The hotel was transformed from an old house, which, in my opinion, should be considered an attraction per se. Each room is paired with a famous painter, with 1 or 2 paintings from the painter it's paired to. There is QR code about the painter that you can scan to access further infos about him/her. 

The hotel provides simple local-style breakfast at a reasonable price;it also provides several cocktails at night, but I haven't tried their lunch. 

Gulangyu island is too commercialized in a way. Stores and crowds eclipse the beauty of some historic architectures. I wouldn't recommend you guys to travel here from June to August since the island would be too crowded.

Serenity

We stayed with 2 families in June. The hotel is a boutique hotel (like most on Gulanyu Island) that is part of a chain with several locations. Rooms are large enough and clean --we stayed on the 2nd floor because some other travelers had complained that the 1st floor was damp. Rooms are decorated in the style of impressionist painters, we had Monet and Degas. These rooms are on the side of the building which is a bit more quiet and away from the main street (Fuxing Lu): there is no traffic but tourist groups come by especially in the weekend. Because you have to walk from the Ferry to the hotels, it is nice that the hotel is not too far (it took us about 20 minutes with 2 large suitcases) and while uphill at the end the grade is not too steep. The directions on the hotel website are excellent. The location is close to several touristic attractions on the island (museums, park, statue, viewpoints), but nothing is very far. Good restaurants abound.

The hotel has a nice courtyard outside (tourists come to take pictures) and a little coffee shop where they serve excellent coffee. A simple Chinese breakfast is served, with some porridge, pancakes, boiled egg, corn, pickles. All in all we enjoyed staying in this quaint memorable place a lot.
