We stayed three nights in the superior cabin number 14. This cabin had great views of the valley and distant mountains. We were quite happy with our accommodations, but your expectation should match with what this lodge offers. All the cabins are fairly rustic, but we felt ours was comfortable, though it got cold at night, there were two heaters and plenty of blankets. If you are concerned about walking steep slopes, be sure to talk over your needs with the staff we found the staff to be uniformly helpful and very nice.

The restaurant had wonderful, looking out and a good selection of food options which were well prepared. We were very happy with the restaurant, which also had a wood fireplace if you wanted to sit in front of it and relax.

One comment about Quetzals. We did not see any Quetzelz at the lodge and we have the understanding that they only rarely appear here we went on the 5:30 AM Quetzal  walk which was located on a private farm about 15 minutes away. We felt lucky because we saw a beautiful male Quetzal.

Beautiful location and views.

While the trails and views of this lodge are lovely, I would barely recommend this place to others. The rooms are quite rustic and basic and given the high price point, we were very surprised. Also there are many hidden dining fees that showed up on our bill. The breakfasts and dinners are basic and very expensive. Each cup of coffee was billed to us, despite the high price point of breakfast. Also the dinner is fixed price for 2 or 3 courses. We had 2 but were charged for 3. We then had to argue at checkout that we were overcharged. The receptionist explained to us that you are charged regardless if you ate 3 courses or not.  Also the pricey quetzal tour was presented as going to a “garden”. We ended up at the tour guide’s backyard. It was also expensive and you need to drive 15 minutes off the property. I would highly suggest staying at another local lodge as we had a much better experience at the other location. 

Disappointed and Hidden Fees

Had lunch here in July while visiting the Savegre Valley with a birding group.  Nice restaurant (can’t speak to the lodging experience, we were there only for a meal and some afternoon birding).  The food was delicious (I had chicken with blackberry sauce) and afterwards we sat on the deck and did some feeder-watching then walked the grounds a little for birds.  A great deck for birding, lots of hummingbirds (not that rare I guess in Costa Rica) and a lovely way to spend a little time after lunch.  A great place for the Black and Yellow Silky Flycatcher (if that means anything to you).  Was told by one of the local tour leaders that this was one of the best places to buy coffee n the area (and many in our group took his advice).  Would recommend this to any birders (and others too) looking for a good meal and some frenetic hummingbird feeder activity.

Good food and great birding

If we ever come back to CR, we will 100% be coming back to Paraiso Quetzal. The views are everything. Honestly, we didn’t even turn the TV on because we would just look out the window. 
Their trails are fantastic as well- I love the 1000-year-old tree. 

We had a minor issue with the shower (0 pressure and freezing water), but the staff fixed it very quickly. They are on top of their game. I also appreciated that they provided heaters. 

Something I would love to see them implement, given their efforts in sustainability, would be the Acopian BirdSaver curtains. There is such a diversity of birds there, but since the windows are so clean and clear, birds collide with the window and can concuss themselves. We saw some evidence of a bird collision on our side windows (feathers smooshed on the glass :’( ) 

Overall, we loved our stay, and highly recommend

WONDERFUL

This was the first place we landed in Costa Rica and the staff were so kind, especially in being patient and helping us with our Spanish! The dinner was the best we had in Costa Rica, and our room was incredibly clean and with an amazing view. 

Beautiful place, excellent food, and helpful, welcoming staff!

Paraiso Quetzal Ladge boasts some pretty amazing experiences. The hummingbird garden is a photographer's dream. At any given time there are multitudes of several species within arms' reach. But what really stood out was the opportunity to observe resplendent quetzals in wild avocado trees in nearby farmer's fields. Take the tour, it supports the conservation of these rare birds and you won't believe your eyes. 
Our cabin was adequate but not insulated at all for the cold overnight temperatures so we had to request a second space heater to make it bearable. The lodge is at 3000m elevation so expect chilly nights. The property is beautifully landscaped and there are several excellent hiking trails closely.
The food at the lodge was outstanding. We enjoyed exceptional  meals made with local ingredients and served by the nicest young staff. Overall, our stay at Paraiso was unforgettable!



Magic at 8000 feet

BRING WARM CLOTHES!!!
We stayed here as part of a group. Cold showers. Very basic food. 
Walks are over rated,  once you've done one you've done them all.
Managed to drive nearby to see quetzals but would not recommend staying here.
Expensive food for what it is

Distinctly average 

Great views of the valley from the little accommodation huts. There are well marked walks through the grounds.

The restaurant food was reasonable, included breakfast was good.

However be warned it was very cold at night. They provide multiple blankets for the bed but the room was very cold.

Good views

I don't know if I just got lucky or what, but from the moment I arrived it was like I had entered into a different world built with magic and intrigue. I spent much time touring the trails with waterfalls, viewing the feeders and hummingbird visitors, touring with guides looking for quetzals, and enjoying the gourmet dining experience. Plus, the wood burning fireplace in the main lodge adds an extra special romantic ambience. I traveled alone, but would return with a partner if presented the opportunity.

Captivating and Unique

My partner and I stayed here for one night, but wish it could have been a week! Jorge, the owner of Paraiso Quetzal, actually picked us up and drove us from our other accommodations deeper in the valley of San Gerardo to Paraiso Quetzal. Jorge took great pride in explaining that the lodge is family run and built! The room we had was gorgeous--probably the coolest/nicest accommodation I've ever had. Though the trek to the dining area was a bit of a slog, it was all worth it for the incredible food. The trails around the property are all extremely well-maintained, and we had a wonderful time exploring the massive property. Be sure to head to the top of the overlook for sunset!
