This hotel was excellent, and I have no complaints! The location is just secluded enough to offer privacy and exclusivity, but is only about a 15 to 20 minute walk into the main town area. It has a small private beach for swimming, a river channel for fishing, and offers a free breakfast buffet, as well as paid lunch and dinner which was always delicious. The air conditioning in the rooms is ice cold, and Will keep you chili on even the hottest of summer days. A highlight was the bartender Francisco, who went out of his way to be friendly, helpful, and even lent me fishing supplies for an unplanned afternoon. Highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Drake Bay!

Best place to stay in Drake Bay!

We enjoyed this hotel very much: 
- The location with its privacy, beach(es), view and surroundings. 
- The friendly and competent staff. 
- The delicious meals (some reviewers complain about not having a choice/selection - well, lucky are those who know to read the hotel information and who enjoy to be surprised by a creative chef!). 
- The detoxed environment (yes, there is no TV in the room, no disco, no bragging at the bar etc.)

If you like a pleasant, calm, relaxing spot, this is yours. And from there you can make interesting tours to Cano Island, Corcovado Park (thank you Gustavo from Picolina tours!!) and more. Take your time, dive into nature and the great Pacific and enjoy PURA VIDA!

Pura vida in Pirate Cove

I stayed here for 4 nights with my husband and 9 year old son. The front desk arranged a pick up by boat for our Corcovado park jungle tour on the beach right in front of 🏴‍☠️ Cove. The staff was excellent from the beginning to the end of our stay. My son is still talking about how much he misses Pirate's Cove and especially Francisco one of the very special employees that made us feel like family. During our stay we met a few other wonderful families and became fast friends! The dive/snorkel team are excellent I highly recommend booking a tour with them. Our snorkel adventure began and ended with heavy rain but we had an incredible time nonetheless, we saw humpback whales, mother and baby, white tip reef sharks, turtles, sting rays and many fish. This area of Costa Rica is incredibly beautiful including our plane ride in which was an adventure in itself. Even the taxi ride to and from the airport was a wonderful adventure from having to change vehicles and walk across a bridge that was under repair to driving across a river in a Land Cruiser. We enjoyed our relaxing time at the pool everyday (they even let my son help rescue the crabs from the pool each morning), while iguanas🦎chilled in the tree above and macaws flew overhead 🦜. We pretty much had our own beach to explore and swim. Our cabin was #7, it had beautiful deck with 2 hammocks to relax and take in the beautiful river/ocean view. From the dive team and the wonderful crew that work hard to make the delicious meals (they even catered to my picky son), to the reception staff and of course Francisco, we say a huge thank you for making the beginning of our Costa Rica adventure so incredible! We will be back here for sure hopefully in the near future! Pura Vida 🇨🇷❤️🤙

Can’t wait to return!

We spent 4 nights at Pirate Cove and had a wonderful time. We stayed in one of the bungalows with no air conditioning, but the fans helped, and we loved the ocean breezes. Plus, it helped us acclimate to the heat. The bungalow was perfect for our family of 4. Meals were artfully served and delicious; we loved all the fruit juices too. The set meal times weren’t a problem at all - we were able to have our excursions and enjoy meals. After active mornings, We enjoyed afternoon siestas in hammocks on our deck and relaxing evenings soaking in the pool. We were able to slow down a bit here and truly relax. We did a snorkeling trip through the hotel and had a fantastic time (turtles, sharks, and so many colorful fish!).

The staff helped make our son’s birthday special and memorable. Our kids (14, 16) are already asking when we can come back.

Pirate Cove Pura Vida

I arrived at Drake Bay Airport and the taxi was already there.
I am warmly welcomed with a welcome drink. My stay was very comfortable and the staff was very friendly and took care of their guests. As a solo traveler, I feel safe and in good hands.
The chef Conzalo & Elisabeth prepared various dishes and they were very tasty.  You can also eat a vegetarian diet. The bread and cookies were homemade and delicious. 
The excursions are well organized, drinks and food were also included.
For my part, I can fully recommend Pirate Cove.

Pirate Cove, I've been there.

We stayed at Pirate Cove two nights with a boat trip to Corcovado in the middle. Our first room had a nice view and no air conditioning. We had a great lunch and dinner and an early breakfast the next morning. Upon our return from Corcovado, we requested and received a room with air conditioning and it was great! We had not had lunch in Corcovado, but GONZALO, the chef made us a fabulous meal, just because he was so kind! We enjoyed the pool and then had a delicious dinner. FRANCISCO, the bartender, was delightful! Front desk staff was also helpful as we needed some assistance obtaining medication. Great people, nice stay!

Excellent stop in Drake Bay!

This is an unusual review which I hope will be allowed.

Having booked to stay at Pirate Cove, for complex reasons, I cancelled.
I would like to thank the staff for the extremely kind and diligent way in which they resolved this - spending an inordinate amount of time dealing with their bank to sort out a refund. Whilst I cannot vouch for staying in the hotel, I would be extremely surprised, following this experience, if it is not well run by friendly and helpful staff.

An unusual review

Where can I start? First the staff is amazing! Nothing fancy here, but oh the untouched jungle feel, large rooms with AC and everything we needed. The food is plentiful and so yummy, always a surprise as you eat whatever they fix for the day 😊  ocean front wonderfulness all around- large private beach, the town/pueblo is a short 20min walk, or we found out you can rent an ATV if you want to explore or go in and out of town!  To get here you can take a boat taxi from Sierpe , drive in yourself or fly in. We took the boat taxi. The waves were a little much for us being it’s a 1 1/2 hour boat ride. Next time we will fly.

Remotely wonderful! Great staff

Pirate cove is really very nice, the bungalows are very pretty and cosy and the staff is very kind and helpfull.  You can book many different activities like riding and snorkeling. Breakfast and dinner is served at pirate cove and from the bungalows you have a direct view to the sea. beware that most of the bungalows have no  aircon and before you book corcovado national park, ask pirate cove wich entrance is closer. We have accidentally booked the wrong one, which is about 90min by boat ride one way with hundreds of people visiting same time. The better and closer entrance is only 30min by boat and offers swimming at a waterfall.
Still, I would very much recommend it. 

 Beautifull Pirate cove

Having travelled around many parts of Costa Rica before we came here, we may have been a bit spoiled by the places we'd been to before. We knew this was an "eco" hotel, but we didn't realise quite what that meant! The responses to questions via email had all been very friendly, but the place itself was very disappointing. 

The positives: The room we were in, Room 6, was probably the best one there, so fortunately we were lucky there. The room was very nice, with a lovely verandah overlooking the river. 

There was water, tea and coffee available all day.

There's a dive centre onsite.

Ok, that's it - running out of positives now!

You can only book a minimum of 3 nights, and it is full board (excluding drinks). No-one tells you what time food is, so you have to work that out for yourself. Breakfast is pretty well self serve, so that's OK, but there are no choices - you get what is there, and that's it. Same for lunch and dinner - you get what you are given, and woe betide you if you are late for dinner...

...service is of the "plonk it down and run away" variety - no-one bothers to explain any of the dishes. Some of the soups are very well presented, but with no explanation as to what they are. We came late one evening, as the dinner service is quite early, and although the tuna steaks were large, they were badly overcooked, and there is never an alternative. I shudder to think how anyone with allergies or intolerances would cope here. Our last dinner here was a baked potato with some inedible accompaniments, which was pretty awful. 

The main dining room is open plan, which is fine, but you are allocated tables at dinner time so you have no choice where to sit.  

The pool area is decrepit, with a mis-matched jumble of furniture in various states of repair. In the morning, you'll sometimes see land crabs that have fallen in; staff make no effort to save them unless you point out that some are still moving. 

There are steep stairs down to the beach, which is not the best in the world, and there are some fairly large rocks just offshore that you have to watch for if you swim.

The main reason to stay here is for the trip to Corcovado National Park. That bit worked well, and Corcovado was lovely. We also did a snorkel/dive trip here, which was also successful. 

Unfortunately, we had chosen the three night option with a view to spending a day at leisure here, as we had been travelling quite a lot and wanted some time to relax. However, the thought of spending another day here was not at all appealing, so we worked with our travel agent to cut our stay short and move on, and we were very glad we did. 

If we were to travel to Osa/Corcovado again, we'd find somewhere else; this is definitely not a place to go back to.
