Other more recent reviews suggest that it may no longer be a  hotel , so check first. However if it is , we had a very nice stay. We had to move out of another highly rated small hotel in a hutong as it was not as expected, and the staff here made our transfer and check in so much easier. The staff's english is limited but they make up for it with a genuine desire to help, that is much appreciated. The rooms are really lovely and memorable and the courtyard is great for children who want to explore! I would highly recommend this , then only problem to be aware of is it can be challenging to get taxis when you stay in the hutongs so you may have to walk a bit to get one to stop! otherwise I hope it is still a hotel as we  had a really great stay

Chaming Hutong Hotel

Very charming and well located hotel.  The staff was friendly and helpful, but the level of English varied widely.  The rooms open onto a lovely courtyard.  The property is centrally located, but the entrance is down a small side street (hutong)  so not every taxi driver was able to get us there.  Unless you speak Chinese and are able to give directions, this can be a pain.  In any case, be prepared to walk to the main street to catch a taxi.  However, there is a Metro stop about one block away.   Very comfortable bed.  The free wireless is a nice perk.  There are several restaurants, convenience grocery stores, and cafes near by.

Charming and Traditional

We loved this charming hotel with friendly, helpful staff who spoke English.  The location was great with lots to explore and a subway stop nearby.  Many taxis had a hard time finding it, so be sure to have the address written in Chinese and a map.  It was clean, comfortable and had plenty of amenitites.  There is an unpleasant odor at times, but we soon realized the entire area (and all of Beijing) has air quality issues and it is not the hotel per se.  If you are looking for a more authentic experience but still want it to meet Western standards, this is an excellent choice.

Wonderful traditional hutong hotel in the heart of the city!

We have just returned from 3 weeks travelling around China and I feel compelled to write a review to say how FANTASTIC this hotel is! We stayed in a standard double room for 2 nights at the end of our trip and chose it as we were looking for a courtyard style hotel with a bit of luxury and this fitted the bill exactly! 

The hotel has 8 rooms (i think!) and the service reflects this - v.personal, will do anything for you to make your stay in Beijing better and with good english. It Is just off one of the main streets only a 2 minute walk from the hotel to the subway - which means its easy to get around - although the location is pretty good in itself if you just want to walk to see things around the immediate area - even the forbidden city is within walking distance.As it is on it's own street and not the main road the hotel inside and within the courtyard area is very quiet - just what you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of this city.

We had a standard room with the most comfortable bed of all the hotels we stayed in!! The room was big with a large LCD TV, good quality furniture and really nice lighting. The bathroom was also a really good size with a powerful shower. At the time we were visiting, Beijing was experiencing it's 1st cold spell of the autumn - the room was really toasty with heating that could be individually controlled room to room and lovely after a long day's sighseeing. The hotel also has free wi-fi which came in handy when checking our return flight.

We opted to take breakfast one morning - which is taken as a buffet breakfast in the hotel opposite (similar style - but a lot bigger ?owned by same people?). Is was expensive by Chinese standards at 88 RMB each but the selection and service was fantastic - both chinese style breakfast and western - and we eat so much that we managed a full day of sighseeing without having to stop for food until 8pm in the evening.

On the 1st night we were left a lovely basket of fruit in the room we don't know if this was because of the note informing us that the water would be going off for 3 hours the following morning or is just standard - but we throughly enjoyed it!

On the evening prior to our departure the hotel booked us a taxi for the following morning with no service charge - and the taxi driver even rang when he was outside - so we didn't have to wait in the below freezing temperatures of a 5am Beijing morning.

Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone and can only think it is not higher rated on tripadvisor due to the small number of rooms and thus less people to write reviews!

Best Hotel we stayed in on our trip to China!!

Upon our arrival at Shijia House late May, we discovered it no longer serves as a hotel but is being converted in to a restaurant. Fortunately, the Red Wall Garden hotel (diagonally opposite, also on Shijia Hutong) took over our reservation without extra charge. Quiet, peaceful location in lovely neighborhood; great traditional (and affordable) Beijing restaurant nearby (look for the red lanterns at #13 Shijia Hutong). Room was quite large and spotless; very comfortable bed; large bathroom with big shower. Flatscreen TV unfortunately had no English-language news channels, which is being made up for by the 2 computers in the hall providing free internet access. Some minor maintenance needed in some areas. Airco in the room; no elevator; no pool. We skipped the expensive breakfast and Western-style restaurant. Underground station and bus stop nearby; easy to find taxis. Wangfujing shopping street within walking distance. Overall: highly recommended.

Shijia House closed; stayed at Red Wall Garden instead

We stayed for three nights in Shi Jia house on our trip to Beijing in July 2010.  While the concept of a courtyard hotel was good the actual experience was altogether different.  We had one of the delux rooms that faces the main courtyard.  Since the windows/door open directly into the courtyard there was no choice but to keep the heavy blinds closed the entire time, which makes the room really dark and airless.  The bathroom, although very chicly designed, was painted a deep cobalt blue, which made it hard to see.  I had to crack the curtains open every morning to put on makeup.  

There is a common problem in China in winter and summer when you have to rely on AC to control temperature: the air circulates within the room without any fresh air intake from outside.  This resulted in me waking up every morning with a huge headache, and also put me in a constant state of mild hypoxia our entire stay.

Another negative on the location is that although it's centrally located, most taxi drivers balk when they hear the "hu tong" in the address, and they refuse to drive into the narrow lane, so every night we had to be dropped off at the entrance of the lane and walk back.

In conclusion, even though we always favor little boutique hotels when we travel, next time we go to Beijing we're staying in a large hotel on a main road with windows that can open
