This property is better known as The Hyde Courtyard Hotel but still passes as the Zhongshuyuan Inn. It's in a great location, just a stone's throw from the city wall's South Gate and the tip of South Street. It's a beautiful looking property, with magnificent, historic rooms surrounding a cobbled courtyard.

However, once inside the rooms, they are very basic. Some sparse, old-style Chinese furniture (2 chairs and a small table) plus a very large and ornate lacquered cabinet, features in the standard rooms. The bed is a vast platform with a comfortable (but thin) mattress and elaborate duvets. It could probably sleep four, but easily sleeps two. The floor is stone, as is the bathroom, which is very very basic indeed. The water pressure is weak in the shower. They provide sachets of shampoo, toothbrushes and one tiny bar of soap that wouldn't even wash a Barbie Doll, let alone last a human for 1 day.

The room I was in was in bad shape. Water damage and mold has all but destroyed one of the walls, directly below the air conditioing. The room smelled very musty as a result, but the aircon does work fine. There's a TV, but it only shows about 14 or so Chinese language stations and the reception was very fuzzy.The wi-fi is free and very reliable. Unusually so for China, although of course, Google, Fakebook, Twitter & Instagram are all blocked (not by the hotel). There's a kettle in the room, but no tea or coffee and no free water. Bottles are provided at a cost.

All over the walls are squashed mosquito's, where previous guests have clearly had the same problem I had. The hotel leaves the room doors open when they're not occupied and there are no nets or gauze on the doors anyway. Plus the bathroom is open to the outside for drainage, so it's a hotel heaven for mozzies. I spent a lot of the night fighting them off.It made for 3 miserable sleepless nights.

The noise from the courtyard is a bit loud as families and other guests seem oblivious that anyone else might be staying, let alone sleeping. Children in particular seem to run amok in the courtyard in the early hours.

The hotel staff are very nice and friendly and do all they can to help, but they demand a CNY200 deposit in cash when you check in, even if you have prepaid, as I had done. They won't accept credit cards. They need to rethink this. The staff kindly wrote out places I needed to go in Chinese and ordered taxis. The taxi issue is a bit problematic in that they cannot drive close to the property, so you have to take a tuk-tuk and transfer to the taxi outside the city wall. There's walking involved no matter what you do. Again, this is not unique to this property. There are many no go areas for cars & vehicles in the walled city.

I didn't try the restaurant at all, but other guests said it was good food.vI got a good rate on expedia and it was a fine stay.With a bit of spit & polish, this could be a really dazzling property.
