Booked through Booking.com in advance: As a family of 4 we stayed  in 3 different rooms. The rooms were all damp, but myself and son were in a tiny room we nicknamed 'the hovel'. It was dirty, dingy and very damp, room 103, avoid like the plague. Peaceful rooftop terrace, pleasant during the day, noisy at night due to parties in the neighbouring restaurant.

Lost Garden is the perfect place for a little getaway. The rooms are lovely and comfortable and the service is exceptional. The location is a short stroll from many of Kunming’s sites, bars and restaurants. 

The rooftop terrace is the best spot to while away the hours for brunch, lunch or dinner over a few cocktails or wines. Even when the weather isn’t so good the rooftop is a lovely place to spend your time.

Beautiful City Escape

We actually returned to this Guest house as we finished our tour of Yunnan because we felt we could not do better in terms of location, comfort and most importantly food. I was delighted to see a vegetarian burger option with lots of vegan choices on the menu, a good wine menu  and for breakfast,  delicious homemade muesli with seasonal fruit and Yunnan coffee which is just perfect! There are lots of lovely green  terraces to have tea and relax, the fabulous Green Lake Park is just across the road and the owners are exceptionally warm, friendly and welcoming.  It's budget accomodation with everything you could possibly want!

although the room is quite small, it is very cozy for a reasonable price. also the location is great; only minutes of walking to the green lake park, the most pleasant place in the city, especially early morning or late afternoon.

After spending more than two weeks on a fancy package tour throughout China with its high end hotels emphasizing comfort and luxury, it was a bit of a disappointment coming back down to the "budget" end of the accommodation spectrum for our final stop in Kunming. However, I must say that this modest hotel more than makes up for its "basic" room environment with spectacularly great service from its attentive and most helpful staff. The fluent English speaking management (not always found even at the high-end hotels) went out of their way to provide a variety of services that enhanced our stay in Kunming - arranging an airport pick-up at 1 am, briefing us in detail on many Kunming sites, transport options, local eateries, etc., doing our laundry at a very reasonable cost, even accompanying us to a nearby restaurant to provide translation services to help us order an excellent meal. In addition, we learned more about real "life" in China from our discussions with staff members here than we gleaned during the extensive time spent on the package tour for the prior 16 days. And the room, while a bit dark and cramped, turned out to be quite comfortable - it must be added that the hotel is undergoing some renovation in an adjoining building, so that may have contributed to our initial negative impression. And it's location, while hidden away on a back alley, is actually in the heart of the city near the amazingly beautiful Green Park. And there is an old fashioned 5-star hotel right around the corner for those who need to get their fix of luxury (just by walking through it of course).

Here is my review on Lost Garden Guesthouse: - 

This guesthouse earn a very high review and I should give thumb up to the guesthouse as well. The room is nice and clean and the shared bathroom is clean and nice too. But the only downside is the location deep inside the alley and it is quite difficult to find during the night.

Hotel Environment: Guesthouse is located deep inside the alley and it is no way to locate from the main street. Train station is quite far away but can be reach within walking distance around 20 minutes toward the south to Wuyi Road train station. There are some local cuisine restaurants along the Green Lake road within 10 minutes walking distance. Location can bring down the reviews but looking at the guesthouse I don’t mind the walk. There are 2 attractions near the guesthouse which can be consider for those have extra additional time e.g. Green Lake Garden and Yuantong Buddhist temple.

Hotel Service & Staff: Staff is great and all of them speak good English. There are only breakfast served and there are no lunch or dinner which is another downside of the guesthouse. I reach the guesthouse around 11pm+ and the staff waited me for the check in.

Room comfort: Room and shared toilet is clean and nice. The stay is perfect at Kunming.

The best guesthouse after Tibet tour but it is little difficult to find during the night hiding in the alley at Kunming

We stayed here several times as we toured around Yunnan Province.  The hostel/ guesthouse provides basic but clean accommodation at a very good price.  We had a double room with shower and toilet.  Rooms are small but there is a comfy bed and fan. Good WiFi.  There is a nice roof terrace to sit and relax.  The hostel is in a good central location - visiting Green park, especially at weekends is great fun!  Hostel is signposted just off the main road, so not too hard to find.  They have a laundry service.  Breakfast is limited choice, but substantial and western.  They don’t serve evening meal, but we went several times to their sister restaurant, Humdinger, using the discount voucher provided by hostel, and food there was good.  Staff at the hostel are friendly and speak good English.  It’s not luxury accommodation, but perfect for the price.

Good value basic accommodation

We spent only one night at Lost Garden Guesthouse.  The location is great, walking distance to Green Lake.  For our short stay in Kunming, it was exactly what we needed, just a room to crash after a long night and then be able to take an early morning stroll the next morning.  What makes Lost Garden really good, though, was that we had a delayed flight and couldn't make our connection.  We had to change our reservation to delay one night last minute.  The staff was easy to work with over the phone for the last minute change.  

The guesthouse is tucked away in a quiet residential area.  The accommodation itself is not much to speak of.  The rooms are very basic; however, the building itself with winding and sometimes hidden stairs is quaint.  Given the right expectation (i.e. it's not a luxury hotel), the location, staff, and value, makes this a good option to stay in when visiting Kunming.

Great place to stay 

A bit difficult to find, a friendly place with charm and character. Goord breakfast, The room we had was L shapped and therefore not very practical and a bit cramped, otherwise very qiet and comfortable with a nice terrace on the roof.
