Short review: This hotel is run by very a young, inexperienced group of boys who do not know how to manage a business. DO NOT BOOK. 

Long review: When you are looking through the reviews for this place, it is important to pay attention to the date written. We are pretty sure management has changed around 2014. We stayed for four nights, unfortunately. 

The current management does not keep the hotel maintained or cleaned properly nor do they seem to understand the responsibilities keeping to a contract created by their online advertisement.  

1. The first room we went into was not the room we booked. It was corrected by room #2 after we brought up the mistake.

2. Room 2’s sink was completely blocked and so we moved to room #3.

3. Now room #3 had many issues but we were tired of moving. 
    a. Room 3’s floor was SO filthy (but we didn’t want to change rooms again) that we wiped it down ourselves with a towel (you’re welcome, horrible staff). See picture. Now I am not a clean freak by any means, and if I think a floor is dirty, it really hasn’t been cleaned for about a year. Then they continued to dirty the floor each day somehow. Every day when we came back it was once again filthy, and I once again wiped it down. 

    b. I did not have to do this on the final night because the cleaning staff completely forgot to come. Now the manager (?) Dongdong claims it’s because they cannot just enter rooms without permission. But we did not hang the do not disturb sign, and they didn’t have a problem coming in the day before without the cleaning sign up. This was particularly annoying because Dongdong continuously made up excuses for their mistakes rather than apologizing. 
    
    c. Seven of the lightbulbs in our room were out. See picture.
   
    d. We killed a lot of mosquitos in our room. 

    e. We didn’t like being on the first floor because it forced us to keep our curtains pulled at all times unless we wanted others to be able to see in. Now since most of our lightbulbs were burnt out, this meant that the room was perpetually dark. If we did not pull the curtains we had a beautiful view of all of their cleaning supplies (see picture). 
    
    f. The shower drain was clogged, and the shower head was broken (see picture). While I showered for maybe five minutes, the entire (fairly large) bathroom was flooded by the end. They mildly fixed this (while simultaneously making the floor filthy again by not bothering to take off their shoes and SMOKING in our room), but the crack in the tile still allowed the shower to flood. At some point this was probably a pretty nice bathroom, but complete ignorance on how to care for pipes and tiling has led it to become disgusting. See picture of the amount of dirt that came out of the bathtub faucet and the broken tiles and the pubic hair that is not mine found in the tub. There would be many more pictures of the grime, but luckily for you the tile is mostly grey and black and so it is not able to be captured successfully. 
  
   g. Wifi was unstable and inaccessible in parts of the room. 

Further overall problems with the guest house include: 

Our agoda booking says that it includes breakfast, and this was one of the reasons we chose this guest house over another. But this was not true, they don’t have breakfast unless you include the tea the strange mob-like high school managers who hang out while smoking constantly in the “rest area” drink. We feel that this violated the contract that was set up by our online booking and will be making a complaint. 

The agoda listing also has really bizarre amenities listed like a casino and coffeeshop and meeting facilities. Again, not true. They have listed that they have airport transportation, but 1. it is not free and 2. we did not trust them to arrange this. Finally, they have listed 24 hour desk service. We had to wake them up multiple times to just get out the front door in the morning. Both times were at 7:00am and they were very slow and not polite about getting up to unlock the gate. Furthermore, this seems like a huge safety hazard. Without their key for the lock, there was no way we could get out. 

Finally, interaction with these guys was really strange. They asked if my 30 year old asian partner was my mother (I am white in my late 20’s). They kept on trying to sell us on this 280 RMB Lashi Sea package that every other travel agency is selling for 80-120. But they wouldn’t provide concrete details or booking documents. They made us sit through a fairly endless tea ritual when we checked in. And on the third night one of them started playing the saxophone at 10:30pm when we wanted to go to bed. 

Essentially all these guys did was sit in the lobby smoking and drinking tea. We didn’t trust them at all. It made us extremely uncomfortable, and we slept with a chair against the door. There was no chain lock. 

By the second day, they took a nasty attitude with us because we made some reasonable requests like clean towels. Dongdong outwardly sighed whenever he saw us. Now if I were the one complaining, this would be reasonable because I would not have been nice about it, but I stayed away and let my partner very politely discuss any problems with them. I took all my frustration out here. 

At this point you are probably wondering why we didn’t just switch hotels. Well, we clearly wanted to, but we didn’t trust these guys to refund our money. They have violated other parts of the agoda contract, why would they bother to refund for the nights we didn’t stay? And I honestly don’t think they have the intelligence or integrity to provide a refund. 

If you are still here, I recommend finding a hotel that is on the outskirts of the old town so you don’t have to lug your suitcase over the cobblestones. My partner’s suitcase wheel broke off over the cobblestones. Check 大眾點評 if you read Chinese, because the trip advisor rankings only have so much for this part of China. Hopefully this will improve, but for now other platforms can be helpful. 

While many people do recommend going there and then booking, we didn’t want to do that because of the restrictions on guest houses/hotels foreigners can stay in while in China. The accommodation must be able to register you with the police when you arrive. 

PS. Here’s my final theory, someone gave this kid (who is probably 18) DongDong a hotel for fun. DongDong then thought it would be a great idea to hire all of his friends. So now he and all of his friends sit around smoking, drinking tea, and doing as little work as humanly possible in this hotel.
