Situated in and around the old German Embassy, the Conch Hotel is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main food street area on Gulangyu. The colonial architecture while certainly revamped, still holds an element of history and beauty. My girlfriend and I chose a loft room, which was not huge but really cool! You get a free CD of classical music to enjoy and there is a selection of CD's in the dining area to borrow. Unfortunately our CD player was temperamental, but it worked enough to enjoy some piano concertos and such to add to the mood of the island! The staff were very helpful, the breakfast not amazing, but worth getting up for (a fair selection of 'western' and Chinese breakfast food) there's also a kind of piano lecture/seminar on Friday and Saturday nights. We had a relaxing stay and enjoyed the surroundings very much.

Beautiful and peaceful, cool buildings and location.

Conch is a very nice place to stay. The hotel is the colonial type with a beautiful garden. The location is shopping area, food, museums and beaches. But the breakfast was limited choice no refilled. We were served with a sausage ( which is cut  into 4 halves and it's cold), 1 hard boiled egg, small buns (which can be refilled), porridge, bread, cereals and cupcakes that is hard like rock. Beverage will be cold milk, tea and orange juice. Not really satisfied at this point. The worst part is electricity cut from 0900 hr till 2200 hr. We have to check out early. I think it's not fair, we should be compensated. Fortunately, we booked for 1 night only. Overall, it's a good hotel and I hope that they will also learn to converse in English. Don't expect only Chinese but also foreigners that can't speak your language.

Good and Lovely hotel

Conch is a nice property with beautiful garden. I stayed 1 night at the loft. I like the room mainly because of the window. You can looking at the sky while lying in bed or soaking in the bath tub. At night, you can see the Swiss hotel right opposite if you look out from the window above the bed.

The loft is located at 3rd floor,no evalator. Will be a bit inconvenient if you hate climbing staircases. The room size and amenities are average, compared to the rate they have charged. I paid RMB900 for the room. The breakfast was limited choice and not refilled. 

The location is not far from the shopping street, quite a good location. However, it is quite far if you are from NeiChuAo jetty and there is no sufficient instruction for you if you are from that jetty.

Little gem in GuLangYu island

Pros 

- location. Close to the main food street area, museums and beaches
- breakfast was actually ok. Chinese options, with bread, chips and sausages. 
- peaceful courtyard setting and fantastic atmosphere 

Cons

- we stayed in a loft suite. It was not much of a suite due to the small size.
- the room had serious mold issues. The bathroom had a lot on the blind and ceiling, whilst the bedroom has it on the roof and around the a/c unit. In Europe this would be unacceptable. It was mentioned during checkout and the girl just laughed. I know the attitude to mold is different in China, but there should be an understanding the other way that westerners view it differently and this should be considered. If we were staying for longer than 1 night we would have complained further and found a new room or, failing that, new hotel 

Probably a good hotel of this type....

Unexpected super small rooms with no space for 2 luggages. Poor maintenance in the room while wallpaper are pilling off with dirty toilet. Unhelpful staffs with no quality services. Free cheap breakfast that you would rather eat out in the restaurants nearby. Overpriced for what it is.
