· My room had no TV running because according to reception they stole the electricity cable, they did not have soap in the shower, I bought one in the market .. the light went to the dawn and I never return ..
the reception guy on Sunday night did not make the slightest effort to solve the situation ... I have to add that the only pleasant experience was the treatment and compression of Juan at the front desk ..
this place is advertised as a hotel in booking.com  but is really a century old house subdivided in many many rooms...if i would know i would stay at the park next to it..

Tbh I cant believe I am actually taking the time to write a bad review, Im normally not really the person to do this, but my stay at la cuesta was really the worst I ever had!!! They dont change the sheets, just make the beds with the same sheets used by another person... disgusting. Plus, weird staff, who have no idea how to respond to things or help you.. Place is dirty and stinks enormously. Good location tho but that is pretty much it. Worst hostel ever..

WORST!!!

Huge bump! The living room look like a “under construction” site. The whole place is greatly dirty and dusty, and the bathroom... 
Now the real problem, there is a discotheque right on the next house. We heard it a LOT in the room and we are at the opposite side in the hostel. Some rooms are just at few meters away from the party!! 

Messy, dirty and with a bar just at side

Several bathrooms but only 1 (sometimes) fully functional. In some bathrooms, only the shower works, not the basin and not the toilet. When there is no water (which happens regularly), people keep using the toilet without being able to flush... Our bedroom used to have an en-suite that was closed but we had a bad smell in the room. No real breakfast (just a bit of coffee), you can use the very basic kitchen. On Sundays you have to wait for the guy to come back from church to get some bread and butter.

Great location, basic amenities

Friendly staff on reception, a very central location and cheap price are the only positives for La Cuesta. 

The kitchen was really dirty with overflowing bins and rubbish on the floor. Dirty dishes everywhere. Breakfast was a loaf of white bread with cheap jam and butter, and coco pops. No coffee, tea or anything else. They'd be better to offer nothing. 

Only two showers for all shared accomodation and these had the shared toilets as well. Toilet paper bin was overflowing and floors filthy. Also had to wait about 45 minutes for a bathroom to be free on one occasion. 

Beds have old worn out mismatching sheets and covers that look like they were bought at a charity shop. 

It could be a fabulous place to stay if managed properly and given a complete makeover. But right now, it's really worth avoiding. 

Worst place we've stayed in Costa Rica

I really want to thank la cuesta for my stay there, the personal there is impeccable they make you feel welcomed and at home. 
La cuesta is a big house, familial ambiance, good vibes, nice people, perfect place to stay in San Jose. 
The location is good, the price is impossible to beat, it is not a 5 star hotel but there is everything you need, a good bed, a kitchen you can use, nice confortable couches and places to hang out, a TV.
Also I want to point out they would cook us breakfast every morning, it can be cereals but when I was there it was juice or bananas with eggs and gallo pinto every morning.
