Location was good, just a few steps from Dongfeng East Metro station exit F. There is a convenient stall next door and some small takeaway eateries on the next lane.
Staff were fine. Room size is adequate, wifi works well. The toilet‘s door were see-through glass panel type. So take this into consideration if you wish to stay with a friend.

Fine for non-fussy short stay.

Great location. Well that's the good points. The hotel is old and tired. Everywhere stinks of cigarette smoke. The reception has a large “non smoking” sign which is totally ignored.
Rooms are clean though the sheets and towels should be upgraded to ones without tears and stains. Some of the staff are a little bit interested in providing good service but would not help with taxis. Breakfast was mediocre and quite tasteless. But the location is great - so handy to the central city.

Budget and Needs Improvement

I stayed 2 nights on the 7th level. Hotel has lift. Location is great, in the heart of city centre. Next to the hotel is a convenience store. 

Staff is friendly and helpful with my enquiries on places to visit and transportation. Room is comfortable, King sized bed, with clean bed and towels. Basic amenities are available - air con, toiletries, hot shower, TV, slippers, tea, hair dryer. I took the buffet breakfast for 2 mornings. Typical Chinese food, value for money as price is 15rmb.

What I didn’t like is the shower partition is using opaque glass. There is only one sliding door for shower and toilet, ie either one can be closed at any one time. 

Overall, a value for money to stay in Kunming.

Transportation tips:
1. To hotel - easily accessible by subway, about 100m from the Dongfeng Square station, exit F.

2. To airport - Take express shuttle, fare 25rmb, journey 40mins. Getting to express bus stop - From hotel, walk south towards main junction, turn left and walk along Renmin Dong Lu. Bus is located at parking lot, just before the overhead bridge, directly opposite Holiday Inn.

3. To Kunming East Bus Station (eg going to Shilin Stone Forest) - take bus 237 along Renmin Dong Lu to the final stop. Fare is 2rmb, journey about 30mins.
To Railway Station (eg intercity) and the South Bus Station (eg going to Yuanyang) - take subway 1.

4. To Railway Station (eg intercity) and the South Bus Station (eg going to Yuanyang) - take subway 1.

Happy with the hotel

Lets start with cons: 
1) The check in process was tedious as the counter staff could not say even a single word of English. We were handed a room card to a room that did not exist & that added to confusion when we could not locate it. 
2) Once we were in the room, we found it to be extremely run down and musty. In another hotel, we would have asked for a change of the room but did not want the hassle here. 
3) There was no tourist literature in English - be it something as simple as overlay of tourist destinations with the map of city.  
4) The WIFI connectivity was poor and there are no dining options nearby. 

Pros: 
1) The hotel is near metro - do bear in mind that the metro no longer connects to airport and has limited connectivity to tourist destinations. 
2) The city center is 15-20 minutes walk away from the hotel and can be reached by taxi fairly easily. 

For 170 Yuan a night with no complimentary breakfast or drinks, I would have expected more.

Welcome to china

This hotel has a good location, but it's a really bad hotel. The room was dirty and smelly. Stains all over the carpet and on the walls. Smells cigarrettes on the hallway, the elevator and the room. The service on the counter did not speak english at all, but made efforts to make a more fluid communication through their cellphone. I stayed one night and I left. At night you could here everything when somebody talked next room. Please stay away.
