Note that 海口海德堡酒店 is known in English as the Heideber Hotel, as posted at the hotel entrance.

I visited Haikou on my Great Hop Forward Southern Tour in search of craft beer. I chose the Heideber Hotel because of its price and proximity to the brewpubs and taprooms that I wanted to visit. I booked a Courtyard Single Room for two nights without breakfast through Trip.com. Despite indicating that I preferred a non-smoking room, this wasn’t one. This hotel probably doesn’t have any.

The slow train from Zhanjiang arrived at the Haikou Train Station late, so instead of taking an hour-long bus ride for ¥5, I opted for a 30-minute taxi trip for ¥60 so that I wouldn’t get behind schedule. I had no issues with the taxi and it deposited me directly  in front of the hotel. I told the front desk staff in Mandarin that I was checking in. She asked me if I understood Chinese. She seemed relieved when I told her I could understand some. So, a warning for those of you who don’t speak any Chinese, your check-in may not be as smooth as mine.

The room was spacious with a business-style decor, but had an outdated and dull look to it. There was a queen bed, two side tables, a built-in desk and chair in front of the window, a flatscreen television, and an air conditioner. The bathroom was spacious with an ample supply of linens, however, the pedestal sink leaked from the rear of the faucet which pooled water in front of the shower door. Complimentary water was not provided, so I had to leave the hotel to purchase some. Fortunately, there’s an upmarket Leshun supermarket within a short walk from the hotel that has a good selection of local packaged food items that make good souvenirs.

Despite the minor annoyances of the leaking sink and lack of complimentary bottled water, I found the Heideber Hotel sufficiently comfortable and met my needs within my budget. While I would consider staying here again in similar circumstances, I would look at other options within the neighbourhood first.
