Wonderfully peaceful, authentic rustic eco lodge experience. 
We arrived after a ‘car crises’ and enjoyed a really tasty dinner. Herbert hit the perfect balance of being friendly and helpful without being intrusive. 
We loved the gondola through the canopy at the nearby Rainforest Experience and sitting and listening to the jungle sounds at night. 
The gardens were lovely and the parrots and hummingbirds were lively and colourful. 

Peaceful rustic eco lodge experience 

Nice place to stay. Clean place.
Ok to stay if that’s your only purpose.
If you have to travel further during your stay, you have to make your own arrangements.
Herbert is on his own and difficult to provide a lot.
Breakfast was the same for 3 days- omelette ( no pepper), 1:3 banana, 2-3 slices of pineapple and cantelope & papaya.
He offered to cook but didn’t want to take a risk if he didn’t even have pepper!
So, ok to stay if its on your way. Reaching this was difficult.
Place is nice with garden and a small falls and stream

Cute place for layovers

This place is a bed and breakfast type stay. The owner (Herbie) is very friendly and accommodating! Maxi the Belgian Shepherd will be excited to greet you! A very pleasant place to stay. Very clean and a true jungle atmosphere. Your cabin is surrounded by jungle and beautiful. Peaceful and serene.

A true jungle stay. Very safe and peaceful. Located right off the highway. Pet friendly. Families welcome.

Our family (husband & I and 2 girls) stayed here in April for one night. It was an absolute pleasure. It was our first night in Costa Rica with the kids and we could not have asked for a better experience. The host was fantastic, kind and friendly and cooked us a great dinner and breakfast. My girls loved the sweet dog. The grounds were lovely and fun to explore.  The cabin was exactly what we expected, clean and comfortable - and waking up to the sound of the river and the birds was just lovely.  I absolutely recommend a stay here.  We were only there a night unfortunately, on our way from San Jose to Tortuguero, but we would absolutely visit again!

Great location, in the middle of wildlife. Great lodge, super clean, tastefully decorated. The owners were just the best. Amazing hospitality! Breakfast is a must, if you can, certainly go for the dinner too! 

Fantastic

My 8yr old son and I stopped here for one night to break up the drive between Manuel Antonio and the Caribbean and we were so glad we did! The property itself is a hidden gem, right on the edge of the jungle, beautiful garden, soothing sound of the stream all night long and a gorgeous swimming hole nearby.  The hosts were also incredible. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and cooked a fabulous dinner and breakfast that accommodated my rather annoying dietary restrictions, I was so grateful and really enjoyed the meal!  Will definitely come back here again and plan for two nights!

Jungle Hideaway

We only spent two nights here and we were notified in advance that the owner would like to be paid in cash and even preferred US dollars, so we had tucked away the money we needed well in advance, including enough to pay $15 each for two dinners. Breakfast was no charge. We happened to arrive when the rain did. Almost the entire first day it was pouring. Nice to experience, but we didn't want to go anywhere. Also, we didn't have a car and going anywhere would have involved a taxi. We ended up just staying there all day and reading and relaxing. Having breakfast and dinner with a small snack of nuts we had with us ended up being enough food. We were glad that we had chosen to have dinner in advance. It would have been a real bother to have to go elsewhere. And the food was good and seemed healthy.

The gardens are very beautiful. We got to see a sloth in a tree, a tiny poison frog on a leaf, some lighting bugs, and a few birds. There was a nice porch to sit on, but the bugs had us deciding to go inside. It would have been nice to have chairs in the room. The bed was very high off the floor but also very comfy. The room was well screened but seemed a bit dark. A light in the closet area would be very helpful. 

We found ourselves wishing we had planned to stay at least one more night. Then we might have sprung for a taxi to take us to the tram ride that was about 20 minutes away. It's right above the river and the roar of the river actually ended up bothering me at night, but some would find it soothing.

First of all, I have to say that the room was very nice, and clean, although one of the screens had holes near the bottom. It was the way we were treated which I felt was disrespectful, unfair, and certainly enough to put us off ever going there again. When we arrived, both of us were feeling very unwell, having picked up some respiratory bug from the plane. After being shown to our room, we were told that the electricity was  not working, but "should" be working again by nightfall. This meant no overhead fan, which is necessary in the rainforest, at least for us seniors. We lay on the bed for perhaps half an hour, to see if it would be OK, but it was stifling with no air movement, and there was no guarantee the electricity would be back by night; also it was difficult for us to breathe. Reluctantly we decided we couldn't stay the night, and went to explain to the man  why we had to leave. He told us fine, but said we had to pay the full $80.00-and in cash, since of course the credit machine was not working. He must have noticed our expressions, because he said it was 3:00, and too late "to book someone else in".As far as we could tell, there wasn't another  person on the place; the other cabins were all available. Still, he had a point , and we would have been fine with paying half, but he insisted on the full amount. Now, we have been to Costa Rica several times, and the people are wonderful; a few times, we had to cancel out at the last minute, and the proprietors refused to accept our offers to pay anyway...that is what seems like good business sense to me. At this point, we were too sick to argue about it; we just wanted to get away from this rude person. I'm not recommending that people not go there, it seems like a nice place, but I feel that we were ripped off (no electricity) by being charged for a night when we barely touched a thing in that room, and were treated rudely .I have to add that when you go, be sure to have plenty of cash, because from reading other reviews, that credit machine seems to be out of service most of the time.

Highway robbery...

Although we only had one night, My wife and l enjoyed very much Casa Rio Blanco. The Cabinas have  a rustic charm and we felt very cozy!
The Owner, Herbie was a wonderful host and extremely accommodating. Do yourself a favor and opt for his home style dinner... you won’t be disappointed with the meal or the conversation!
Highly recommend that you go for a quick walk around and jump in the swimming hole not far from the property!
Would absolutely stay again!!!

Perfect Stop Over Between Puerto Viejo and Tortuguero!

Off the beaten path and relaxing. We used La Marina as our "Pit Stop" while transiting between the South Pacific side and the South Caribbean side. We added a day to visit Tortuguero, with Herbie's help. The cabin had a very comfortable bed, was clean, and had a reverent feel to it. It was refreshingly cool (cold?) with out AC. The shower is the weak link, but tolerable. If your'e looking for an alternative to the sterile, desensitized, and bland hotels, this is it. By the way, the Tortuguero trip was a 5:15am dep, 1 1/2 hour drive, 6:45 boat at La Pavona ($6.00 ea). It was very low water conditions in April, and that may have changed some things.
