My husband joined me on a Memoir Writing Retreat with our excellent teacher, our fabulous hosts Kevin and Kim Foster, with six other wonderful participants. 
It was magical: the accommodation, the gourmet food, the bonds created, the learning experience, the location at the Old Rectory B & B. We highly recommend this venue!

Amazing Writers Retreat

When I was originally booking my trip to Stratford, I was looking at the Bruce Inn, but was unable to get it for the nights I wanted. I found this place just by looking at Expedia's map view, because I wanted a place close to the downtown area of the city. I had no idea at the time that this place was rated #1 of 79 B&Bs in Stratford - I found that out after I got home. But I can see why.

The place is located right at the edge of the downtown area of Ontario Street, so everywhere we wanted to go was easily walkable. Lots of great restaurants only minutes away (we ate at Mercer Hotel, Fosters, and Gene's Chinese), the waterfront and Shakespeare Gardens were close by, and of course all the shops. The theatres were also close by, which might be useful info for when covid ends and the shows start up again.

The room we stayed in was in the Coach House (separate from the main house). It had things that you'd expect, of course - a bed, a table and chairs for eating breakfast, and a washroom. But it also had much more - a stairway led up to a loft sitting area that had a couch (pull-out), lounge chair, coffee table, and a smart TV (with a Netflix account already logged in). Plus, it had a tassimo coffee machine (and pods), tea kettle (and tea), various bowls, plates, cutlery, a toaster, cutting board & knife, iron, ironing board, and likely other stuff that I'm not remembering. There was an outdoor patio in the back as well, although it was too chilly at this time of year to enjoy it.

Kim and Kevin had their covid-related processes ironed out pretty well. Kevin mentioned that pre-covid, people would have breakfast in the main house, but for now they've put a stop to that. There's an intercom in the room, so for breakfast, I'd just buzz them, and they'd show up at the door around 5 minutes later with breakfast on a tray. We'd eat it in the room, and when we finished, we'd put the dirty dishes in a tray and put it out in the back patio, where they'd pick it up. They'd then refresh the coffee mugs and cutlery.

What I really liked about this place is the friendliness of both Kim and Kevin as well as the food. They both wanted to make sure that we had everything we needed and were comfortable (do we need more coffee pods, etc), but they weren't intrusive about it. As for the breakfast, since I had never stayed in a B&B before, I didn't know what to expect, but I had it in my head that it'd be something like bacon and eggs, toast, sausages, hash browns, etc. I couldn't have been more wrong. I got chatting with Kevin a couple of times, and he told me that he likes to change up the food, and I guess I had mentioned a couple of things about different kinds of food because later on he told me that he just went with it. One breakfast was sort of a quiche-like thing (I'm not sure exactly what it was) with bacon and their homemade chutney sauce. Another was a taco with sausage, yams, peppers, onions, sour cream, and guacamole (and probably other stuff). Our last was a pasty-like thing with asparagus, mushrooms, and other stuff. All of these were delicious. All breakfasts also came with a bowl of fresh fruit, yogurt, and a big basket of various breads (the in-room fridge had been pre-stocked with butter, homemade jams, etc). 

I would definitely stay here again.

Great accommodation, great food, and friendly owners.

The breakfasts were delicious with lots of personal attention.  Lovely home.  We especially appreciated that Kim and Kevin gave us so much information about the city and attractions.  We would stay there again

Kevin and Kim were great hosts.  The B&B was charming.

If you want a fantastic, traditional B&B experience, this is a gem. It has it all - the room, the food, the atmosphere, the friendly attention, the gardens. Kevin, the amiable and chatty host, makes you feel completely at home. And his breakfast cooking is delicious. Every detail is perfect. Our room even had a private balcony that overlooked the gorgeous gardens. We've stayed at many B&B over the years in Stratford, and this is truly the best.

Best B&B in Stratford

Kevin and Kim are amazing, congenial and kind hosts, and accommodating to their guests in every way.  The rooms are very well-appointed, clean and comfortable, and the breakfasts are delicious.  The location is already excellent, in terms of being a bit closer to the main Festival Theatre than most of the other B&B's in Stratford, and it will be literally two minutes' walk away from the new Tom Patterson Theatre when it opens next year.  A terrific combo!

Delightful Summer Getaway

Our first stay in this B&B, three nights to attend plays at the Stratford Festival in July, 2019.  Our room with en suite bath was small, but well-appointed, with large windows, comfortable bed/pillows, wardrobe, reading lamps, ceiling fan, wooden floors, cozy area rug,comfortable armchair, architectural moldings and heavy draperies.  It was very quiet, despite facing one of Stratford's main streets and adjacent rooms being occupied. We are readers, so the lack of a television in the room was not of concern to us. Room and bath were both very clean and made up daily. Breakfast (8:30-10:00am) was generous, with a lovely selection of breads, preserves, fresh fruit, cereals, several choices of juice, coffee and tea, and a hot item--all delicious and served by our delightful hosts, Kim and Kevin.  Coffee, tea, and cold beverages were available 24/7 in a comfortable sunroom with a variety of sofas and chairs. There was fresh coffee on the upstairs landing early every morning, too. Guests can enjoy a lovely, shady garden from the comfort of adirondack chairs.  

The Old Rectory is, as advertised, within walking distance of Stratford's four theatres, and especially close to the stunning new Patterson Theatre, scheduled to open in spring, 2020. There were multiple restaurants and interesting shops within an easy stroll. We felt free to come and go at leisure with room keys that also opened the front door. 

We will happily stay at this B&B again when we visit Stratford.

Charming B&B, Delightful Hosts

Our five days at the Old Rectory will be our best memory of a wonderful trip. Kim and Kevin, our hosts, immediately made us feel as welcome as family; they were knowledgeable guides to the city and area, great advisors in matters cultural and culinary, and immediately responsive to any query or need.  The house itself is as fascinating as an oversized Victorian curio cabinet, with spacious, comfortable rooms. And to hear Kevin’s daily description of each elegant and delicious breakfast was as delightful as the breakfast itself. Easy walking distance from any point of interest and all theatres.  This, for us, will be the gold standard of  B&Bs.

The Very Best

My room was charming and I had a door out to a lovely porch in the treetops that overlooked the backyard.  My bed was comfortable and the bathroom was spotless.  Breakfast was all homemade — even the yogurt — and delicious and Kevin went out of his way to make a gluten-free muffin to accommodate my food allergy.  Both he and Kim are warm hosts, and if I could give them a 10 out of 5, I would.
