What an amazing experience. Petar is a nice guy who is always looking for make you feel comfortable. The hostel is extremely tidy and i mean it, Petar cleans kitchen 10 times per day if is used by guest 10 times, not kidding. I found it great because if Im away from home is really cool to stay on a clean place. Hostel is 5 minutes walking to old town so you don't need transport to visit the most important places of Split. Also it has a Lidl 10 minutes walking.

Amazing experience

I though long and hard about leaving a review or not. Then I read the review of Charlotte a bit below that resonated with me. I don’t know if sometimes the host is nice because he does have some nice reviews but I can say for sure that he was despicable with us. As she said he is agressive, he has a temper. It feels like if you dare say something that he won’t like, he turns red. He also cancelled our reservation so that we couldn’t leave a review on hostelworld, a shame! Please find another accommodation in split as there are SO MANY amazing rooms to rent for such a low price right next to the old town and which are AMAZING like four stars hotel room really! Have a nice stay somewhere else

Terrible

Excellent hostel, we had such a good experience we came back a few days later! Probably the best value for money you will find in all of Split, excellent location on the slopes of Marjan and the nicest host (Petar) you could hope for. I encourage you to visit, you will not regret it!

Fantastic hostel!

A fantastic stay! Hostel was clean, tidy and well presented! Easy communication with Petar who picked me up from the Airport, was there as i arrived! Gave me a full tour of the whole accomadation and left me with everything i needed!
Rooms were clean, tidy with very comfy beds! Petar was very helpful even driving me to the bus station the following day!
I would stay again and recommend to anyone!

A fantastic trip!

The hostel facilities are fine. HOWEVER, this review relates to my experience with the hostel owner, who was the worst person I’ve met in 10 months of travelling. It’s a bit of a long story, so get comfy.

I made a booking for one person for one night. However, I showed up with my fiance, who was catching an overnight bus that night and was just there to wait for me to check in. First of all, the hostel owner Petar was not home at 1630 when we arrived (I was met by his mother who didn't speak English). She got Petar on the phone who asked me to wait at the hostel for half an hour before he got back to check me in. I waited half an hour, Peter showed up and asked me to wait a further 15 minutes while he talked to some people before he checked me in. I thought this was a bit rude and didn't see why I couldn't just leave my bag and do check in later, but I was nice about it (I had turned up an hour earlier than I said I would to be fair). I introduced my fiance and explained that he wasn't staying, just hanging around waiting for me to check in, Petar said ok but didn't seem very happy to have him there at all and we were made to feel uncomfortable. 

We left immediately after check in and had to grab my fiance's suitcase from a place across town we'd stored while we'd been sailing, and we needed to transfer some stuff from my bag (at the hostel) to his bag (outside the hostel), since we would be going to different places during the coming week, and he was catching his overnight bus in a few hours. We deliberated about where to re-arrange the suitcases, in a normal hostel I'd just have a quick word with the owner and ask if we could do it in my dorm or the common area. However, Petar had struck me as pedantic and intimidating, I was pretty confident that if I asked or if he even set eyes on my fiance again he'd be mad, so we decided it would be best to do it downstairs at the bottom of his building where it wouldn't be on his premises or in his way. I popped upstairs to quickly transfer some photos to my hard drive while my fiance was downstairs re-organising the suitcases. In a couple of minutes, Peter stormed into the room, clearly furious, and told me to come with him. I duly followed him. He beckoned me out of the hostel into the stairwell, I told him firmly that I would prefer to speak to him in the hostel, not a dark stairwell with the door closed, but he angrily insisted, so I complied. He then completely lost the plot, raising his voice and angrily ranting at me about my partner repacking the bags down there (apparently a neighbour had called him and was unhappy), flinging around accusations of us 'sneaking around', trying to avoid paying for two people because we had no money, etc etc. Every time I opened my mouth to explain the situation, he shouted over me. I was very intimidated and frightened, he was a scary dude.  After a few minutes of being verbally abused, I was like, 'Ok that's it, we're leaving, I'm going to get my valuables from the room and we're out of here'. He followed me into the room, still harrassing me at full tilt in front of a stunned group of other guests. I asked him to please leave me alone and while I got my stuff and after a few minutes he did. I was almost in tears at this stage and the other girls in my room were like 'WTF just happened?' I gave them a very brief run down, and the next minute Petar burst through the door again and was like 'You're not allowed to speak to my guests, get out, get out etc' and stood over me ranting and raving (including threatening to call the police? I was like, well you can, but I'm fairly sure that repacking your suitcase isn't a crime?') until I had all my stuff in my day pack, then he marched me out of the room. He then cancelled my booking (smart - I couldn't leave a review) and gave me a refund, all the time telling me what a terrible person I was and what an amazing guy he is. I left and met my fiance downstairs, we zipped up our suitcases and headed for the door, when would you believe it, Petar appeared AGAIN (literally one minute after I'd left the hostel) and started harassing us again. We were like, dude, we're leaving, just leave us alone. I headed onto the street while he berated my fiance a bit, and then at one point, inexplicably, he broke away from my fiance and started coming for me at a fast walk (this is a big guy, in the dark at 10pm on a back street in Split - pretty intimidating) - I yelled out in fright and ran away down the street with my bag and he left me alone. He then (get this), tried to shake my fiance's hand as he walked out the gate... my fiance was like 'I'm not shaking your hand'. Lol. 

Sooo if you do patronize this nasty dude’s business, tread super carefully! He’s probably fine if you don’t do anything to provoke him, but it doesn’t take much at all, and if you do, he goes crazy.

AVOID! Aggressive and intimidating owner

Spacious rooms with 2 kitchens and 2 bathrooms for about 20 people, more than other hostels we’ve stayed in. Very clean and in good location (only 15 minutes from centre). Had a common room/dining room which was good to chat to people. Only issue was the front door remains unlocked, but this never caused any issues. 

Lovely hostel with friendly stmosphere

We booked two nights at Hilltop, but due to a series of unfortunate events got stuck for a night near Plitvice and missed our check out time. Peter was so kind and moved our things out of our room for the new guests so they could be kept safe and when we arrived he let us shower and cook before we headed away. 
The rooms and bathroom were kept very clean and the kitchen, if a little small, was very well equipt. The location is just out of the way of busy crowds but an easy 10-15 minute walk right into the centre. 
A quiet place but one where everyone says hello and Peter looks after everyone as best he can (he even helped us translate some food we had bought!)

Unbelievably kind owner and lovely quiet place

Stayed here 2 nights and was very pleased with the rooms. It could definitely do with an extra bathroom and a bit more living space but aside from that we had a nice stay there. Be aware that it is a good 10 minute walk from the sea front in split.

Agreeable staff and nice and clean

I only spent one night at Hilltop, but it was a great hostel. Not too far out of town, with good, air conditioned rooms, and a lovely host! Beds were comfortable and the wifi worked. Laundry is available, and Peter is happy to give lots of tips about Split! Thanks again, Peter!
