Changshu Kaiyue International Hotel is a normal business hotel- front desk people are pleasant and try to help.  Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. and has plenty of options, the room is clean, and hotel people have responded to requests as needed.

This Hotel was booked for me on a recent business trip to Changshu because of its convenient location close to the factory I was visiting. Whilst it presents OK on first impressions, after spending three nights in this place I couldn’t wait to leave for a number of reasons;
•	The bed was rock hard, I presume equivalent to the traditional “kang” heated brick beds from China’s past. On my final night I had to resort to taking the doona out of its cover and putting it under the bottom sheet so that I could get some sleep.
•	Cigarette smoke is everywhere, in the dining rooms, in the lift, nowhere was smoke free.
•	The complimentary breakfast was almost entirely Chinese fare, with some token bacon and toast included for western palates. This might have been acceptable if there was enough food to go around, however most of the food seemed to run out fairly early (by 8.30am) and was not replaced. Even cutlery and crockery supplies were not topped up with clean replacements after use, so when asking the staff for a coffee cup, I was given a small fruit juice glass instead, and ended up using a knife to stir in the sugar because there were no spoons (of any variety) left.
•	Even the relative simple task of checking out was a drama, and for some inexplicable reason took over half an hour, even with the assistance of our Chinese speaking colleagues. 
It seems from my recent experience in travelling through various regions of China, that the concept of “customer service” is rare except in 5 star Hotels where Western operators have trained their staff in the basic etiquette’s afforded to guests. This Hotel’s reception staff could certainly do with some of that training.

Sleepless Nights

The hotel is located in the Southeast Development Zone in Changshu. Although the name suggests a four-star hotel with an international flair, unfortunately this is not the case. The staff speak only very poorly or not even English. The hotel serves mainly Chinese or Japanese food. The breakfast buffet selection is manageable. The rooms are spacious. The facilities have come in years and a renovation of the rooms could not hurt. The cleanliness in the rooms and the hotel is ok, but could be better.
