Returning from a recent trip, I just needed a quick overnight and found all the airport hotels to have pretty high prices - so I decided to stay at the Assiniboine Gorden.  I had stayed here years ago and was pleasantly surprised this year.  The place has obviously been kept up quite well, it was clean and the room was well outfitted.
I got a full breakfast the following morning, included in the price, which was a nice surprise.
Late check in was no problem as they have 24 hour staffing.
Drawback - you cant pay for it ahead of time online, payment has to be made when checking in.
The location is in St James, fairly close to the airport, and on Portage Avenue.  They do not offer a shuttle service, unfortunately.  Taxi was not a lot of money.
The staff were very helpful the morning I left, when I had a 1 1/2 hour wait to get a taxi to pick me up.
I will be staying here again on future trips.

a good alternative to the airport hotels...

When my furnace quit working late on a cold winter evening, I needed a place to stay for the night, until it could be repaired.  I headed over to try this nearby neighbourhood establishment.  I chose a room in the motel, figuring it would be quieter than the hotel. I also chose a second floor room, as I felt safer than having an  entrance door onto the main street. It is an older building, and the room was smaller, but well maintained, very clean and comfortable. Queen bed, side chair, large desk and chair, TV, good sized fridge, free Wifi, complimentary water and coffee, and a coupon for breakfast.  The bed and pillows were comfy, there was good hot water in the shower, and Dove bath products. The building itself was very quiet, I didn’t hear a soul, and the street traffic didn’t disturb me. There was a private balcony, too cold to use, but I could open the door for some fresh air.  The room was quite warm overnight, and I didn’t see a way to turn down the heat from the radiator. Lots of free parking right in front. A very comfortable stay!

Comfy Stay

Stayed here (and reviewed it) 3 years ago.  Returned this time for the price (very good value for money) and location (near two parks which I expected to enjoy in the nice summer weather).  Everything was completely to my satisfaction.  The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast remarkably good.  As for location, Portage is a very busy thoroughfare, but in the room this just makes for "white noise" rather than anything disturbing.  Donald Park is immediately across the street, and Assiniboine about a 10-minute walk.  The drive to my son's place, who lives near downtown, took just 10 minutes as well.  The A/C in the room was set to the perfect comfort point for me.

A pleasant return

Let us start with this establishment is not a high end spa type hotel.  It is a basic place to eat and sleep and listen to a good live band.  Front desk personnel are very accommodating and helpful.  My room was large and very clean. This is an older hotel that has been refurbished.  Free parking that I could see easily from my window.  On site dining room that served all meals.  Very good wait staff in dining room as well as good, reasonably priced and varied food.  Although there is a lounge on site with gaming and live music, it could barely be heard from the room.  Great value for the money spent.  I will stay there again the next time I am in the area.  Do not let the exterior fool you.  I knew that the dining room food was going to be good because the adjacent  hotel parking lot was full of dining patrons at breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I personally spoke with the cleaning staff and was told that they take pride in their work.  It definitely showed in the cleanliness of my room.

Very Clean and Comfortable

An excellent location - 15 minutes by car from downtown, walking distance from two beautiful parks.  Comfortable, clean, well-appointed room, friendly and helpful staff, exceptional hot breakfast included.  Would recommend it without reservation, but . . . be aware that many of the rooms in the "hotel" part (as distinct from the "motel" part next door that others have referred to) are directly above a pub which is quite lively to start with, and also offers such things as karaoke and live bands (this was happening all three nights I was there).  This made for a very unhappy first night there (I'm an early-to-bed type, and like quiet anyway)!  For the remaining two nights, staff were able to move me to a room above the restaurant instead, and I was happy as a clam - the pub sound did not carry to that side.

had the “Special “ for breakfast - eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, shredded or cubed potatoes and jam or peanut butter... nice comfortable space and excellent price... easy walk to Assiniboine Park as well as Bruce Park just across the street... neighbourly...

Great Breakfast!

Lots of parking.We booked an economy room it’s in the main hotel.The room is small with a view of the roof.We found it warm,their is an air conditioner but you can’t control the temperature.Mattress is stained but the sheets are clean.No coffee maker,fridge or microwave but my room came with free breakfast.We stayed on a Friday night not realizing there’s a bar on the property so it was very loud until 3am. I have stayed in the unattached motel before and no noise.The room could use some attention.The walls are a bit dirty and so we’re the baseboards. I am a housekeeper so I notice little things.Check in was fast and the employee was nice

Budget Hotel

My first impression of the place was that they probably rented rooms by the hour. Outside there were people hanging out smoking and there was a prostitute soliciting for business, On the main floor where the lobby was located there was a pub with slot machines and very noisy. It turned out that the guest accommodation was in a separate building or room was at the back of the hotel and quiet as the front was on a main road, also yo have to walk to Germany to the nearest park,  Rey mislleading, the room was clean and the hot breakfast which was included consisted of 2 eggs, bacon, has browns toast and coffee.

The name and photos are misleading

Most of the times we've stayed here was good.  Unfortunately there were two times that people next door either had people coming and going all night long and slamming doors and arguing or just arguing.  Had to phone management twice and they didn't really get anything done about it.  The rooms are clean, you have convenience of microwave, fridge and tv and a good bathroom.  Beds are good too. Nothing lacking in the rooms. We like that we can park outside the door to carry things in, so that's very handy.  And if you don't have a vehicle, there is bus service right outside the building to take you downtown or to the west end.  Very convenient location.  Also must say their restaurant is great.  We get a free breakfast if we stay there and it's certainly worth it.  The waitresses are always cheerful and friendly.  The cook is good.  

Usually a good place at a lower price.

Recently, I rented a motel room for a one night stay. Renting the room required a $250 credit card deposit. For most of the evening, I was away from the motel, meeting up with old friends. I checked out early the next morning before sunrise.

The problem is, when I phoned the motel to see if my credit card deposit was returned, the general manager claimed that there was "damage to the outside of the door," and has refused to take any of my calls ( left several messages, and emailed). Considering I was away for most of the night, and there is a bar, and beer store on the motel premises, I requested to see surveillance footage, considering it was definitely not me that caused the damage.:So far, they have refused.

So in other words, a random stranger can come and bang on the doors, or damage them (the Motel was facing Portage Ave), and the guest will be forced to pay.

Motel refuses to return $250 deposit, will not respond to emails, calls.
