We came there, hoping to spend our 31st of December.
When we arrive, the hostel was empty, we were given a room a the top floor.
The decoration was suspicious (Disney curtains and kids cartoon pillow). There was a gate at the small window and a small note "Dont let you window open due to burglar". So if thieves are ready to risk their live on a roof at 30m high to break into a low budget hostel, we were a bit worried.
The bathroom was not very clean. It was very cold in the room and the heater did not work properly. Instead of fighting against the cold on our 31st, we decided to get to a more expensive hotel...
We found out later a very nice international hostel practically on the lake, and very busy!

Much better hostels

We ended up at the Spring Flower hostel on a Sat. night when everywhere else was full. The location is not too bad. There is a busstop 5 min. down the road, but with Hangzhou traffic on weekends it would have been best to just walk to the lake and back. With the hostel itsself we had a mixed experience. Of our two rooms one was ok, but the other one had cockroaches. The owner was nice enough to let us move to a different room, but seemed completely desinterested in the cockroaches. Also, there's no cafe although it says so in the name. There was free WiFi in the lobby and the owner was quite helpful with information regarding bike hire etc..

OK Hostel

I stayed in the Spring Flower Hostel for a few nights in the first week of May 2011. The location is good, about 15 minute walk from the West Lake, easy access to bus stops but the hostel itself is quite hard to find. Best to ring Peter (the owner) to wait outside. The place is more of a guesthouse than a lobby; small living room area, no outside seating, so some visitors may feel a bit claustrophobic. Definitely not a party hostel, there is a curfew in action as the owners hold the keys to the rooms. 

There are a few hostels in that area, of particular note is Four Eyes Hostel which I personally would have preferred (more energy for less money). But if you're just looking for a place to crash after exploring Hangzhou, Spring Flower might be the place for you.
