Little worth praising except the service. 
1.10 meters from the main road. Too much traffic noise at night. Don't make a booking as long as the rooster living next door is alive, for it shrieks at 5 in the morning! 
2.Mediocre sanitary condition. Layer of dust on the windowsill. 
3.Poor design of bathtub and shower head. Wet floor after a quick shower. 
4.15 minutes by walk from the south gate. A lot of guesthouses available inside the town with less noise and better views. 
Not recommended.

Sadly disappointing

Loved this hotel - charming small Chinese character hotel, with large traditional feel room with large curtained off bathroom with stunning colourful ceramic basin. Wood bar closes the wooden doors. Unique delicious breakfast. Hotel is 15 minutes walk to Dali Old town. English speaking staff very helpful and assisted me with local bus services. This one was a gem. Make sure you get the phone number so staff can help you with directions to hotel.

Charming great value hotel with English speaking staff

I can't really agree with the other reviewers. It's true, there's some good things about this place but the lack of room heating  (I'm here in the winter) with only a small electric blanket to keep you warm is, in my opinion, unsatisfactory.  

The rooms are basic but functional and the bathroom does indeed have a good supply of hot water for the shower.   

However, it's location is only so so.  There are many of these types of guest houses in much better locations on the other side of the old town.  The only advantage is its proximity to the bus station - I'll be catching the bus to Kunming so this is handy. 

We planned to have breakfast this morning (15rmb) but were told it had to be booked the day before.  There are no signs announcing this.  

There is a Cockell that wakes you up around 8.30am - great if you're an early riser but not so good if you like to partake in Dali's famous nightlife.  

Speaking about nightlife; if you come back after 11pm you'll find the place closed up.  You then have to call a phone number and wake some man up who'll ask your room number before coming out to let you in.  I don't know how non-Chinese speakers will fare.  

The girl on the front desk is very nice and helpful.  She also can arrange for you to book the variety of tours Dali has. 

I suppose for me, I'm just not into guesthouses.  I much prefer hotels with central heating or AC and avoid the quirkiness of having to book breakfast the day before or wake some bloke up if I've enjoyed a few pints down the pub.  

That's why I'm not being harsh with my rating (4/5) as I think guesthouse types will like this place a lot but if you are more of a mod cons person and/or want to be nearer to the old town action, I recommend looking elsewhere.  



Good for the price

Ji Rui is a ten minute walk from the south gate of Old Town, Dali. It's a lovely courtyard house that looks authentically old but was actually built quite recently.   Best of all, you can get a bus going west to Lijiang or  Shangri-la from a bus station literally two blocks from the hotel, without returning to the main bus terminal in Xiaguan. 
 We were the only guests for three nights in October and had a double room on the third floor with a view of the mountains. The young girl at the desk who speaks limited but functional English suggested we take a public bus out of town to walk in the villages.  It was one of our favorite days in Yunnan. 
  We used the hotel washing machine (free) and the rooftop clothesline.  Breakfast was available for an extra charge. No shower curtain, but HOT water and the bathroom dried quickly with the fan on.  Theres a courtyard area where you are invited to hang out, but unfortunately there is audible road noise. There's also a rooster in the neighborhood who is very vocal before dawn; its a shame someone doesn't make chicken soup

In a town full of hotels, this one is a good choice

The location is just outside of the walled city. I think 5 minutes on foot. On our second day there was a local market going on on this stretch, which made the walk even more enjoyable and interesting. Anyway this location was away from the noise and crowds of the main shopping street. Better stay here or on the north side of the old town. This has the bonus of easy accessibility from the train station by taxi or bus.
We booked the suite room and it was amazing. Huge with wooden furniture and windows with a mountain view. Loved the bath tub.
The breakfast was a little too Chinese and the bikes they had were a bit too small for us but still convenient.
The woman that runs the hotel spoke perfect English, and was very friendly. She helped us arrange things and wrote Chinese notes for us to get things done.
I would stay here again when in Dali. Maybe they can get bigger bikes for westerners. Biking around Dali was a blast.
