This is clearly not a 5-star hotel in the normal sense of the term – it’s extremely basic with almost no services. But our experience there was 5-star - a big gamble that paid off for us.  
I had never heard of an ‘automatic hotel’ when I found this on the CAA website while looking for a place for 2 nights in Quebec City before our cruise. Most hotels in the Old Quebec area near the shore and cruise port are extremely expensive. This moderately-priced hotel seemed too good to be true, so I wondered what the catch was. The ‘catch’ is that you are on your own – it is ‘staffless’ in the evenings and overnight, and there are few amenities. I wondered if it were legit and safe, but we decided to take the chance since CAA listed it.
So glad we did! Entry was a little scary as we arrived after dark and the outside door of the double-entry doors stuck a bit, making me fear that we were locked out. But after a push the outside door opened, and we used our code (sent by email a couple of days before our reservation) to gain entry through the inside door. From there, we retrieved our room key from the automated lock box system in the lobby (instructions also received via email), and voila – we were in. Tip – to make this process easier, make sure to watch the video that accompanies the emailed instructions – it shows how to get your key from the lock box.
The room was quite lovely and clean, with an antique writing desk, comfortable bed, and updated washroom. The building itself is of course vintage, built right along the rampart wall high above the coast. Wifi was reliable and extra supplies (towels, soap, etc) were in a closet in the hallway if you needed them. Other than that, it was very quiet. 
Best reasons for booking this hotel – quiet, comfortable, no frills, and walking distance to all the major tourist spots – Citadel, Plains of Abraham, etc. We got 20,000 steps in walking around them all in one day, enjoyed the view from our room, and saved a bundle of $$. Tip: We thought we could walk to the cruise port as it’s only an 8 minute walk, but there’s a steep cobblestone road involved. The day we left, it had rained and the stones were wet, so we decided it was safer to take a taxi. We could have walked carefully if it had been dry. 


So glad we tried this!

This is essentially a hostel masquerading as a hotel. The room was cramped with a tiny bathroom. We knew there was no reception, but for £200 a night, I thought like every other hotel I've stayed in, they would make up the beds and change the towels. We were subsequently told where clean towels are stored! We asked the cleaner to make up the room, and he said he would. It was dispiriting to return back after a lovely day in the old town to find the room exactly as we'd left it.
It is well positioned just a few minutes' walk from the centre of the old town, so no complaints about the location.

Non existent services

Basic accommodation - lots of stairs and as it says, no parking.  We were on 2nd floor front with great views of the harbour.  On positive note the TV was large, the bed was fairly firm, we had AC and a fridge.  Bathroom clean but very small squeeze.  Room not attended by staff, we picked up clean towels and shampoo from storage. Hairdryer provided.  Lighting of room is low…hard to see in mirror unless in bathroom.  Paper cups only. 
On negative side… Only 5 coat hangers so glad I brought my own, no plug in bath so shower was only option.  Shampoo and soap available but no conditioner.  Shower kept switching from scalding hot to freezing cold!!  They would have got 4* if the shower worked probably and we had a bath plug.  Very few places to put things for convenience… not much shelf space.  We used the roof terrace once and enjoyed this space of an evening with wine purchased locally.  Is up 3 flights of stairs and you crouch to get thru the door.  2 sunbeds there plus table and chairs.  Check in was frustrating as the keypad was out of calibration.  Good value for money on a short stay basis. 

Good value for location if a little basic

You are unlikely to sleep well in this place due to the plumbing noises that  can be heard each time one of your neighbors takes a shower or uses the toilet. 
Perhaps that’s not true - you may be so tired from lugging your cases up the narrow stairs (there is no elevator) that you would sleep through the noise.
This hotel has fully automated check in. There are no staff members around to assist, help with queries or provide useful information on what to do in Quebec City. There is an emergency number that you can ring if required, but this may not be much help if you are a foreign traveler without a local sim and can’t open the front door. This is budget accommodation  - spartan rooms in an old building with rooms retrofitted to provide a tiny bathroom.


avoid unless desperate 

We had two rooms for two nights. Rooms are basic, but clean and comfortable enough. However, our shower didn't work, the neighbour's window leaked during a rainfall and she had quite a flood in her room, the room keys didn't work for two other guests during our stay and they couldn't get service in French so we had to interpret for  them. When our flooded neighbour contacted the owner to complain, he was very defensive and implied we were difficult. However, the price is right and the location is pretty good. I wouldn't stay there again, but it might suit some. Note: no elevators, so must climb stairs to rooms. No parking, nearest public parking is a 10 minute walk away.

Lots of problems....

An automated hotel sounded strange but worked very well, room was great with excellent views, good coffee, the remote service was great, and during the day there were people there to help.  Only issue, no closet or place to hang clothes!

Great location, reasonably priced, excellent service

We arrived at the hotel, needing a place to stay 1 night after a cruise. I emailed the hotel to see if I could drop my luggage ahead of check in, which they said I could. We uber'd from the ship bcuz the walk was uphill (approx $12). A man gave me the code to a room I could leave my bag. Later we checked in and some customers were having trouble with the automated check in to get your key, but after a couple of attempts we were able to get our key.  Another man was trying to summon help with the emergency number, but no one was coming immediately.  THERE IS NO ELEVATOR, & THE 1ST STAIRWAY IS NARROW. The hotel was like a French hotel in Europe.  Kind of small, but adequate. Fine for us.  We even had a bath. On the 3rd floor is a balcony overlooking the cruise port & St Lawrence River. Nice in the summer eve. Town is just around the corner, although we did have a couple of interruptions at 2am from the public walk way.  If you were to have a problem in your room, it wouldn't be convenient to summon help, but we had what we needed and all was well.  The cleaning staff did just leave her cart visible, but we never saw her/him.  The bed was a bit hard. 

Totally automated hotel

Stayed at Manoir des Ramparts for two nights earlier this year (February 2022). Booked it based on the location and price; much more affordable compared to other nearby properties. Location is fantastic, close enough to the city center, while being far enough for peace and quiet. Right along the fortification wall, with beautiful views. Check-in was easy and quick with the automation system they use. We knew in advance not to expect a front desk or normal hotel amenities, and didn’t miss them. No parking at the property – we opted to quickly drop our bags and then park our car in an underground lot in the city center since we had dinner plans. Just a 5 minute walk back to the hotel. Property is well-maintained and felt very clean. The room had all of the basics of what we needed for our stay with a comfortable bed. Stayed in a street facing room and did not have any issues with sound. Would stay again recommend to others!

Great value. Clean and comfortable room near city center with view!

The automated hotel (check-in with code) is located in the historical part of Quebec and is situated on a hillside - those who are not walking well should know that.  The price/quality ratio is very good for this location. The rooms are small, clean and simply furnished. If you are unlucky, there is a noisy air condition in front of the window, but since there is no concierge, there is nothing you can do about it. The roof terrace offers a fantastic view.

Good deal in historic city centre

First of all, I checked reviews on this locations, and the hotel really delivers on that matter. We were 250m away from Chateau Frontenac and all the other amenities in Old Town Quebec. Rooms are good size, bathroom is typical 3-piece layout and very clean, beds are with very firm mattresses. It's a very good choice for traveling on a budget, but there are some downsides coming with this choice: check-in could be difficult with only one employee on site, no escalator, no coffee maker in rooms, our room 205 didn't have a closet (only a chest drawer), balcony door was trapped with 3ft of snow, not so much of a view, no parking lot at the hotel. But if you are OK with all of this, be prepared to free your soul of any modern city legacy and enjoy this charming little hotel and its location. Walking distance to almost anything Old Town has to offer, plenty of good restaurants and a variety of site-seeing locations. Please do not miss the following: Les Secrets Nordiques (dog sledding at Mont Sainte-Anne, 25 min drive), Ice Hotel (Beaupre, 30min drive), Sleigh ride (Plains of Abraham), Museum of Civilization, La Citadelle, Notre-Dame Basilica. Underground garage is cheap (by TO means), dining is at affordable level. Recommended restaurants: L'Omlette, Parmesan, The Hubert, La Buche. Feel free to let your spirit roam through the architecture and culture this city has to offer. Recommended time: Winter Carnival (second week of February), prepare warm clothes and shoes and enjoy the winter in its original form while we still have it!
