Wonderful place! Our hosts went above and beyond to make us feel special. We arrived on a Monday which is typically a closed day for the pub/food. Matt promptly said “we’re feeding you! We have everything available on the menu. Colleen’s cooking is a treat and filled with local seafood.Love the music theme!

Above and beyond!!

I’ve had the experience of a few meals at the Groundswell as of late.  Each meal we tried was absolutely delicious.  We dined on the patio and it had the most relaxing atmosphere and beautiful views of the bay and yachts moored just within view.  It’s a young family owned pub and inn and the owners are very hands on and attentive acting as the servers, bartender and cook with a few employees to help out.  They really want you to have a great experience at their establishment and that is very evident from the moment you walk in.  What a gem of a business on our small island!  

Great food, relaxing atmosphere

Our room was lovely with water and land views, blackout curtains and a thoughtful minimalist aesthetic. Cozy bed and well-equipped bath — very clean throughout. 

We enjoyed dinner in the pub, a happening scene with good variety on the menu. The owners manage this property like the professionals they are. We loved our stay!

A friendly, happy place to stay

The food was excellent - we had the pan fried Haddock and the seafood linguine, large servings!  

A great selection of local craft beers, wine and spirits.  

Great atmosphere - good music and friendly people.  Our server Makayla had a great- bubbly personality and was very attentive.  Food and drinks were served with a smile!

Great night out

We love this place. Back again in 2022 and it keeps getting better. The haddock Currie is delish and they serve the best burger around. This is not a frozen food pub. Real food made with pride and served with friendliness. Back deck looks over the harbour in D’escousse and a talented local musician playing for entertainment on a Thursday night. This is a Cape Breton  gem.

Just keeps getting better! A real gem!

Due to some last minute changes in a family trip, I needed a place to stay and Matt and Colleen were able to accommodate me for a week. I needed to change rooms a few times (which was known to me at booking because of it being last minute). I stayed in The White Room, Paperback Writer, and Yellow Submarine. I enjoyed them all, The White Room was my personal favourite. Colleen is an amazing chef and the food is incredible. I highly recommend the bourbon maple bacon scallops! You couldn't ask for better hosts than Matt and Colleen. The Groundswell is a wonderful home away from home.

Excellent spot to stay in D'Escousse

Our family really enjoyed our frequent visits to the pub/restaurant. We didn’t expect that degree of hospitality in a small town.  Matt and his lovely wife have put together a beautiful oceanfront inn and restaurant. The restaurant faces their private beach. Matt’s wife is a great chef and makes everything from scratch, using fresh local ingredients, and the dishes taste amazing.
Matt has a hospitality background as well as a shiny  musical background. He is a super friendly and energetic guy, and connects with every single guest that steps foot in his establishment. He is well connected with various artists. Some are very well known Canadian musicians, who have visited Groundswell and played on the stage of his pub. We were there on a “quiet” night as Matt put it, and the pub was packed, and a band was playing on stage, and we were all singing and dancing. We weren’t able to stay at the inn since it was fully booked.

Dining and live music

The Groundswell is a beautiful place to stay. The owners were so very nice. The room was very nice and very clean and a beautiful view of the water from our window. Breakfast was delivered to our room and it was delicious. I would stay here again for sure. My only complaint, spiders. There were no spiders or any bugs in the room at all but outside the room on the deck and the roof that covers our room, there were many big big spiders. I had to walk under a lot of them to get in my room. It would be nice if this was taken care of before any guests arrive.

Great place to stay

Despite being life-long residents of Nova Scotia, we were really pleased to finally visit this area (Isle Madame) of our beautiful province. Reviews for the Groundswell were very positive so we booked two nights and we were thrilled, first, with the willingness of the owners, Matthew and Colleen Johnson, to keep in touch prior to our arrival to answer any questions about our room and address any culinary requirements that we had. Matthew also went out of his way to secure our bikes and offer suggestions about what to do while in the area. The residence has been a four-year renovation project for the Johnsons and the changes and modern amenities in this over-200 year old building are amazing. There are four Beatles-themed rooms upstairs (accessible only by stairs) and one on the bottom floor. That room, the restaurant/lounge and decks were completely accessible. Some of my wife’s family joined us the first evening for a terrific meal in the restaurant where the service and food selection were excellent. Our Strawberry Fields room featured good storage space, an excellent bed and a modern bathroom with a full tub/shower. Oh, and perhaps best of all, they serve breakfast in bed…well, not really IN bed, but they check with you the night before, settle on what they will cook for you, and then bright it up to your room at an agreed time. We loved it! So, do consider checking out their excellent website and making plans to visit this beautiful coastal part of Nova Scotia.

Groundswell Pub and Inn: The Difference is Obvious

My family of 4 enjoyed a delicious meal out on the patio last night. I highly recommend the blackened chicken fettuccine Alfredo! The nachos were also good. Burger was a bit dry and needed more sauce. The backyard to the venue was spacious and they allowed our children to play on the swing set. Very peaceful and relaxing, and they've done a nice job with recent renovations (makeover), will definitely return.
