This was my first trip to China. I had met a female acquaintance on the internet, and through corresponding she agreed to pick me up at the Nanning Airport, and help me find a hotel.  She took me to the Jiao Yu Hotel. I would like to tell you exactly where this hotel is in Nanning, but the business card is in Chinese. LOL. BUT, I can tell you that it is within brief walking distance, and on the same side of the road as the Major Hospital in Nanning. Now, there are several hospitals, but this one is very close to the Chinese Numismatic (coins/currency) Museum. It's that same street. The hotel is about 16 or so floors, it is clean, and the rooms are relatively small, but not cramped. To my surprise, and delight, my female friend had connections at this place, so I was provided with a very reasonable rate, about 14 dollars a day. I believe the posted price was closer to 25 dollars per day and higher. Now frankly, I think the hotel is really only worth 14 dollars a day. I think I might pay the 25, but from what I could see, you could get a better hotel if you spend a little more money. So for me, this was really perfect. Single male on crazy trip half way around the globe and no idea what he is doing. My room had a TV which challenged me every time I picked up the remote. I could only locate one English speaking channel. As for the beds, my experience was in this hotel, and a "three star" hotel in Guilin. If these two beds are any indication, Chinese prefer concrete to lay down on, and not the mattresses we are familiar with here in the West. I swear, I am supposed to go back again in 2008, and I'm bringing my air bed. I'm serious, and if you have any hope of being comfortable at night, you'd better bring one as a precaution. These beds were like rock. I'm kind of fat, and that didn't help. Maybe if you're thin it won't bother you, but I mention it here so that you can't say you weren't warned before you visited. There were two beds in the room. They were singles or twins. The bathroom had western toilets. The shower was "OK", and mostly what was a hassle was that the shower had virtually no bottom track or lip to prevent water from meandering all over the rest of the bathroom floor. There was a curtain, but it didn't reach the ground. I couldn't figure out why they would build a shower that let water basically run all over the bathroom floor, but hey, I'm just visiting. Once the first shower was done, I learned my lesson. I had to take most of my towels and lay them down along the shower opening so that the water would soak to them, and not all over the bathroom floor. It worked ok. The internet says my hotel was some type of education hotel. The only thing that appeared educational to me about it was that it did appear to be at or near the entrance to a schooling plaza. Every afternoon Chinese kids would swarm out of the buildings behind this hotel. But, I didn't really see any students or similar folks as guests of the hotel. To me, most people staying there were overnight travelers, etc. (I was there for 10 days). Other than this, the staff was always very pleasant. The lobby very basic. There was no restaurant to really speak of there. There was a very small tea room where you could sample some teas. Since I was only at this hotel to sleep, it was really all I needed. So overall then, I'm not sure this hotel would suit most married couples looking for some basic western amenities. I think you should be looking more at the Nanning Hotel or the luxury Wharton type places. But, if you want to conserve money, and can do with the very basic nature of the amenities, then it's a bargain, but again, I'm warning you: bring an air mattress to use instead of the bed, just in case.
