BED BUGS & RUDE SERVICE

Booked for three nights originally, and when I arrived the elderly woman (Meri) tried to scam me by saying that the prices have gone up and instead of the 14€ per night, it is now 60€. I had to pull out my booking confirmation and show her the prices before she backed down from her demand. 

I felt some itching on the first night of my sleep, but thought it might just be mosquitoes. I woke up to some bites and just brushed it off as mosquitos because Split is after all a beach city. It was during the second night where I really felt a lot of bites, and awoke to what you saw in the photos. 

What was worse was that when I told Meri nicely, she vehemently denied that they had bed bugs, and instead accused me of sleeping elsewhere and getting bitten elsewhere. She claimed that because nobody else has bites it was definitely me. 

She looked through the bedding and claimed that "she did not find any bed bugs" but when I looked at it I immediately saw a few. She then picked them up and squished them, throwing it away. When I then confronted her about the obvious bugs, she brought in the cleaning lady as a "third party" and said they change their bedsheets, and they both "did not find bed bugs". When i brought up the fact that meri and I both just found bugs, Meri had the audacity to say the bugs were "just something dirty". 

REALLY BAD SERVICE. READ OTHER REVIEWS AND YOU WILL SEE.

BED BUGS AND RUDE SERVICE

This place is well situated in the old city. But hard to find it amidst the narrow roads. When asked for help they denied and asked to rely on google maps which hardly works in narrow roads. The hostel has 9 beds in a small room. The power points aren't easily accessable for all beds. It's air conditioned, which is a boon in summers. Overall it's cheap place to stay for a few days.

Good place for a short stay.

The location is perfect, right in the center of town but type in the address on Google maps not the location name, booking has it wrong on google maps. The cost was much cheaper than the other hostels I found as well.

The rooms are big and spacious for everyone and there stuff, they provide a lock box for your valuables and there are 2 full bathrooms. Everything was very clean all the time. The quality of people was really nice. This place doesn't server breakfast keeping the overall cost down of your stay and there is a market right around the corner and a fridge, bowls, plates and everything you need to make your own food. Beds and pillows are comfortable. There is air con but it depends on the group if you want to use it, we used it 2 out of 3 nights I stayed. 

Cleaning does start at 10am and the lights do go on, but we were never kicked out of the room and everyone was awake. If you plan on partying late and sleeping into 2 pm, maybe this isn't the place for you. 

They do make it clear that check in as 2 and if you come before that they store your luggage in the office or in the room. I did have a difficult time communicating at first with Meri but we worked it out - - one thing to keep in mind is the cultural differences, not everyone communicates like you do.

No Frills Backpacker Hostel

Meri herself had no manners at all however her sister was slightly more approachable. It was in fact her sister who told us we could check out late at 11.30 due to our train journey being at 22.30, This was soon changed when we were woken at 10am with screaming about how we needed to "get out" and meri was threatening to call her brother to evict us. 
This isn't the first time she tried to throw us out, it also happened on the second night when one of my friends was ill and unfortunately threw up on his way home just before we got into the apartment. 
The apartment itself was not too bad, it was clean (due to 10 am cleaning and eviction everyday) the toilet flushed and the shower ran (not always at the desired temperature though.) 
Also as well as the awful hospitality you were not permitted to use the "cooking facilities" (one pan and two hobs) after breakfast time so we ended up eating cereal for 2 meals a day. 
Overall I wouldn't recommend for couples or friends as we were a mixed group and nobody was impressed. 


Meri is not so merry 

We arrived late at night. Although initially thinking the apartment was a good find, this illusion was quickly shattered the next morning when the owners barged in with the cleaner (which we made it quite clear we didn't want), turned the lights on, and told us we had to leave while it was cleaned. This happened not once, but every morning we stayed at Meri. Outside of this, the owners generally treated us like convicts, randomly barging in to interrogate us about our doings and once even threatening to evict us on some flimsy pretext. The shower facilities were generally very poor- the curtain was mostly ineffective, allowing water to pool on the floor and the shower head had to be held by hand. Outside of this, the beds were comfortable and the central location is convenient for the city of Split, although less so for the beach. Overall I would highly recommend anyone looking for a good time to avoid staying at the Meri prison cells.
