Stayed here at the end of July for two nights, it was nice but I wouldn't suggest any longer for your stay. The hostel itself was in an ideal location inside the walls, it was equipped with wifi, a tv, comfy couches and a cute courtyard. It was very 'authentically' Chinese and the staff were all helpful and generally friendly. The dorms were the most basic that we have stayed in during the trip to China and there wasn't actually an option to hire bikes (which was disappointing because beforehand we had read you could on the website and that was a large part of our plan there). The showers weren't exactly luxurious but if you're backpacking, it's still acceptable. If you're visiting Pingyao, I would recommend this place. 

Pretty basic, but no problems 

We stayed in a private kang ('double' bed room - bed stretches length of wall) for 2 nights.

Pros:
- The building is very cool, and very different to any other hostel I've stayed in. Loved the look of the place and the style of bed
- Excellent location, allows you to properly explore Pingyao
- Cheap beer - had a most excellent people-watching/Tsingtao swilling time in the window seats of the hostel
- Reasonably fast, reliable free wifi

Cons:
- Staff basically ignore you until they absolutely have to speak to you - not the most welcoming vibe 
- Noisey 
- Bed is reaaaaally hard (my partner likes a really hard mattress and even he found it uncomfortable)
- Bathrooms are tiny & smell... interesting
- Rooms are very, very dusty

Very cool looking building...

Initially taken aback by the bed spanning a room and that would have to support three of us, we really enjoyed this hostel. The building itself is historic and quite a site, is in a decent location, the showers were hot, the wifi fast, the breakfast and dinner good and affordable, and most importantly the staff were friendly and helpful.

We emailed them the night before to pick us up from our overnight train due at 5am. They answered immediately and the taxi, complimentary, was there no problem.

Only issue with this place was the toilet drain smelled fairy bad.



Great bed

This hostel is not luxurious (budget) but it has everything you'd need (clean room, bed, showers, and free wifi). Note that the showers are downstairs. The location is perfect if you are looking to stay in the ancient city and near the hustle and bustle. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. They offer free pickup so make sure to coordinate with the hotel to take advantage. 

Budget hostel in heart of old city

With Yamen hostel you definitely get what you pay for. The location was amazing, the courtyard was really cool, and staff were friendly. The issue with the hostel was the building itself and the beds. The building is extremely old and a bit run down, the toilets/showers could definitely use a bit of a refurb and the bed mattresses were as hard as a board. Having said all that, it was less than half the price of any other hostel in Pingyao and felt very safe so we would happily stay there again.
