Rooms were clean and small. Art deco everywhere and a great common room with all you need to have a meal. They had cookies, fruit salad and mandarin oranges for snacks to grab at anytime you felt the need. Bar is downstairs so not far to go for a few drinks. The little store next door had all the stuff you needed for a little dinner or go to Nelson for a restaurant. Its not fancy but great for a place to rest your head. We will be back 

Great Unique Place

My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to stay near Nelson for two nights and found this hotel online. As we entered the hotel we were greeted by chill jazz music and we received a warm welcome from one of the employees who was more than happy to tell us about the history of the hotel and local points of interest. 

The hotel's contents is a mix of beautiful paintings, indigenous art and sculptures from around the world and random garage sale stuff, which was a feast for the eyes. There is art everywhere including the rooms! It wasn't the cleanest place I have stayed in but I wouldnt say it was dirty either,the bathrooms were well maintained. 

We had a nice chat with Hans the owner before we departed. The next time we are in the area we will be staying here again

Unique experience

There is nothing like a fancy hotel with perfect rooms. And this is nothing like that. The rooms are filled with art. And stuff to look at.  I wanted to explore the whole hotel and look at all the room because I knew there was so much to see. 
The floor were warped in a few spots. The bed I slept in had a 2×4 frame. Plaster was falling apart in a spot or two.  In other words.  Felt like home. Prices are super. I would definitely recommend this place.  But know that it is not traditional.  You can get a room with shared bathroom. Or a suite.  Cool experience 

Gramps house

I don't think you'll ever find another place like this. And you'll either love it or be put off. As others have noted - keep an open mind because in my opinion it's a real treasure.

I thought it was amazing but my wife was not so impressed. It's obviously an old building with a lot of eclectic art everywhere - including the rooms. As a result there are dirty corners here and there and it may not have the latest fixtures, etc.But if you can look past that, it has amazing collections of art from around the world plus as someone said, probably a few garage sales.I thought it was stunning. One of the locals said that Hans, the owner, had another warehouse building in Salmo stuffed with even more art from his travels. 

The rooms are reasonably priced. They aren't big but adequate. The bathroom was nice and clean. The bed was comfortable and I slept well - not bothered by the resident ghosts that supposedly inhabit the building. 

I would definitely go back.

A very unique experience

Cool place with sooo much stuff to look at. We had a couple drinks and talked to the bartender and the fella that owns the place, he’s an interesting guy with a ton of stories. Didn’t see the rooms and the restaurant is closed but it was worth a visit if you’re going by.

WOW! This was a fascinating 150 years OLD hotel. It was an experience alright! The art throughout this fabulous & so interesting old place was EVERYWHERE! all 3 floors and rooms were filled with all kinds of art collections! The cricking floors when walking on them or heating other guests walking was spooky but fun spooky as it showed it’s age. The owner Hans is an 87 year old gentleman, sweet as can be. His helper Jill was truly awesome and showed us around and to our spectacular super old headroom and bathroom. My hubby and I loved it all. We had a couple of beers in the bar and chatted with the old gentleman and Jill. What an evening. The bed was so comfortable. Recommend this experience to anyone with an opened mind and truly enjoy the stay. Great staff!!! Breakfast was super simple, packaged cookies & mandarins. Fresh good coffee. We did not eat dinner at the diner as we had dinner out. Have fun and do check this stunning/strange but awesome old heritage Ymir hotel from 1885! 👍🏻

Fall road trip

Interesting place.  In a small sleepy village filled with very nice folks.  Place is run by a 87 year old cantankerous German....but underneath I suspect he has a heart of gold. Place filled with a wide and wild variety of art.  Don't expect the ritz...but a genuine and interesting experience.  Had a decent meal in the restaurant, listened to a really good musician play some songs by request, and met some nice people.

Glad I stayed.  And I did not mind the shared bathrooms!

Be open minded and enjoy an eclectic experience

We arrived at just about closing, 9pm on a snowy Thursday, when all the staff was leaving. All the staff is the 80+ year old owner, the 30 something bar tender and the inebriated short order cook. Lucky we got there when we did as this is a one-of-a-kind gem.

We Entered the reception area, which is also the bar, dinning room and commissary, and were greeted by statues, dugout canoes, expensive paintings, 20-year old Good Housekeeping magazines, plastic gnomes and three buckets collecting the water leaking from the pipes in the ceiling.

We were just in time for last call at the bar, we ordered a couple of large beers, and pain the $Cad 49 for our room for the night.  The bar tender took us up  stairs that I don't think we ever found again, to the third floor to show us our room, where we found someone sleeping in our bed. The bartender went down some other secret stairs and we got a room with 3 beds, a TV from the 60's, tons of original paintings and what seemed to be an antique dresser topped with plastic toys from K-mart.  It was perfect.

The shared bathroom was clean and as far we could tell we were the only guests that needed a bathroom that night.  In the morning we left our keys in the drop box (the staff doesn't return till 3 in the afternoon) went out the front door and walked to the right for 20-yards to a wonderful cafe.

A mix of wildly expensive art and kitschy stuff from garage sales. Overall AWESOME

This is not the Banff Springs Hotel. I must say that the reviews I read before we were arrived were very accurate. If you are hiking or whatever in the area and want a simple, clean room, or if you are passing through and want an inexpensive over-night, the Hotel Ymir is just fine. A sense of humour and adventure help. It was fun to stay in a piece of history. We'd doit again.

Go with the right attitude and this is kinda fun..........

On a previous visit we had cold beer and good service. However, the old pub folks must've had an off-day. The washrooms were unclean and unsupplied of necessities. OK, we could overlook that, but being that we went in for cold refreshing pints of beer, we had to complain. The Kokanee drafts were sour and flat, and they were served in dirty mugs. We paid the $7, but did not drink our beers. Sorry Ymir Pub, maybe next time....
