I absolutely adored the Desti Youth Park. It has friendly staff and even friendlier Golden Retrievers to greet you. The room style has a rustic charm and the cafe is adorably quaint as well. They have a little auditorium and they were playing My Neighbor Totoro on a projector when I arrived. They were also very wonderful helping get to nearby attractions. All in all a great stay.

A charming stay.

The youth hotel has got dorm, twin and double rooms available. It's about 5-6km away from town and therefore it's very quiet and relaxing. However, it's very easy to make friends there as the hotel organises games, barbecue and activities in the evening. The cafe and common area are very spacious. The rooms are equipped with heater at night therefore it's very comfortable. 

The hostel serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, you need to order breakfast at the cafe, egg roll is nice. Lunch and dinner need to be pre-ordered, otherwise they might not have enough for you.

Great Place To Make Friends

Is one of the best stay that you can interact with the staff ther and they are friendly to tell you the information you need. If you are going with a group is even best you guys can do star gazing together and chilled. The cafe you should try their egg rolls. 

Best stay ever

Stayed here in the first week of October.  Was very pleasantly surprised by the excellent facilities (especially the free wi-fi, the Western-style toilets and the shower facilities - lots of hot water!) and the wonderful way the new rooms and facilities had been incorporated into the old Tibetan house while preserving the best of the traditional Tibetan architecture.  Cleanliness was top-notch, too. 

I stayed in a 4-bed dorm on the 3rd floor.  Each bed had its own reading light and power point for charging phones, etc.  The mattress, pillow and duvet were first-class & extremely comfortable - in my opinion, as good as in the Westin and other five-star hotel chains - and, together with the peacefulness of the hostel's surroundings, made for a good night's sleep.  The lockers in the room were decent sized.  The portable heater in the room came in handy when the weather turned a little colder during the night.

I liked the many places to sit and read or chat with others, such as the cafe, the cafe terrace, the 3rd floor balcony and the amphitheatre seats in the skylight-covered courtyard (which has a big screen for showing movies).  Great view of the surrounding countryside from the 3rd floor balcony.    

The cafe is a cosy space in the former living room of the house, with all the traditional architectural features preserved.  It serves hot drinks (including coffee!) and snacks, as well as beer and other alcoholic drinks, so it was a great place to hang out and talk with other travellers.  I met a Chilean guest who said that he had originally planned to stay only 1 or 2 nights, but after the first day extended his stay to a week!

We had a hotpot dinner in the cafe and we all thoroughly enjoyed it, including our first taste of yak meat.  I was informed that as far as possible, the food comes from the surrounding area, which is a good way of supporting the local economy.

Service in the hostel was generally good, and David (from the front desk) was particularly helpful, especially when one of us fell ill just before we checked out.  The hostel's beautiful and friendly golden retriever, Lemon, was a great ambassador for the hostel too!

The hostel also has a pool table and a table football set, and provides free hot and cold drinking water from bottled water dispensers.

The front desk staff said that the hostel can arrange various activities, including evenings where the guests can interact with the Tibetan villagers in their homes.  We did not take part in this, as our stay here was for a short break from a community service project which involved staying in a village house.  However, I would recommend trying this out, as it would be a good way to get an insight into Tibetan culture and to meet the local villagers.

I would definitely stay here again if I visit Shangri-la in future, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable base to explore Shangri-la from.
