This hotel suited my needs perfectly, but it wouldn't be the right choice for everyone. The room was spacious and quiet, there was a very friendly English speaking receptionist in the lobby, and it's a short walk to museums, restaurants, coffee shops etc. However, it's also an older hotel catering to mostly Chinese tourists, so the beds are quite firm and there are lots of peculiar features and little quirks to figure out (like the free breakfast is another building about a block away on the other side of the street). 

The carpets were old and there were stains on the wall, but the bed and the shower were clean...not luxury, but not "dirty" compared to other places I've stayed in Asia. 

A few other random tips: The aforementioned breakfast is very Chinese, and not that great. Local specialties are cheap and plentiful in the area, so I'd go with that next time. Also, the nearby "Laputa Cafe" is a nice place to escape the crowds of walking street and recharge your batteries over a cappuccino or a Belgian beer. Several friendly cats are on premises. It's located next to the hotel entrance facing away from walking street.

Older Chinese tourist hotel in a very convenient location

This hotel had the dirtiest room I have ever stayed at. Carpets not vacuumed and stained beyond all belief. Bathroom unbelievably poorly cleaned. Toilet keeps running. When I told housekeeping (who were chatting in there room) they said, "It's an old hotel." Wifi won't work and no one could help me log on. Desk staff had zero English and were abrupt and unhelpful. Really. Avoid this place.

Dirty!! Avoid this place

The room was overly large but normal for china ha. It was very comfortable and heat worked great! The hot water also worked well, breakfast was really great if you like Chinese buffet breakfast! Location was definitely the best feature about this hotel! Can’t beat the Confucius temple square in Nanjing! Really beautiful to walk around though it’s a tad far from the metro. The staff was actually very friendly and had enough English could probably assist someone with no Chinese- but Chinese helps here. Wi-Fi was pretty pretty spotty in the second floor rooms.

Great location!

The Egret hotel is in a fantastic location, only a short walk from the amazing Confucius Temple, many great restaurants, shops and markets. At night the lanterns light up the street for a beautiful atmosphere. The reception staff were friendly, and spoke enough English for a smooth check in and out. The room was fairly clean, although rather dated. The only real negative was the extremely firm mattresses.

Fantastic location!

We spent a night here, to rest and take a bus the following day. Our room wasn't so comfortable, furnitures are old, they give a feeling of dirty. But service was very good, they helped us for all the information we need. They speak a basic english.
