Upon arrival the lounge was filled with other travellers and had a great energy. Really enjoyed hearing their stories. The bed was soft like a cloud and the pillows were thick and comfortable. Shower had plenty of hot water. This hostel is "shoes free" and was very clean. Even saw the lady on her hands and knees cleaning the floor. The hostel was "non-smoking" and we liked that. You can see the city wall from the windows. 
We stayed in a private bath room and the only problem we had was the sewer smell during the night. The room was quiet and we slept well. There is a Walmart about 15 minutes away from the room.
The best advice I can share is how to find this place. We heard people being charged between 20RMB and 50RMB for a taxi to this hostel. Skip the taxi and take Bus 15. Walk out of the train station and walk across the street towards the China Post Bank (Green Sign). The bus stop is right in front of you. For 2RMB the bus will drop you off in front of the hostel. It will take approx. 30 minute bus ride. Once you take a left, you will pass under a pedestrian walkway and then the Datong Hotel and Hotel Grand will be on your left. Get off at the bus at the next stop and you will be in front of the building. Walk left and turn right at the auto gate. Walk into the second entrance and you will see Fly by Knight on the board. Wish we had been given this information before arriving. Skip the cab and take the bus.

Really Enjoyed Our Stay.

Room was perfectly clean, location is very good with a superb view over the city.  Free internet and pc and printer...  family athmosphere.  

Wash bassins and wc should be cleaned more often and better. 

Other than that is this place perfect !

Very niuce and helpfull lady.

You get a squeaky-clean room with a fluffy bed, on the 22nd floor, with huge windows - what's not to love? The view of the skyline is just glorious. The common area is probably the best I've had at any hostel/B&B, with a kitchenette, computer, printer, fridge etc. Awesome laid-back atmosphere that will instantly make you feel at home. The guys working there are my favorite. Great people, first and foremost, and great hosts on top of that, always willing to help.
The only thing that puzzled me was the transparent wall between the room and the en suite bathroom... this made one of us always leave the room when the other went to toilet. For this reason, I recommend getting a room with a shared bathroom (and this is the first time I ever say this, as I despise sharing bathrooms, but they are so clean and nice looking that even I would have 0 problems).

Loved this place

The place is clean and comfortable...we just had a couple of issues...first we have booked a twin room and a double was delivered and second they arranged a driver for us which was very annoying...not just tried to sell us 100 times tours outside the city when we told him we were not interested but also on our way to the train station picked up 2 more people and we had to put our suitcases on our laps...disappointing

I stayed at this hostel about two weeks ago and had a great stay. I was in Datong for 2 nights. The hostel is a little hard to find, but I simply called the hostel, and they gave me very clear directions on how to get here and arrived in a few minutes. It's on the 22nd floor of an apartment building, and it has great views of the city. The interior is clean and open, with large windows all around and tables, sofas and a well stocked kitchen to use.  The staff are very helpful and professional, and their English is very good. They gave very good directions to both the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple. However, since there are only 2 staff members, sometimes they would both leave to go shopping and leave no one to attend the counter, so I was not impressed with that. The beds are very soft by Chinese standards, and there was an electric outlet by each bed, so maybe they should hire more staff. I would also like to point out that there is not much to eat around here. The restaurants that are located in the mall are not very good, and other than that, the only alternatives are a McDonald's, KFC, and a Mr. Lee's fast food Chinese restaurant (not recommended..). There is one dumpling restaurant and one noodle restaurant, which I found to be mediocre. However, for the price you pay, I think this hostel is a great bargain. So, overall, I think think this is one of the best hostels in Datong, but your dining options will be limited.
