Visited today during a 3 island day tour on the Karaka. Lopud was our last stop on a beautiful island day trip. Unfortunately, the villa Birimisa hotel/cafe was the one bad experience. The prices were exorbitant. We were charged 70Kn for a small glass of wine. This was double the price on previous island and at our 5 star hotel in Dubrovnik.  You expect these types of behaviours in Rome but not in lovely Croatia. My advice is avoid any hotel/Cafe that does not have a menu card with explicit prices.

Called in for coffee and wine

A wonderful location for a restful holiday. These apartments are well run and with a great staff you will be well looked after at the Villa Birimisa. It is set just a few yards from the beautifully clear Adriatic sea. It also boasts a an on site restaurant, the  Mandrac, which serves a great choice of meat and fish dishes deliciously prepared.

We had five days in one of the two attic rooms. A few thoughts:

Location: great. Down the far end of the bay, 10 - 15 minutes walk from the ferry, close to the big Tupperware hotel. View from our window, superb. Could just stand for ages and drink it in!

House: A lovely historic house in a great state of repair and decoration.

Room: clean and had everything we could have wanted. Kitchen utensils reasonable. Bathroom good. Bed comfortable. Sofa and other seating all good. WiFi and A/C all good. Being an attic room, you do have to mind your head. And sadly you have to stand to see that view - there is no balcony and you won't see anything but blue sky from a chair. The other drawback is ... stairs. Do not book an attic unless you are happy to face them!

Service: This is NOT a hotel. It is an economical self-catering apartment. All the same, in a five day visit, a cleaner or towel-swap at some point would have been good. The porter to meet us at the boat was an excellent touch. Apart from that, I found the owners slightly aloof and staff rather uninvolved.

Local food: Mandrac restaurant downstairs is under the same ownership, and residents get a 10% discount. I will review it separately - suffice to say that it is fine, and there are loads of other choices along the bay. 

Value: I was scared that Lopud was going to cane our budget for the holiday. Actually, on a per night basis, this was a seriously economical stay. Height of season, too. 

A base for Dubrovnik? Given that ferries are frequent, dependable and cheap, I would say that staying on an island like this is great value, even if you are planning to "do Dubrovnik" during your stay. Certainly, getting out of the crazy tourist crowds of the city and getting "home to Lopud" is utter bliss.

Recommend Villa Birimisa? Yes, I would. I would fork out for a better room next time, though.

Great place to stay on Lopud

Apartment was fine. No hot water though and no fresh towels or cleaning service which was disappointing. Service not great. Had to wait to speak to anyone. We had dinner at the restaurant one of the nights and were very disappointed with the food. Would recommend eating at alternative places.

Villa Birimisa is a wonderful place to stay. It has one of the best locations on the island of Lopud. The host and his staff are warm, friendly and efficient. There is a restaurant on the ground floor called Mandrac, which serves delicious food and has a great choice of fish and meat dishes.
