after our first day in hangzhou we moved to this smaller hotel. this is a nice little place. the rooms are great and clean. take the sunny room for good views. the breakfast was simple sandwitch. the staff was very amicable. we stayed here for 3 nights. our guide told us that this was youth hostel before. The rooms now redocareted in european style. The hotel is close to the childrens park.. which is ok.. not that great and the hangzhou zoo. but the family and me got to see some beautiful scenary from treks around the place. ask the staff for directions they will be more than happy to help. Also they helped us out with our tickets to shenzhen.

good boutique hotel

Its a fresh breathe of air! Its nicely tucked away from the busy town, but still fairly well located near to sightseeing spots. The décor itself is very European, but very tastefully done. There is only one restaurant however, but food was very good. Wifi available and staff very helpful in helping you with anything you need. I would definitely stay here again!

Very pleasant stay!

This hotel has got all the hardware to make it a great european style BnB, but it's lacking some experience and details for it. There is no fridge in the room, which makes stocking own beer/wine or breakfast not possible. Because of it's remote location (no shops near by) you have to take their breakfast which is the same every day - and consist of very simple 1 egg 1 bacon on toast. Rooms are not very noise proof but overall the interior of the room is beautiful and nice. Rooms itself is brilliant and couldn't complain much.  Location is not far those remote enough that you need a taxi to practically go anywhere in the summer heat and no shops near by. Taxi is hard to get because of it's location and it's always a traffic jam to get to the hotel from the city. Overall not a bad hotel and certainly some rooms of improvement

Good hotel, but lacking the lots of details and not so convenient location

We chose this hotel based on the hotel's reviews.  However, we were very disappointed with the hotel.  The room is very spacious but for the rate we paid per night, you think it should include breakfast.  The floors in the room were not mopped as we could see the dried dirt markings on the floor.  This is probably the only hotel we know that do not refresh the bathroom's free shower gel or shower cap when the housekeeper comes into the room to tidy up.  Also they do not vacuum the floor as the dead fly I killed was still on the floor. There is no fridge in the room to keep anything cold.  There was a wine cooler fridge which does not work below 20 degrees. 

The hotel do cater some sort of breakfast however they do not serve breakfast from 7.00 am onwards like most hotels do.  It has to be a late breakfast - too bad if you want to have an early start.

The staff are friendly - however some of them are hopeless.  They have no idea - its a bit like watching Fawlty Towers when you watched them running around trying to get information etc. We never try the restaurant on site however, the restaurant next door seemed to be popular and reasonably priced.  I would not recommend to stay in this boutique hotel.

Overrated and expensive

This was my second stay at Shenanbei in Hangzhou - the first was a work-related trip, and I liked it so much I stayed here again on a personal weekend getaway from Shanghai with my boyfriend. 

The owners designed this place to have a boutique, french/european style with stand-alone bathtubs in the bedroom area and nice individualized finishes for each room such as bare wooden beams. 

The mountain-view rooms are great, with beautiful scenic views of the green hills - definitely worth the little bit extra price if you're coming to escape the concrete jungle of Shanghai.  If you're on a budget though, you can also get cheaper rooms that don't have a view, but are still very decent.  Since this place is in the hills, it's a bit out of the way from city centre, which was a good thing for us especially since Hangzhou traffic can be terrible. The front desk will call you a cab if you need (give at least 15min for the cab to arrive), and it's about a 10 to 15min drive to downtown.  

The restaurant in the hotel is apparently a local gem too - one of the best Italian restaurants in town.  They make brick-oven pizzas and some pretty decent pastas too.  You can eat out on the deck, which is perfect for a nice relaxing dinner.   

Make sure you say hi to the owner, Manoj, who is an extremely friendly guy and really makes you feel welcome/like you're staying at a friend's house.  

If you're looking for other places to eat around there, the Green Tea restaurant is a 5min cab away and is a beautiful local place to eat - right on a pond, with hills in the background, surrounded by tea plants.  It's also right next to the tea museum which is pretty interesting if you're into that kind of thing.  

All-in-all, if you're looking for a weekend getaway, this is the place to make your base camp.  It's about half the cost of a 5-star chain hotel, and has a much better atmosphere/surrounding environment.  My boyfriend used to hate Hangzhou because every time he came for work, he would stay in the city centre - the traffic congestion drove him nuts.  This time, after taking him to stay at Shenanbei for the weekend, he has a renewed perspective of Hangzhou, and actually said he would want to come back again.  

One more thing, since I did stay here for work once but didn't leave a review - this place also has good wi-fi connection if you need it.
