At the head of Waterton Lake, in the town of Waterton, sits the Prince of Wales Hotel, the tallest all-wood structure in Canada. The hotel retains much of its original character, right down to the costumed staff wearing kilts and tartans. 

True to its 1927 origins, the amenities don’t quite match today’s traveler’s expectations. No coffee in the rooms, hair dryers, or toiletries. However, the rooms are historic, and you do feel like you have been transported back in time.  AND the views are spectacular! The main lobby is open up to all five floors, with a glass wall all of the way up facing beautiful Waterton Lake.  

Just down the hill by a 10 minute hike is the township. Plenty of restaurants, boating, and nature.  Make sure to check out Cameron Falls at the far corner of the town, and if you’re feeling adventurous, take the hike form there all the way to Lake Cameron. 

Hilltop Historic Inn with Specitcular Views

We had a nice stay at a lake side room. The room is cozy with a small window looking out to the lake surrounding by the majestic mountain. Washroom and vanities  were newish and clean to my delight. 

The view of the hotel from the town is picture worthy.

It is a beautiful place of history ,  cool to see and experience.  But I do not feel it is worth the cost.   Been there for that, would not do it again.   Especially since one could come and experience it all without staying there

The Prince of Wales hotel is an interesting historical gem sitting with a spectacular view to the south in Waterton. The staff is warm and welcoming. The rooms need some TLC, including better lighting and seating arrangements. It's definitely historic and a one night stay is really all you need to experience that history.

Enjoy history for a night

Typical overpriced historic National Park hotel, but the location is fantastic with amazing views. Short ten-minute walk to the quaint town of Waterton with nice shops and restaurants. Easy drive to a couple of alpine lakes and nice hikes with lower crowds compared to the Banff area.  The only real negative was a persistent sewage smell that maintenance was not able to fix, so we threw some towels around the base of the toilet and blocked the shower drain which solved the problem. 

Pricey but Iconic and Great Location

Beautiful, historic hotel with breathtaking views. Rooms were clean and the staff were friendly. We were there on the last night before the hotel closed for the season so there were limited menu options and many of the beers and drinks were no longer available. But, we love staying in these historic hotels and it was still a wonderful experience.

The view of Waterton park from the hotel was amazing. The service and cleanliness was top notch. However the room I stayed in was cramped and noise from the surrounding rooms was audible. Fortunately there was a large fan in the room which we turned on to produce white noise during the night.  

Amazing view

We had a great visit. While the rooms are small by modern standards, the staff and the views were amazing. We had an excellent dinner in the dining room and casual food in the lounge. My one caution for visitors is that the elevator does not go to the 5th or 6th floors, so you may need bell staff to assist you getting to your room on those floors.

Great historic hotel

Wow!!  Just beautiful lobby with 3 story windows to view the fantastic mountains and lakes!  Just had drinks there and they were each perfect!  Great combination of alcohol and other flavors. Waiter was attentive but respected our privacy. GO THERE!!

Fantastic Drinks, View, Service!

Hotel closes on September 18 for the season so we couldn't stay there, but we lucky enough to have dinner.  What a restaurant!  What a meal!
This is an absolute must do if visiting Waterton. 

The food was exceptional and tge service perfect.
