Do not book this hotel/hostel thru a third party (i.e., expedia, airbandb, etc.), especially if it’s charged in afvance. I stayed here with my daughter for a booking for 9 DAYS with Expedia and only stayed for two days. Asked nicely for some refund and nope, not even for a day.

In addition we were put in the wrong “suite” room. I did contact Expedia before and after we checked out to no avail. 

Main issue, thus the title of this review, is that Expedia charged me $79.95 per night for  a $65 dollar room (the 4 bed suite, 3 queen, 1 twin) so I overpaid by a lot. And according to Expedia I was given a member discount of $179.91. This is obviously a fake savings since that would make the room actually cost $99.94 per night! Currently on beginning stages of taking Expedia to small claims court for this.

I will admit that I should not have booked a non-refundable room, but I expected some sort of consideration, especially from one of the lowest-rated hotels/hostels in the area.

Pros: a/c, minifridge in room, communal kitchen, private bathroom and balcony in suite, and at the center of Montezuma. Staff was nice

Cons: no hot water, ants in the room and outside in balcony, construction material in the walkways, hard beds with tiny blankets, no TV, poor wi-fi

All in all, we were not happy and left early. Montezuma is a cute little town, just stay somewhere else unless you’re really roughing it or for a night.

This hostel is amazing!! The room was big and clean, fresh towels, hot water in the shower and a fridge in the room. Love it. My friend and me wanted to stay one night and ended up staying 4 nights. The hostel is close to the beach and the small town. Really relaxed vibes. The hostel has also hammocks and Elias is super helpful, friendly and he made our stay perfect. 


Best hostel in Montezuma

At the reception they don’t speak English.
Despite my booking the didn’t kept my room but they kept the deposit.
At the end, I over paid (as I was told Hostelworld should refound me as they didn’t kept any deposit and this was why the didn’t have the room 🤥).
The room are nice but the kitchen and the common spaces are dirty and the atmosphere is poor.
I think there are better accommodation and more friendly people elsewhere...it was the worst hotel out of 9 different hotels in Costa Rica

Never again 

The people who work here are all smiles, and will help you feel warm and welcome.   Pretty quiet considering how close it is to town, and easily accessible if you wanna grab a coffee or a quick snack from the store.   I slept great here!

Worth the money compared to other montezuma hostels

Quiet and great hostel

This place is not nearly as bad as some of the reviews say it is. The room is not dirty as some said. It's normal and clean. And if you have a room that's back and not just on the street it's completely silent. Also it is a 1 minute walk maybe half a minute walk to the very center of this little town. That is very convenient yet at the same time it is completely quiet. Also the air conditioner is silent. To summarize it's a very basic very small room but it wasn't really bad just basic simple small room but very well located and quiet.

The room was dirty, you could see the dust and mould on the walls and in the corners of the room where it hadn’t had a proper clean for a very long time. The shower was cold. They also had a large number of unnecessarily pedantic rules around the grounds eg you were not allowed to lounge on the outside seating with your feet up, not allowed to lie on the sofas.

I stayed here for one week last month and can highly recommend it. No, it's not a 5-star hotel with fluffy towels and free toiletries but the rooms are cleaned daily, beds are very comfortable and the showers work well (especially for Costa Rica) and the communal kitchen is well equipped so that one can prepare one's own meals...in fact several people can cook at the same time and enjoy the sociability of meeting people from all over the world. Each room has its own fridge so that you can store food and drinks. My favorite room is #1, facing the park, with its own hammock and dining table for 4.
The staff are wonderful, as is the owner, who is dedicated to provide the best service and value in the area...which she does. Rates vary depending on the season, but you are looking at around $30-40/night (add $10 for air-conditioning which I didn't need and this is the height of the summer) depending if it's one or two people. 
If you are on a budget, this is the place to stay. I'd rather spend my money at the local restaurants than on a bed and a shower. I did my research and there is nothing comparable for value in the area. The next step up is $60-70/night.
One final clarification: the sales tax rate in Costa Rica is 13% so if you use a credit card, you'll pay the 13%, same in restaurants, same in stores, but cash is king here and you can avoid the 13% in many establishments by paying cash (there is an ATM a mere 100m from the Aurora).

Excellent Value in the Heart of Montezuma

I recently went there with my sister and her son from Nicaragua. We booked two doble rooms. As I read the reviews I was amazed about the typical style and excellent service we got here in Hotel Aurora.
The bathroom was made of stones and shells from the sea. Every day they cleaned our rooms and changed the towels. The balcony area had hammocks and tables to sit and share. the shared kitchen was perfectly equipped to prepare any kind of meals during our stay. And the budget was reasonable and quiet well for the service we got.

We highly recommend the Hotel Aurora in Montezuma

The security guard turns off the lights sometime between 9-10pm leaving guests to manage a narrow walkway to their rooms in the dark & edged by a low fence topped with barbed wire. They then have to go up 3 steps by the side gate which has barbed wire wrapped around it's post! If you then wanted to make a drink or snack before bed - unluckly... the kitchens locked until 7am.  Want to wash out your bathing costume, dry your beach towel? Unlucky - not allowed to dry your clothes other than on a small dryer in the middle of the building which doesn't get light or air so stays wet! Want a clean room? Forget it the floor is dirty. The towels are old & rough.oh yes & if you want to pay by ctedit card... add 13%!

So many rules to spoil what should have been a wonderful visit to gorgeous Montezuma
