Free collection from the airport. 
 Lovely staff, friendly and helpful. Room was large, clean with very comfortable beds. 
Breakfast was a perfect start to the day. 
Highly recommended. 
We found the hotel to be the perfect, gentle introduction to wonderful Costa Rica 

Welcome to Costa Rica :)

After a long flight all we wanted was to quickly get settled and rested. The Melrost Shuttle picked us up from the San Jose Airport and 5 min later we were at the Melrost Bed and Breakfast, (BTW it’s Melrost not Melrose). If you desire  Costa Rican experience (not a Hilton Hotel with pool and hair salon) then I recommend Melrost. 
     Breakfast is included and it is a simple serving of  fruit,  eggs and toast with coffee or juice, served just outside your room on the covered deck (photo). You choose what time you want to have breakfast. We found it very pleasant to eat on the patio in the morning.  Some will choose to eat early and if your window vents are open, which they usually are, you will hear others from inside your room who choose to eat breakfast earlier. 
    We have stayed in 3 different rooms. We booked the main floor when we had a lot of luggage and the upper floor when traveling lighter. I personally like the upper floor. The setting of the Melrost is a pleasant area amidst a bustling urban Costa Rican town.  The view from the patios are of vines and green trees (we watched hummingbirds during breakfast) that are not panoramic but instill a sense of being in a greenway despite the urban surroundings. The rooms we had were clean and quaint with tile and stuccoed walls with fans on the ceiling. The walls will not insulate you from noise from noisy neighbors and occasionally you will hear dogs barking or cars driving but the private area keeps the urban sounds down and traffic is very light. Basic amenities are provided but you should bring your own kleenex and extra hangars if you need lots. 
     I am a big fan of supporting local businesses, especially family operated ones. You will meet the family members behind the desk and they are very kind and helpful. If you get a chance ask them how the name of Melrost came to be. If you need the trappings of urban shopping, City Mall is a 5 min walk and has everything you need from a large Mall. 
   Melrost is a place that is close to the heart, is charming and clean, without the nuances or price of other  hotels. The setting like a oasis in a busy neighborhood, and the value is unbeatable.

Great Value, Authentic, Family owned, Shuttle, and Breakfast. We love this place, and stay every time we fly.

Stayed here for one as a last minute booking. Pick up was friendly, efficient and courteous. 
Check on was super swift which is always appreciated when you’re stepping off a long haul flight. 
The room? Very basic and in desperate need of improvement. Bedroom doors are very flimsy, probably only as good as your bedroom door in your house.  Towels and bedding has seen better days too
Sleep was disrupted with multiple doors banging, people checking in and out, and residents laughing and drinking to the early hours. 
Location: it’s in a dark Back street. The nearest place for food is a around the corner in a large shopping mall ( basically nothing of quality is served) 
Had a transfer to the airport the following morning and was pleasantly surprised to receive a small packed breakfast. 
Was it good value? I guess so
Would I stay again? Only if there was nothing available locally.

Was adequate

The host was very accommodating.  The breakfast was good. Location is great and we felt safe.  The issue we had was that the bed in our room was so hard that both of couldn't sleep and were sore the next day. The owner offered to change our room, but  we couldn't risk another night like that before traveling for 9 hours the next day. 

Wasn't ready for a true Costa Rican experience 

This place is on a side street so should be very quiet.  It is really quite a nice place. The Staff are helpful, thoughtful, making sure we had a bag of breakfast food for our early departure; they provided the shuttle.  The down side was the terribly noisy dogs during the night.  The echo of the barking kept us up most of the night. That spoiled what would otherwise have been a very nice place.

Arrived after 11 but shuttle still picked myself and other customers up.  Location is just 5 minutes from airport.  Checked in at midnight.  Room was as expected, basic but clean.  Shuttle driver was very professional and polite.  Did not get to try the breakfast, as I had to leave at 530am to catch another flight.  Same shuttle driver showed up at 515am, still with a smile on his face.  My only complaint is lack of hot water in the morning for a shower.  My room had air conditioning (not sure if they all do) which made for a good few hours of sleep.

Great place to put your head down for a few hours without paying for frills

Good deal near the airport, nice complementary breakfast, free airport shuttle, the room has all the basics for a night stay, AC, cable TV, private bathroom, staff makes you feel like home even the shuttle driver, definitely a great choice for the price for 2 guests, great bed and breakfast. 

Good deal for the price for a stop over hotel

Decent place to stay for 1 nighter and that's it... The front desk was welcoming and accommodating given we arrived from the airport at 1 am. We did not catch that the room did not have A/C so that was a bit of shock for my wife and I. The room we had also had glass window shutters that did not shut all the way, so in the morning we heard all the animals of the jungle, trash trucks, and wilderness noises all around us. To say the least, we did not get much sleep because of this. The 'breakfast' is a few cold scrambled (or fried eggs) with toast and fruit, nothing to rave about. Overall the stay was mediocre. The customer service really kinda saved this place for us. They are very polite and helpful here.

Nice place for a quick stay near the airport

The place is good if you need a night after or before a flight from SJO airport.

Beds are comfy but everything is a bit out-dated, so are the ceiling fans which are noisy. 

The bath room serves its purpose and is appropriate for the price range, however, some details are missing, e.g. something to    stowe your toiletries in the shower. 

However, the free airport shuttle is a big advantage although it is just a 1500m walk. 

Good for a night and free airport shuttle

Melrost is owned by one of the kindest, caring families I have ever met. The father, mother and son went absolutely above and beyond. They were so accommodating. This Bed & Breakfast is in a 100% accessible and great location. Their service and hospitality was amazing. The owners are extremely humble and hard-working. I can't express my gratitude enough on how much they helped me when I made an error on the night I booked. I was truly in shock on how understanding they were on my terrible mistake. I recommend this place to anyone that needs a comfortable and exceptional stay. I am a young girl that was doing a solo trip to Costa Rica to volunteer and was having a difficult time, however meeting this family and their Bed & Breakfast was definitely one of the highlights of my trip. You need a place to stay near the airport? This is exactly where you need to be.
