This is the kind of hotel that feels like it was built in the 1970's but for a grand and wealthy clientele. 

My experience may be unobjective as the hotel had lost track of my booking, had no regular rooms left, but then very kindly upgraded me to a suite. It was of massive proportions, as large as a decent sized flat in NYC or London. This was in the second building, over the road from the main building where breakfast is served.

Breakfast actually was the main downer - don't bother, the food is very average, much better food to be had 5 mins away in the market area of town.

There were a couple of staff we found who spoke English, but generally they were very keen to help, polite, great service in fact.

Wifi was excellent, some of the best we had in China.

Location is excellent - 5 mins walk from the market area which is a fun place to eat at in the evenings. Tonnes of restaurants with outdoor seating, and a main tourist drag but with musicians and street performers and all sorts going on. 15 mins walk away is the river, literally follow the main road straight until you get to it; a decent place to take a stroll and get away from it all.

Old school (but fun) hotel experience

The location is amazing and the hotel over all is very nice.  The beds though are REALLY hard, beds are normally hard in China, but they seem exceptionally so here.

The staff help out as much as they can, although no one here speaks any English at all - not really expected for where you are to be honest.

Breakfast here is really, really awful by western standards.  It's a Chinese breakfast, not sure how it rates that way - but I certainly don't like my orange juice served hot.  Restaurant actually serves really nice food for lunch and if you are in a big group they will do a really good value banquet deal.

Hard beds! Even for China!

When we entered the lobby of the hotel we were quite impressed and thought we had made a good choice, supported by some nice staff at reception who clearly tried to make an effort. However, this is where the positive impressions stopped. On the way to the lift there was a strange smell and clear evidence of lack of thorough cleaning. Our room was very small and smelled of a mixture of cigarette smoke and other unhygienic odours, from which even the nicely decorated Teddy bear on the bed could not distract. The bathroom was run down and clearly sub standard. 
Lucky we stayed only one night and then moved just 500 m down the road to another hotel of the same category, which made us even more aware of how bad Dunhuang Hotel really was. The new place had everything you expect: ambience, friendly staff, good and clean room and well maintained bathroom. The room price included even breakfast and was still 25% cheaper than Dunhuang Hotel without breakfast.


Very disappointing

Cigarette smoke has permeated the very soul of this hotel. No matter what is said in the description, this hotel does not have any non-smoking rooms. A "non-smoking" room has the ashtray removed and the window opened. The carpet, bed linens, towels, furniture etc. all smell like smoke. Even our clothes smelled like cigarettes the next day. The location is great. The old architecture is very cool.

The rock hard bed is not. I considered sleeping on the carpet instead of the bed, but the smell was too strong and housekeeping had not vacuumed it in quite some time. Plenty of hair from other guests stuck to our socks and was visible on the floor.

The staff are super friendly, but friendliess cannot overcome the condition of the hotel.

This is a Great Hotel For Smokers

Hotel is at a convenient and accessible location. the decorations on the ground floor is pretty with a wall of statuettes of the aspara dancers the rooms are fairly basic but clean. We struggled a little with the communications at the front desk.
