were offered a 5% discount and at that time of night we didn't venture into looking for another hotel in town, which we obviously would have done if we had known in advance they were overbooked. No answer to our messages and surely no attempt to inform us about the room change, knowing that by arriving late we would be forced to accept whatever they had. On top of this, the structure is very old and looks nothing like the fresh rooms you see in the pictures. Nothing.

A terrible experience.

I didn't have a tape measure along but I think our room was 7 foot 6 inches by 9 foot 6 inches. Bathrooms were down the hall. It was clean and only had a fan to keep us cool on a hotter day. The bed was comfy but small for 2. There was a fold down table beside the bed but once down where would one put your stuff. No TV. The stairs up to the second floor were steep and in need of repair. The front edge of the step nosing was coming off and could have caused a fall. The location in Cow Bay was close to restaurants and the tunnel to the sunken garden was just behind. I would not recommend this place at the price they asked.

Rooms Are Very, Very Small!

Made a reservation via phone for a pet-friendly room. When we arrived, we were told that they mistakenly did not block the room and someone made an internet reservation after us and arrived before us and the room was no longer available. Left us scrambling to find other lodging at what turned out to be a much higher rate.
