The hostel has a good location if you plan to visit both Longjing and West lake. It's well connected by bus to both places and also to different bus/train stations.
The atmosphere in the main lobby is very amicable and staff is very helpful. 
I booked single room via bookng.com and got a room under the staircase - humid and cold with light heating system.

The location of this hostel is far from the Hangzhou Railway Station (approx. 30 mins horrendous taxi ride, Hangzhou taxi drivers are mad drivers!) Nothing to eat around that area except a tiny eating place outside the hostel (where there's no patron all day).  Otherwise have to go further down the road to a sort of 'local happening place' which is no big deal at all! Just couple of restaurants and some old groceries shop.  Other option is to go to town area for food.  West Lake is about 20 mins walking.  The room has some kind of 'old rusty smell', no soap, no towel (unless you buy from the front desk) but they do provide you with a tiny mini toilet roll.  The room lighting is very dim and because it's next to the main road, you'll hear the vehicle horn sound all day long because those crazy Hangzhou's drivers love to horn to the point they irritates the hell out of you! As for the staff, I've asked them some questions (i.e. night market area and recommend some Hangzhou dishes) and they don't seem to have an answer for it.  For that kind of room rate, don't expect much.

The hostel can be hard to find if coming in from the train station, you need to get a bus and will be lucky to find the right stop. Luckily we met a Canadian lady on the bus that helped.

The staff in the hostel are really great, especially a camp guy whose name I cannot remember. He was amazing fun. Do not order to food, it is not good. I dont think they have a chef and the front desk people do it. Room was actually pretty good for a hostel, cosy and with a heater. When we were there they had 5 puppies which was amazing, to come back from prancing around and see those cuties made our stay. 

Across the road from this hostel, we had some of the best food on our whole trip in a tiny, tiny local restaurant run by a family. They had blue plastic stalls and zero fanciness but honestly it was the best. 

Get the little boats on the lake, they're so cute and fun.

Staff are great, rooms are cool. Location not great.

We stayed here a long time ago but promised to write them a review. Harry (not sure if he still works there) went completely out of his way to make sure our stay was perfect. He even helped us book our train tickets to Shanghai as we thought we might not make it back to work in Beijing in time.

In this lush wooded slightly scattered village #4 bus (zoo stop) out south from the lake there are two hostels which as a non-Chinese one may feel things more cosmopolitan. One is Tour'an; t'other is Daisy. Don't get me wrong, I have nae probs being the only non-Chinese in camp (plenty fun anyway, despite some language barrier); just nice once in a while that some stray weirdo from wherever else crumples through the saloon doors.
Dorms are pretty good, en suite with sit-down loo. Some friendly staff. Ice-cold wee cans of Tsingdao for Y5, a huge hippyesque sitting area with huge drums: very relaxed, with a nice patio out front. Menu is limited; food mediocre at best. 
There's a very spaced out fluffy white dog called Sunny (for Hangzhou's weather, must be ironic). If you're freaked out by stuffed animals that suddenly start to appear alive waiting patiently at your table when you're eating: this is Sunny.
Now this place shows movies, but is prudish, nothing too dicey, and 9 pm is getting on for bedtime. And they play Xmas muzak in June. Although on first appearance it feels quite bohemian, there's something more like broomstick up the bahookie on further acquaintance.
If you want real character, go round to Daisy wi the Twa Dugs and the black squirrel hopping along the bar, musical requests, no parentally controlled films, kitchen open past 11 pm (ok, I do feel, although the cuisine is generally very good, it's a tad overpriced - a need to say this for honesty). Dorms a bit more basic, but excellently priced, and yer man is going to upgrade the mattresses - not next week though. But the weather's muggy: you dont need a quilt - thicken the mattress by putting it under instead of over.
So, is this a review of Tour'an or Daisy? It's a considered comparison. Currently Tour'an is rated #3 in Hangzhou; Daisy #17. It's easy to compare. Stay at one. Walk two minutes round the corner to the other. Stay there too if you feel you prefer the vibes.
I'm not slagging off Tour'an - enough positives, good people-meeting spot. You could do plenty worse. Yet... You know where my doggy heart is.
