When we were there, the bald older male janitor kept going into the women's dorms unannounced.  When one woman confronted him, he got up in her face and threatened her.  The manager did nothing, and the woman left.  We left early because of this.   The staff is horrible and hiring a predator is not acceptable to me.   They should have removed the janitor, but instead the woman left.  God a bad impression of management and Canadians here.

I Stayed 1 night at the HI Victoria. It's well situated in a nice old buidlding from the oustide. 
Staff is very nice and helpful. 
The inside of the building is functional but old and could really enjoy some work. It was a bit cold, but I had the heater put on in the room when I asked.
Kitchen and bathroom were ok cleanwise.
No free parking, but a public parking accross the street with good rates.

I’ve stayed at several HI hostels and loved them.  This one definitely needs improving.  Carpet very dirty.  Seems to be in convenient location.  Staff was fine.  Didn’t stay for breakfast.  Beds were okay.  

Wouldn’t stay again

I booked Hi hostel Victoria but after reading the reviews I cancelled well in advance of incurring any cancellation charges. I then discovered I was charged as a no show. I called and the person asked if I had stayed there or not. I said no. She then told me to call back in 2 days to talk to the manager. When I indicated to her that this was not acceptable she put me on hold for an interminable length of time and said that the assistant manager approved the refund since it was their error. Duh. I have stayed in many hi hostels before but this one lacks competency and accuracy.

Watch out for your credit card

If you're not expecting something palatial then it's a totally fine place to stay, pretty regular hostel experience. 

The good - huge kitchen with a lot of cooking/prep space, really friendly and helpful staff, lots of common areas to hang out, talk, drink, read, play pool, etc, and the location is pretty hard to beat. Shin Ramyun in the vending machine is an outstanding touch. :) 

Not so good - The mattresses seem strangely short, I'm 186cm and my foot was pressed up against the divider all night. Had no power sockets anywhere near my bed so couldn't charge stuff overnight. It's also unusually warm throughout the hostel, even though it was 15C outside overnight with the window open, nobody in my dorm was using a blanket and I woke up often due to the heat. Need some airflow!

Overall not too bad!

The affordable HI hostel was ideally located is central Victoria. The beds were comfortable and spacious with plenty of storage and the washrooms were very clean. Staff were friendly and helped us book tickets for the BC museum. There was breakfast served in the morning which included coffee. Overall the hostel was perfect for a short, affordable stay in Victoria and would highly recommend.

Ideally located hostel

I stayed here two nights in early August of 2019 in Room E.  I came here via the BC Ferry Connection(bus from Vancouver via the ferry) both ways.  They provided a shuttle.  I had them take me to the Bedford Regency hotel which is very close to the hostel.

The hostel is located about 500 yards from the Fairmont Express hotel and the Visitor Center on the waterfront.  You go right from the entry of the hostel and go left at the first intersection.  About 50 yards or so away.  Walk along that waterfront and you will come to the Fairmont Express hotel, which I consider the apex tourist spot.

There is no major signage for the hostel in front of it.  You will spot the HI symbol at level or slightly lower.  The street in front is busy.

Once you enter the door you see the main reception directly in front of you.  You have to greet them with you name and Room number to get past the security door to the left of the desk.  They will get you a manual key for your room, which will require a $5 CAD deposit which you will get back upon departure.

Past the secure door, you come to the common/.dinning area.  You keep walking toward the back toward the kitchen to find the stairs to go up.  There is a vending machine next to the side of the stairs.

I stayed in a room with at least 3 double bunks bed.  There were large backpack size lockers for each bunk.  You will need your own padlock for your locker.

I had a top bunk.  All the bunks were made of heavy wood and very solid.  Mine was again the wall and very secure.

The room I was in had a bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower/tub.  There was a soap dispenser next to the sink.

There were few if any electrical outlets in the room or at least in my area.  The one nearest me were on the oppsite wall from my bunk.

The kitchen was first rate with refrigs, ktichen sinks, and cooking areas.  It was located all the way in the back of the hostel on the main floor.

There is a supermarket called the The Market Store located on Yates street.  It is about 1 Km or half a mile down Yates on the other side of the street.  Turn left from the hostel entrance.  It is located at 903 Yates St if I recall the address correctly.  It is very good supermarket.

There are lots of restaurants and bars in the area where the hostel is located.  There is a McDonalds not far from the hostel.

Wifi is good in the hostel.  There is a password you need to connect.

Overall, this was a well located hostel near the tourist attractions and in a lively party area.  There can be some loud music from nearby bar on ocassion.

I sould mention there larger rooms I noticed in the hostel with large number of bunk beds or military style.  Also communal showers and bathroom on the 2nd floor I was on.  Hence you could use the shower/toilet in that area.

Excellent location for good hostel

i made a booking with this hostel for that night and then attempted to cancel it. the hostel would not refund any of the $200 that the booking costed me. it does not state on the website where i booked it that they would not refund my money, essentially they scammed me. i called the hostel multiple times and explained the situation, however they were not understanding and did not attempt to mend the situation and instead just told me that it was their policy - be aware of this loophole when you are booking so they don't scam you of any money either.
