What a great way to stay comfortable yet feel the whole experience with nature than with Santa Juana Lodge and Nature Reserve.

My family and I made this our first stop of five stays, and we loved every moment! The hospitality and friendliness of the host(s) were outstanding. The Cabins were spacious and clean, with the rustic feel of a wood cabin. The views were grand, and you could see and hear the immersive rain forest thriving with life all day and night and the grand view near the mountains' top.   

Our Host was mainly Allen. And he was warm and welcoming! He educated us on various topics about the region and Costa Rica's tropical rainforest. We took the tour and saw and learned even more. In the end, we swam in the pool by a nearby waterfall.   My daughters enjoyed it, and it will be an unforgettable experience.

In one with Nature!

Fantastic location and breathtaking views. The private balcony is perfect to spot wild animals....We saw our first toucan here, wow! Peaceful and delicious home cooked food. The bed was comfortable and it was nice to hear the bugs at night!

Amazing stay

Accommodations were excellent. Guide was enthusiastic and willing to help in any way. Only 9 cabins are in this resort so the staff can be very attentive. Situated on top of a mountain in the middle of a nature preserve.

Mountaintop Paradise

Santa Juana lodge is just a piece of heaven in the mountains of Quepos/Manuel Antonio. Allan and his family make you feel welcome as soon as you arrive and you will get to understand how they live in the Santa Juana Pueblo. This is the true Costa Rican experience plus you get to see some cool animals of you're lucky. We saw 2 types of tucans, squirrel monkeys and so many colorful birds. The road to get there is a mountain road with rocks and dirt so you'd be better with a 4x4. We loved this place and we recommend it to anyone without any doubts.

Great place, great food, great staff !

This was a dream location.  The cottage in which my college friend and I stayed was very open and airy and had a lovely balcony where we rocked in rocking chairs and from which you could view the jungle and flocks of toucans and parakeets and parrots!  The sunsets were also so lovely.  I was able to relax entirely.  And the staff is so wonderfully friendly and hospitable and gracious, and good cooks!  We hiked 3 miles through the rainforest to a waterfall nearby and swam there.  I could have stayed here forever!

Costa Rican Adventure par excellence

WOW!  What an incredible place.  If you are looking for a place out of the way and in the elements, Santa Juana is your place!  When they say it takes an hour to get there from Quepos, they are correct.  You will want a 4x4, especially if it is the rainy season.  The drive is bumpy, but beautiful.  We saw blue morpho butterflies a couple different times along the drive!  SO amazing.  The lodge and casitas are very well maintained, the grounds are beautiful.  The meals are typical Costa Rican fare -Casados, etc, but they mix it up a bit - everything was delicious, the soups were amazing too!  Food is prepared lovingly by Julia and another (can’t remember her name).  Julia’s son, Alan is one of the hosts- he does the bird tours (we regret not doing one).  Alan is very helpful, friendly and you can tell he really loves his job.  There are private waterfalls on their property- don’t miss out!  You can either hike to them (it is a very steep hike back), but driving doesn’t take long.  We had them all to ourselves both times we went.  You can jump into them and swim.  They are a must see.  We were in the Amor Casita… the views are breathtaking- the deck off the back has a view of the ocean and the mountains.  One of the nights we had thunderstorms, with lighting all night long that lit up the sky constantly.  We had quite the show!  The room was very clean, had all the amenities needed, including umbrellas, kitchen necessities and toiletries.  
There is no AC, but it is not needed- there are fans and plenty of windows with screens to keep things comfortable.  We stayed for 3 nights, but could have easily stayed there longer.  Don’t let the drive deter you, it is so worth the effort to get there.  If you plan ahead you could stay there and not go anywhere else!  

Just go!

it was simply the best place to stay during our 6 week trip to Costa Rica.  Hugo (the owner) told us from the very beginning that their aim is to make us feel at home with family - and oh we did!  

Our bungalow was just gorgeous, bright, modern, clean and this absolutely great view!  When visibility was good we saw the sea, when it rained we felt like we were in the clouds.  We could practically pick litchis from the balcony and watch toucans and other birds again and again.  

Roxana and Julia's food was wonderful, we felt like being "at grandma's" - it was cooked with a lot of love, it always tasted excellent and we were more than full.  In addition, the view from the restaurant over the surrounding mountains is simply magical.  

Alan & Andres made our stay such a wonderful experience, they were so accommodating, incredibly friendly and you could tell they just want us to have a great time with them.  Our 2 year old son still talks about them and we fondly remember our times together!  

A wonderful destination are the waterfalls, about a 10-minute drive from the lodge.  We had the place all to ourselves, walked to the big waterfall and then bathed at the small waterfall in the middle of the jungle - what a dream! I also recommend taking the massage that you can book through the lodge, the masseuse comes directly to the room, the massage is wonderful and rounds off the whole experience.

 We will recommend this accommodation to any of our friends who go to Costa Rica, it would be a shame to miss it!  

Note for drivers: We were unsure when booking because of the many reports about the difficult journey - which turned out to be much more harmless.  We were on the road in the rainy season but if you choose the route described by the property you don't have to cross a river.  It's a long gravel road, so you have to drive slowly, but that's all.  our son just slept during the drive, so you don't get too shaken up.

Best stay in Costa Rica

Santa Juana Lodge is magnificent. Andres and Alan and their families were warm and kind and made us feel at home.  

The accommodations were clean and spacious and quite comfortable. 

The views are absolutely incredible and tranquil.  Well worth a 40 min drive away from Quepos to relax and unwind. For those who still need to be connected to the real world the internet is surprisingly excellent.

The food was delicious, and our kids (who can be quite picky)  could not get enough of the homemade chicken rice and papa fritas. 

It sounds cliche, but this truly is a very special place.

You won't regret visiting. 

Incredible 

Fantastic! Amazing! Just what we needed! We are in the middle of a two week family trip. We have been hitting up fantastic places through Yucatan and now Costa Rica. I found this place online and just couldn't ignore it. It had everything I was looking for in a trip to Costa Rica. We're on a tight budget and it hit the mark there as well in the off-season. First of all, we were nervous about the drive with the multiple comments, but really? It wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Probably would have been fine in a regular car as long as it was dry. My husband was honestly disappointed to not need his 4-wheel-drive. 

These people treat you like family. You are their honored guests. Their manner is so peaceful and welcoming. We were surprised to have Wi-Fi and a TV being so far removed, but it was there and honestly quite welcomed for my kids and the early evenings in July where the sun sets before 6 pm. 

Each meal is multiple courses and felt so fancy for us. I love the Costa Rican food and the cooks are sweet and fantastic. 

The village of 45 people surrounds you so you are never too far from people or knowing exactly where you are. 

We took the hike down to the waterfalls and it was gorgeous. We were all alone down there. There are well-managed gardens and wildlife all around! I honestly don't know if we'll go to Manuel Antonio, like this is the Costa Rican jungle in all it's beauty. 

THE VIEWS! The views from our room, Chingolotea, and from all the cabins I could see have the most stunning views! The thunderstorms were something else. We were comfortable sleeping with our open room and fan with the lovely breeze that goes through the high hills there.

Can't say it enough, go there! I wouldn't plan on traipsing down to MA each day, that wouldn't have been fun. Go up there to enjoy what it has to offer, old fashioned Costa Rican hospitality, amazing views, biodiversity, conservation and a breath of fresh air.
