The White Birch was exactly as expected. Not up to the standard of other hostels in China but not bad in reality.  Yes it was a little dirty and dingy.  The staff were friendly enough for me and the wifi worked okay.  It is in a good location for passing through Urumqi, with great street food and a huge park in the same street.  Take your own towel and toiletries, as well as some shower shoes and you'll be fine.

It's fine here

The hostel is well located in the city very near a Carrefour supermarket. The place is slightly dirty, with mold growing on the ceiling in the shower. The staff was not the most helpful nor polite when approached with directions and simple tourist information. I would probably not stay here again.

Average Chinese Hostel

This hostel was ok, I would probably stay here again but nothing to rave home about.

Pros: 

- staff: very helpful, organised my Kanas trip, helped with tourist info and transport options; info on Kazakh visas

- baggage storage

- laundry is cheap

- wifi is pretty consistent

- common area is actually fantastic, quite homey and sociable.

Cons:

- the main con for me was the stench of urine on the whole second floor. Even my room smelled like a bathroom

- the air con was a bit average and not powerful enough for the heat

- location is not so great for Urumqi sightseeing (not that its very exciting), but certainly good enough when using Urumqi as a transit point. The surrounding area has a bank, post office, supermarket etc.

- as we were paying for a twin room I was very disappointed at no towels or toilet paper, particularly when arriving very late at night. The hostel doesn't even have any for purchase which is just pathetic in my opinion. 

Overall, it's definitely good enough - but if you're planning a few days for Urumqi sightseeing I think there are better hostels available.

Ok...

This hostel is filthy, by far the dirtiest place we have stayed in during our five months traveling. They have cleaners who do a very slap dash cleaning job everyday, and I was so tempted to start cleaning the place myself I was so disgusted. The smell of urine and cigarette smoke infiltrates the corridors... mmm yum! 

On the upside, I thought the staff were pretty nice, mostly helpful and quite cool really. The common area has a bit of atmosphere and it can be a good place to meet people late at night over a beer.

Everything about this hostel was truly aweful. Our room was grotty and had not been cleaned, the sheets were stained, the bathroom stank and had no toilet paper, their was dog poo in the corridors, the reception smelt of faeces and the staff were that wonderful mix of lazy, arrogant and rude. The doors to the hostel are locked until the staff can be bothered to wake up, which in our case was 9.45am. Do yourself a favour and stay anywhere else.
