On arrival we were offered a bigger room, which was much brighter than the one we'd booked. The room had everything we needed. 
The shower was a squeeze but we knew that in advance. 
It was slightly weird to have the sink in the bedroom rather than in the bathroom. Useful to have a separate kitchenette. 
There was a large communal outdoor area for late night music, a glass of wine and a cigar. 
Easy to park close by and to walk into town. 
Breakfast of waffles and fruit was a delight, where the owners joined us and told delightful stories.

Delightfully Quirky B&B

Unfortunately, our stay at this lovely bed and breakfast was only one night, but it was a fantastic night and morning. The owners called me prior to our arrival to ensure I had instructions for parking and how to get into the room and main space, as well as to get preferences for breakfast the next morning. We did arrive after they had left for the evening, but we were able to check into our room with ease.

The Inn is an old Victorian house near downtown Saint John. It features a number of rooms within the house, a couple rooms with private entrances attached to the back, as well as a carriage house that has a few additional rooms. It also has a lovely courtyard/garden with tables for chilling outside, which we did!

We stayed in the Shamrock Room, which was decorated in an old farmhouse style. The room featured a sink in the room and a small bathroom with stand up shower stall and toilet. It also had a small kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker, all of which was unexpected. There was a counter with stools for eating in the room. The bed was comfortable and soft, though the room got a little warm as there is no air conditioning. Thankfully, the air outside was cool and the neighborhood quiet. So we left a window open.

The breakfast the next morning was phenomenal, and the owners were very friendly and fun to speak with about the town and our travels. They were very knowledgeable about the area.

The only downside is that they only take cash or e-transfer (Canadian banks only). So I had to walk a few blocks to go to an ATM, which was not an issue. I'm pretty sure they told me it was that way when I booked, but that was several months prior to our stay. So I likely forgot (or assumed e-transfer meant Venmo or PayPal, as I am not Canadian).

I would certainly stay here again if I find myself in Saint John. It was a perfectly lovely night in a cute little city.

Classic charm in the heart of Saint John

My wife and I visited the Earle of Leinster B&B in the middle of our two-week vacation in the Canadian Maritime provinces. We had found this place online, and it look cozy and "home-like," so we went with it. From the very moment we arrived, Dwight & Carol (the proprietors) made us feel incredibly at home. Dwight has a smile that never seems to leave his face, and they both try their best to make you feel very much at home. Our room, which was on the second floor, was in the front of the house, and was incredibly comfortable. It was decorated entirely in Victorian style, with all kinds of attractive decorations and furniture throughout. Dwight seemed to know where everything in the house had come from, much like a historian in a country museum. We were further treated to a WONDERFUL breakfast on each of our four mornings in St John, with plates laden with bacon, eggs, waffles, homemade jams, and lots more. And they always seemed to make sure that everyone in the kitchen was comfortable with one another, which made for great conversation. They even had a billiard table in the cellar. Dwight had warned us that the parking on the street could be a little bit tricky, but it was never an issue. They also kept us updated on all kinds of places to visit around the local area. In summary, WE LOVED this place, and truly enjoyed the help and friendship of the owners. I would recommend this to anyone, for a comfortable and affordable stay in St. John.

What a fantastic place to stay!

We stayed here for almost two weeks and it felt like home. Everyday there was an amazing home cooked breakfast ready for us. It’s right in the heart of Saint John so there is a lot to do right nearby. The room was exactly what we needed for the trip and was very clean. We would recommend this to anyone. 5 stars all the way.

Wonderful place

We arrived after hours without a place to stay not the wisest move but it ended up being a wonderful 3 days. We Called the Earle of Leinster Inn Style bed and breakfast, spoke to a wonderful man who met us at the Inn and showed us the last room available-it was wonderful.A century home with period style furnishings and eclectic Knick knacks making it warm and inviting. Also has a pool table in basement that was fun
Dwight and Cheryl were wonderful and full of great tips for making our visit to  St John amazing. 
The inn is close many tasty pubs and restaurants we parked our car and didn’t use it again until we were ready to leave 
Cheryl made us a delicious stuffed french toast with berries and whip cream, side of bacon and good coffee. 
We would highly recommend this Inn for anyone visiting St John and we will definitely be back. Thank you again Cheryl for all your visiting/travel tips.

2 night stay in St John

My stay here pretty much ruined my vacation in Saint John -- the room (the Lord Edward)  was dark and the little usable floor space was taken up by huge brown-wood furniture and junk store "finds" -old cameras, violin, huge unusable typewriter etc.  The bedding, carpet, wallpaper, mattress etc. seemed like they had been updated in the 1980s and then forgotten -  a step back in time, but not in a good way.  The area around the Band B (I stayed there 10 years ago), like SJ itself, now has less character than it used to thanks to the construction of a lot of super-bland new buildings.   If you like rose-patterned wallpaper from the 1980s and lots of teacups and plastic flowers everywhere, though,  this is your place.  I had planned to stay for a few nights but bailed after one - I wish I had turned around and left once I saw the room.   It is places like this which make some people prefer characterless corporate hotels.

Cluttered, dark and smelly

Caught the owner using his key to access my room when he was not aware I was watching.  Stay clear of this place if you value privacy. Would not recommend due to the creepy vibe given off by the owner.

Owner snoops in your room!

I stayed at the heritage-inspired Earle in uptown Saint John for over two weeks, so got to know the place pretty well. The inn itself is great; well kept, clean, and a much more interesting boutique-style stay than a hotel, and it is well located in the uptown area.

I will point out that Saint John's city cente is called "uptown"....there is no downtown in SJ, so the Earle is within easy walking distance to the shops, restaurants, art galleries, and museum. More about those later.

I stayed in two of the rooms. I first stayed in The Study for a week. This room is a fair size and masculine in vibe....it is like a gentleman's study of the 1800s. There is a little kitchen with everything you need for light meals, and most importantly, a coffee maker and kettle. There are interesting little details everywhere you look, like vintage magazines and antique objects. There is a table to sit at, which was nice, and a TV. 

I migrated to The Parlour and stayed there for 10 days. It is much more spacious and fancier than The Study, with red velvet couches and a very grand bed. There were also lots of antique objects around the room, as well as in drawers and cupboards, which added to the old-fashioned atmosphere and feeling of the people's lives back in the 1800s. The kitchen and bathroom were also bigger. The bed and pillows were very, very comfortable in the Parlour. I think they were made of some kind of memory foam. 

The hot water and water pressure was good and the wifi was stable enough to work while I was there. I skipped the breakfasts because I am not a breakfast person, but the waffles I saw being served to another guest looked very decadent. 

I thought because it is an old building, it would be very creaky and the sound would be traveling through the walls. But it was either an exceptionally quiet bunch staying there or they  have done some kind of soundproofing, because I never heard a sound all night once I was in my room. 

As mentioned, the Earle of Leinster is very well placed in the city of Saint John. While there is lots of nature to explore in the area which is typical of New Brunswick, I will stick see what you can find within walking distance. There are too many places to mention here, but I recommend Steamers (has dinner theater sometimes), Grannans, and Billy's Seafood Company, and there were many more that looked great but we didn't get a chance to try. A very good cafe within walking distance is Catapult Coffee, where you can also buy handmade goods including really good quality soaps and candles from local artisans. 

Another must see if you are in SJ is the City Market, where you can buy arts, crafts, and souvenirs in addition to all sorts of local food items. Linda, an artist who is set up in the middle of the market, has affordable drawings of the Saint John area. There is a craft store at top of the market that has a really wonderful collection of arts/crafts. Handworks on King Street is a bigger gallery with a large curated selection of East Coast art, and there were a more galleries uptown that were also fantastic.

The New Brunswick museum is close, too, but it will be closed for renos until Spring 2022.

So....I highly recommend the Earle of Leinster. The hosts Dwayne and Cheryl were warm and welcoming and even took the time to help me move rooms when I had a an emergency and had to run off to deal with it. I think this Inn is probably one of the best places to stay in SJ.

A Great Experience

We enjoyed our two night stay.  Our room was quiet, clean, interesting and relaxing.  Parking wasn’t an issue, and the location was perfect for a stroll to Market Square.  Cheryl makes a great breakfast- stuffed French toast, waffles with delicious whipped cream!  Having a kitchen available to us was appreciated, too.  We felt right at home.

Step back in time

we were driving through NB and had decided to stop in St John again.  The Earle is located only a few blocks from the "core" area.  The room is in an older building but the owners have done a nice job in refurbishing it.    The room was a bit small but quite manageable.  Breakfast was very nicely made (pancakes) and very filling.  The hosts were very friendly and helpful.  Street parking was available. 
I would visit again.
