I guess you get what you pay for. This was cheap but scruffy. The room needed some basic redecoration and the mattress was the thinnest ever at about 3cm thick. Breakfast was just terrible and its the only time I have not eaten something I paid for.

Tired room

We came in on a late high speed train (10pm ish) to the new train station. This station is quite small and lots of drivers waiting to take you to your destination. It is a ways out of town. When we made the reservation at this hotel I notice that the hotel requested to call them before you arrive so they know when to expect you. Well I had no good way of contacting the hotel as I had data / email and there was no social media info to contact them via. As i found out later... the hotel can make arrangements to pick you up at the train station at a discount price. Well I had no good way to contact the hotel so we took a taxi. 

Once at the hotel, I introduced June the owner to Whatsapp. If you have internet access in China and you use Whatsapp you can now contact June (who speaks english)

June will also make arrangements to take you to the train station. (I would not walk as it is not that close) 

My regular review; 
- AC / Heat - Did not use I so I don't know 
- Wifi was strong and speed was good 
- Hot water in the shower - soso 
- T-Mobile service - only E data and voice service 
- Plenty of Power plugs to charge phones 
- Towels were soft and in good condition 
- Sheets were clean 
- Bed was comfortable (thin mattress on a brick mantel) Really cool 
- Room decor appropriate for hotel 
- Room was clean and cleaned every day 
- Parking - None as no cars are allowed in the city 
- Breakfast - None for Free but you can order some 
- Pool - None 
- Noise - quiet - had no complaints 
- The food in the restaurant was great. In fact we kept coming back. 
- June speaks english. What a plus :-) 

A little extra 
Massage place next door was great and very reasonable. No need to stay more than one or two days in this town as you can see almost everything in one day. 

Some general advice for China travelers. Rent a hot spot at the airport. You will have high speed internet on all your devices and no messing around with SIM cards that may not work in every city if you are not careful (just saying from my personal experience) 

I would definitely stay here again.

Great Hotel and Service in an Amazing City

My wife and I had an excellent experience at this courtyard hotel. The staff was more helpful than at a 5-star hotel. We didn't ask, but they offered to drive us to the railway station after our stay. My wife asked where to buy some fabric in town (they did't know) but the next day the hotel had got some delivered for us. The lady running the front desk spoke decent English and the restaurant food was better than the average meal in the old town. We stayed in a small double room in the back courtyard. At this price-point we didn't expect anything to be new. The room was a little worn but clean and quite and we liked the canopy bed and kitschy decor. We would definitely stay again.

For the money, an excellent experience.

Our first impression wasn't great, as when we arrived only one of the younger girls was there, and even though we we had our backpacks with us and tried to give her our passports, she acted like she didn't understand that we wanted to check in. Even if she spoke no English, it should have been obvious. Finally she went outside and found the older lady who was very nice and spoke enough English to check us in and explain that our room will be ready around 10 or 11am. It was only around 7am, so perfectly understandable. 

We had a king size bed, it was almost wider than it was tall, but this is where the luxury ended. The bed took up most of the space in the room, and we never unpacked, but kept everything in our backpacks, which we sat on the two chairs in the room. The sink smelled, so we kept the bathroom door closed. The bathroom itself was very tired and not very pleasant. The water pressure was very weak, but we had water all day, even if it was lukewarm at times. They made the bed and gave us new toiletries every day, but didn't empty the trash, or clean. The door was quite low, and had a tall treshold, so my husband hit his head a couple of times, as there was also a straw mat hanging in the door, which you had to hold with one hand. The room was locked with a padlock, and we often saw the set of master keys sitting on a ledge in the courtyard, so the security wasn't great, although it felt completely safe, especially that our room was in a back courtyard, away from the street.

The location was great, although there are no bad locations if you stay within the city walls. We walked to and from the train station, which was maybe a 30 min walk. The food was excellent, and we ate there three times, I think, during our two night stay, in addition to the breakfasts that were included. Intrestingly, at breakfast, you just sit down and they bring you the food: a big bowl of congee and condiments like fried potatoes or pickled vegetables to put in it, plus hard boiled eggs and plain steamed buns. So no menu or buffet, but that was fine, the food was great, traditional Chinese breakfast.

Tiny tired room, great food

Pleasant, traditional courtyard hotel within the city walls.  Centrally-located on City God Temple Street (main side-road), within easy walking distance of all Old Town attractions and gates.  Management will arrange pick-up and drop-off at the train station by electric cart, but confirm your likely arrival time, as they didn't check their emails and we paid for our own "taxi" from the station (20 yuan, 10 mins).  Upon arrival, at 6:45 AM, they let us into our room, and allowed a late check-out (2pm, usual is 12pm) and luggage storage upon departure (late train).  Limited, but serviceable English spoken by the friendly staff, who will work to meet your requests, even if it sometimes takes a while for communication to happen.  Family room was clean and spacious, with three beds: a traditional, canopied double, and two "old-style" twins.  Beds were Chinese-standard hard, but comfortable.  Apparently, "old-style" just means faux brick bases, but no real other differences.  Free wifi available in the room, and standard state TV with an English-language news channel.  Bathroom was open style, but schedule your use, as the hotel loses water during the day (11 AM - 4 PM) - including the toilets (we had a water bucket brought in for emergencies).  The courtyard is pleasant, but the highlight of this budget mid-range is the food: the included western breakfasts were forgettable, but the local food was the best we had in the city: we scheduled to eat there twice!  Vegetarian options available for those that need them.  All-in-all, a decent budget place for a short stay, but definitely not luxurious.  Paid CNY 260 for 1 night in a family room on Booking.com.
